Taking a more outward looking view of life is part of growing older and I think the way their lyrical style has changed is a testament to how honest and real Green Day are. They way Billie pushes himself to grow and improve as a lyricist, and the way his lyrics absolutely reflect whatever his current view of the world happens to be really shows how true to himself he is with his music. That ambition and honesty is what makes him such an amazing songwriter

If I ever had the chance to meet Billie, I think I'd want to thank him for sharing with us how the world looks through his eyes. Especially as you get older, that "no bullshit, this is the way it is" writing style he has really helps you sort out this mess of a world we live in. Then he takes these thoughts, wraps them in multiple-meaning, multiple-layer metaphors and wordplay, and then he goes one step further and links them to other ideas and concepts, other songs scattered across the same or even different albums....all just incredible. Once you discover the gift Billie has for being able to express himself like this, I think you discover what's really amazing and unique about this band. Oh yeah, and don't forget about him being backed up by the best damn rhythm section in the world.

I wanted to say American Idiot, but I just can not decide... Every album is different and that's why I love them. Sometimes I just need to hear something simple, honest, straight to the point - so I go and listen to 1,039 smoothed out slappy hours And lately I've been listening to Insomniac a lot and I absolutely love this album, I don't know why I never really read the lyrics... And 21st Century breakdown is absolutely incredible and amazing, I don't even have to mention that

In my opinion Billie is one of the best songwriters ever and that's what makes their songs (and everything about the band) so perfect =)

yeah I agree, I like the lyrics from Nimrod the best too. I just like the way he wrote them, theres no political meaning behind them (from what I can tell) and I can just relate to those lyrics more than in any other album.

I guess I love the lyrics from 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours ---> Insomniac the most because, for that age, the fact that he was able to write such captivating lyrics completely blows my fucking mind
