sammykinz Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 i sooo want to donate! if i weren't broke, i could give them way more :/ do you think Green Day will donate them? ^ I sure as hell hope so. Maybe the guys from AFI will, too. And probably Tim Armstrong. I'm sure Larry Livermore'll be making a scene about this.
Juliette Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Aw that sucks But it would be pretty sweet if GDC bought it haha.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 that really sucks. I totally say let's buy it with the forum. But really, I wish I could donate =(
Armageddon Flame. Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 As soon as my Mom comes home from work I'm going to ask if can use her Credit Card to donate, My friend and I are going to California next year on holiday and I've been looking forward to seeing a show in Gilman the most, I really hope it doesn't shut
Bexie. Posted April 22, 2010 Author Posted April 22, 2010 Guys, we already had a thread for this, Abbey opened it yesterday. Though, I reckon, the title is pretty misleading http://www.greendaycommunity.org/Forum/index.php?showtopic=78188 Sorry! I didnt realise I don't know about anything else, but I cant let this happen, it's too important to punk history. Gilman is a holy place. I might talk to some people I know to see if we can put on a charity gig where all profit goes to Gilman.. See if we can make it a frequent event.
Anja Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 It was kinda bad already when the CBGB's closed but Gilman....it's like the only true punk club left out there, so it seems to me anyway. I've only been there a few times but to me it seemed like a really close and huge community and without Gilman it definitely wouldn't be the same anymore.
Mrs.Kerplunk Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 oh fuck this sucks so much. i'd donate all my fucking money .. if i had it.
lizziebix Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 This is so sad. They need an additional $31,000/year to just pay their rent. So fundraising is going to be a serious issue every year from now on. Me thinks the landlord doesn't want to sell because he thinks he has a goldmine with the club and can make as much $$ as he wants.
Bexie. Posted April 22, 2010 Author Posted April 22, 2010 ^^ sad but true i'm afraid. They're going to struggle to keep the payments up this year. This sucks hairy balls. I fucking hate the fact I can't do anything about it :/ I bet they up the rent next year as well.
lizziebix Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Sad, but I think it's time they find a new location with cheaper rent. They could always still call it 924 Gilman. But of course it wouldn't be the same because the history is gone. But they could at least go on.
Abbey. Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 This is so sad. They need an additional $31,000/year to just pay their rent. So fundraising is going to be a serious issue every year from now on. Me thinks the landlord doesn't want to sell because he thinks he has a goldmine with the club and can make as much $$ as he wants. Actually, from what I have learned of this situation, the landlord is between a bit of a rock and a hard place with the kind of, shall we say, indebtdeness that he has on this property. The Gilman peops say he has been a very kind landlord since they started back in 1986. He has made what seems like some bad decisions and the raising of the rent to the club is one of the unfortunate outcomes of this situation. Gilman is in some kind of restricted use area of development for retail purposes in Berkeley, so ultimately there is a cap on what the actual property value must be worth. All to say that if we can help the folks at Gilman limp to the end of the year, it seems they have plans brewing to turn themselves into a grant-grubbing non-profit. Fundraising will ultimately have to be part of their future unless they can come to some kind of agreement and buy the property from the owner. Spread the word. This place is special to us as Green Day fans, and as fans of a creative independent music scene lets keep Gilman alive! Abbey
farley drexel hatcher Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 I wouldn't doubt that a large number of the bands who made it big after Gilman would go back there to do benefit shows to help keep the place going! It's a must, surely. The place needs to carry on. Has anyone from the UK donated through paypal?
04rebhop Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 That place can't go! Without Gilman i doubt i would be on GDC right now. I'm sure Green Day fans and the band themselves will help save it. I'd donate but i'm broke
persons Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 that sucks , now i know where all my money is gonna go.
sampy Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Oh no, that's sad, really. But we'll help them, right guys? I'm going to donate with some nice little amount and get that cool t-shirt too!
Abbey. Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Oh no, that's sad, really. But we'll help them, right guys? I'm going to donate with some nice little amount and get that cool t-shirt too! Thats SO TRUE! For $25 donation they''ll send you a T-SHIRT or a TOTE BAG.
Joy of suburbia. Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 arrgh...this is so not cool. When I get some money, I'm donating.
gdpony Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 I can see PHGP doing another show to raise some money. THIS! .... I read the article.. I cant believe the landlord increased the rent so much! he clearly wants to venue to be closed .. what an ass
mandajane Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 a good way to get a lot of money for gilman would to have pinhead gunpowder play there more often! DUHHHH
BillieJoeObsesser Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 no way! We need to save it!! I'm willing to donate to save it!!!
boosho Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Sad, but I think it's time they find a new location with cheaper rent. They could always still call it 924 Gilman. But of course it wouldn't be the same because the history is gone. But they could at least go on. I dont think they should move.. it will never be the same again.. I have never been there (since i live at the arse end of the world) but i can just imagine the history that would be all over the walls, the floors, everywhere that if its moved even if the name is the same the place and atomosphere wont be.. That place can't go! Without Gilman i doubt i would be on GDC right now. I'm sure Green Day fans and the band themselves will help save it. I'd donate but i'm broke There are many bands that have emerged from there, names that come to mind are Green Day of course, Offspring, Rancid... So i can imagine they will try to do whatever they can to help keep that place alive.. Well i really hope they do anyways.. Oh no, that's sad, really. But we'll help them, right guys? I'm going to donate with some nice little amount and get that cool t-shirt too! I donated, but told them not to send me anything since international shipping cost would probably end up costing the same as the donation.. But i really do hope that the place stays alive and greedy fucking landlords can rot in hell..
