MTV says Green Day's new album will be "back to the basics"

Argh, Green Day never said anything about the new album being back to basics! All they said was they were going "back to basics" in the sense that they're just starting out on the creative process of a new album.

Green Day haven't said ANYTHING about what the new stuff they've been working on will be like.

It's cool to hear they're doing demos and stuff but they do them all the time, it's nothing to be excited about. The album is probably years away. One thing that's for sure is Green Day aren't going to go backwards and make a rehash of an old album, I'm glad to say.

Exactly my thoughts,

The dude from MTV who analyzed the LOTAG video (long shot, I know), did say "they're in the process of recording of what Billie Joe described as a "back-to-the-basics kind of record"" (literally, word for word quoted from the guy), which to me sounds more of a record that might be back to basics, instead of starting out. If we only had the MTV article, I would think it was back to basics in the sense of a fresh start, but that quote made me think.

I think the MTVs of the world have taken something Billie said out of context and just ran with it and made it into something massive... The whole "back to basics" thing is about interperation and everyone can choose to interpert that their own way, kinda what we are doing here, everyone has an opinion about what it actually meand and to be honest we will never know unless Billie actually clarifies what he meant..

I think we are all excited about the fact that a new album is being talked about one way or another but this is seriously early days... And i know this topic is more about what we would prefer as opposed to what was actually meant in the MTV article but i still think its very early days to be talking about a new album already..

Well, we have two diifferent opinions then...

That's fine, cause i don't think we're gonna agree on it - so let's leave it there :)

I totally see what you are trying to say in relation to what POP music means, but if you say that Pop just means popular.. Would you say that the Hiphop, rap (or whatever that shit that is classified as music is called) would you call that Pop hip hop???

I truely believe that pop has now become a Genre of music that just didnt exist before the word came out, and unfortunetly since then this has remained the popular music that the line is kinda blurred between whether Pop still means popular or if that is a genre.. I believe its the latter..

No, it's both. Warning is full of great pop songs like Church On Sunday, Castaway and Minority. Catchy, upbeat pop genius. That doesn't mean those songs aren't punk too. The word pop isn't an insult.

I have to disagree with you on this, i think the problem is that if we consider POP as a genre, it has never really been clarified what the exact genre is, Rock music is obvious, same with metal, grunge, hip hop, all these genres are very specific and easy to indentify but not pop.. and i agree Pop is not an insult but idk something about the word pop makes me cringe.. so it just me... :pinch:

I think we have gone way off topic now, but then again there is already another thread discussing the "on topic" topic so i guess we can continue this conversation.. :P

But she sounded awful on Letterbomb, ngl.

I don't think she really sang enough to really judge that. It wasn't like she was singing to impress or anything; I thought her part sounded cool.

Im so glad they're going to make more punk songs like from Dookie! Those songs are so awesome and stuff, they''re going to get alot of old fans back by making punk rock again :woot:

Im joking, so dont reply and tell me what 'back to the basics mean cause i already know

Please, no rock opera and no Hayley Williams. I would really like to see an album with songs in the same vein as 'Murder City', 'Horseshoes and Hand Grenades', and 'Lights Out'. When I heard 'Lights Out', I knew GD still had it in them and I think with this album they should, and just might, go in that direction.

Oh my god, I had a similar reaction when I heard those songs, ESPECIALLY Lights Out. When that b-side was released, I started freaking out because it was the song I had been waiting to hear; everything seemed kind of dead and boring to me, like it had lost its touch, until I heard that song. I was such a dork at the show I went to last year. I got up in the very front on the floor and wrote "Lights Out" on my hand, hoping they'd somehow read it and be like, "Oh let's play it." Lmfao, it was worth a shot. I'm pretty sure someone laughed at me about that too.

Green Day have been making amazing albums that I love for 20 years. I kind of trust them to decide what they're gonna do on their own ;)

I don't really care, to be honest.

I guess you're right, this has become a whole other conversation :D

I agree with you that POP is considered a genre these days, and we have a certain image of what it is. But still, i will keep from using the word in ways that it's not supose to.

I guess, if we have to use POP as a genre it have be more specific. We use the word to describe everything that's not edgy.

I don't see POP as an asult, but i do on behalf of Green Day, if people call their music pop. Especially when you know what is considered 'pop' these days. It's pure rock, with elements of other genres. They just have a sense of composing melodic tunes that catches the ear of alot of super cool people.

Let's say that it's kind of blurred, of what it exactly means. Because, as you said, when the term 'pop' arrived it classified a certain kind of music, and popular music haven't changed a whole lot genre-wise since then, it only have become shittier in my opinion

Eh, I didn't say that she was a bad singer, per sé. Only the part on Letterbomb sounds shit.

Green Day always do things differently on each individual album. By back to basics they probably do just mean a punky album with no theme running through but with a twist. I mean come on, would anyone just want them to make stuff like Dookie again? What would be the point.

there doesnt have to be a point. thats the thing. its all about the music who cares if there is a point or not

Topics have been merged. Poll was lost in the process, sorry. If you guys really want, I can manually re-add it, but it will start from 0 again.

I would prefer an album that's not anything like they've ever done. No more rock operas/concept albums. It was "cute" the first two times around, but I think the band owes it to themselves to not be U2. Preachy messages all around. It's time for the band to be fun again, in their own creative little way.

I had enough of people whining "no more concept albums" before 21st CB came out. It's starting again already?!

The band haven't told us anything about what the next album will be like whatsoever. Speculating about it at this stage is ridiculous.

Yes. I want to hear more songs in the direction of Lights Out.

I love AI and 21st, don't get me wrong, but I'd love to hear some things about pure love and hate. No government, no topic to write around, just raw emotion about anything and everything.

I agree with this. That would be amazing.

This....

AI was a rock opera yes, but i have said it before, each song can hold it own, you dont need to listen to whole thing to appreciate it (obviously when you do its better)

21CB is NOT a rock opera, there is no storyline, there is a theme and reoccuring characters but its not a rock opera.. but lets face it every single album before had some sort of theme its just now they are more obvious, and previous songs had characters in them maybe just not ones that appeared more than once on the album..

Im just a little sick of people complaining about "concept albums and rock operas" just for the sake of complaining..

Seriously MTV just made a mountain out of a molehill..

I really don't get what's so wrong with speculation. It's interesting to think about what direction they might go in for the next record.

People are just making suggestions and expressing their opinions.

I'd say there is a storyline in 21CB. There's a progression in Christian and Gloria's personalities, just like with JOS in AI. Neither album is very linear, but both are rock operas.
