I'm not American and not 18+ but I'm bored so I'll answer your questions. Hope it helps ^^

Do you like Green Day? Yes I do. That's why I'm here.

Do you like American Idiot? I love it.

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have? I'm not American so I guess I see the album differently, but yeah it does.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that? I don't mind if others label me but I don't do that myself. I am who I am...

Do you like American Idiot?

Yeah, it helped me through a lot of shit tbh.

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have?

I guess, yeah.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that? I'm simply myself. :D

Do you like Green Day?

Yes. Why else would I be here?

Do you like American Idiot?

Hell yeah! It's an epic album! It'll go down in history for sure.

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have?

Yes. I was only 8 (going on 9) when it came out, but even then I had feelings like "Why does everybody have to act like they like something" and "Why can't people say what they want?". Even then, I've always related to Green Day, and their songs. Now, I have a much more deeper understanding of everything, but my feelings still remain. So, the short answer: yes.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that?

Well, my friends say I'm their "rocker" friend  I'm not crazy on labels though. I mean, it is clear that some people are very different to others, and similar to their friends, but when a name is put on it, people can take it the wrong way. Some people call themselves "emo", while others hate it when the title is given to them. somebody might know that they are rich, but being called a "rich kid" might not exactly make them happy. I suppose if I were to "label" myself (in my opinion) I would be a nerd/rocker/weirdo0o0o0o/a whole lot of other stuff. To be honest, I am me.

Of course, I'd be lost without their music in my life.

That album reflects a lot of my opinions.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that?

I hate labels, people are people. Who cares if they're weird or don't fit in with the "cool crowd" we're all people, and shouldn't be classified.

Do you like Green Day?

Too much.

Do you like American Idiot?

Yes. I think it's one of the greatest albums of our generation. We don't have much to show for ourselves as a musical generation and American Idiot is at least ambitious and creative and provocative. All the makings of a great album.

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have?

Yes. I relate with the confusion, feeling misunderstood, feeling like the people around me don't represent me. I wouldn't say I have a huge political connection to it, but that's mostly because I'm not american.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that?

I'm not a punk at all. At least not what most people would label as a punk. But I follow my own morals and beliefs and avoid labeling people because I know that I don't fit any label and feel awkward when people try to put me in a box. I'm a bit of a realist, but also an optimist. I'm mostly an optimist until I really get to thinking about the future. Then I'm a pessimist & shit scared.

Definitely, I'd say it's tied with 21st Century Breakdown as my favorite album.

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have?

Yeah, it does.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that?

I'm just me. No labels. Labels are pathetic and for people who are too insecure with themselves to just be who they are.

Do you like Green Day?

Most definitely, too much probably.

Do you like American Idiot?

I love it.

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have?

Yes, it does. Especially the feelings and emotions in there. To a certain extent the political part too, but I'm not American so I never really experienced it first-handedly. I agree with most of what it stands for.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that?

I'm me, I do what I want and wear what I like, not what I should be doing or wearing or behaving according to a label. Maybe no label at all, probably a bit of everything, whatever you want, but I don't put myself in a box.

Thanks a lot for your responses, this is helping me out a lot. By all means, keep responding, no matter who you are. Also, I'd like to point out that these are research questions. They are for informational purposes only. They do not necessarily reflect my views or opinions. That said, I have a few more for you

(please answer truthfully)

Do you see the political commentary in the album on the war in Iraq and the Bush administration?

Did you know that it was a rock opera and has a continuous storyline?

Is there any other abstract social commentary that you see in the lyricism or musicality?

Did you know, on their first American Idiot tour, Billy came out in a George Bush mask and said "Hey everyone, My name is George Bush, but my friends call me asshole!" ?

What a beast.

I am myself. I'm ussually an optimist person but also very realist, too.

I'm not a big fan of labels. I don't exclude myself from the rest of the world but i don't like being a follower either..

Ohh more questions! Yays!!!

Do you see the political commentary in the album on the war in Iraq and the Bush administration? Oh definitely. But the lyrics also reflected how politics like to care more about themselves than the common people.

Did you know that it was a rock opera and has a continuous storyline? Yeah that's one reason why I like it so much!! It's like an audio book, but more interesting!

Is there any other abstract social commentary that you see in the lyricism or musicality? In a way, I feel they talk about the young teens of America that are trying to find themselves and have the life they want. Most parents or adults will look down at the teens and call them immature and they don't know what they're doing and they should get a life. But the teens are not immature and are actually trying to deal with the world crapping on them and giving up in them.

Did you know, on their first American Idiot tour, Billy came out in a George Bush mask and said "Hey everyone, My name is George Bush, but my friends call me asshole!" ?

What a beast.

Lol oh yeah! I love the part! Oh and his name is Billie, not Billy.

Where did you get those new questions from? I´m afraid I can´t find them anywhere but in your post!

Do you see the political commentary in the album on the war in Iraq and the Bush administration?

I see it more as commentary on the Bush administration than on the war in Iraq (which of course has something/everything to do with the Bush administration, but the war on itself, not really, if at all). The little commentary of war I see in the album seems more like a comment on war in general, or war in this era in general, or on the way the Bush administration handled/used/started war, not on one specific war.

Did you know that it was a rock opera and has a continuous storyline?

Yes.

Is there any other abstract social commentary that you see in the lyricism or musicality?

Other than what, the political commentary? Well, you could take parts of the storyline as "commentary" on how people deal with problems, but I personally wouldn't classify it as such. The songs mention social things (for lack of a better word), but it doesn't comment on it (example: Give Me Novacaine).

Did you know, on their first American Idiot tour, Billy came out in a George Bush mask and said "Hey everyone, My name is George Bush, but my friends call me asshole!" ?

What a beast. Yup, I know that. Well, I'm not sure if I knew about the mask part, but the rest, yep.

(and yeah, Billie, not Billy)

Where did you get those new questions from? I´m afraid I can´t find them anywhere but in your post!

Do you see the political commentary in the album on the war in Iraq and the Bush administration?

Yeah I do see that but I wouldn´t have guessed from merely listening to the album. It was the interviews and the discussions raised by the album that made me think that step further. And the media hype did it´s part as well. I also think the lyrics don´t point out explicitly the war in Iraq. The line "Sieg Heil to the president gasman" might lead your thoughts in that direction but that´s about it.

Did you know that it was a rock opera and has a continuous storyline?

I didn´t know that when I first listened to it. I didn´t see a connection between most of the songs. But now that I know about the continous storyline I can see the connections and the story behind it which makes it even more of an experience listening to the album.

Is there any other abstract social commentary that you see in the lyricism or musicality?

I think the lyrics can be interpretated in many ways. I think it is very citical about society. It´s about rebellion and about making your way in today´s world while staying true to yourself at the same time. The album criticizes war and terrorism as well as people suffering from the actions of politicians.

Did you know, on their first American Idiot tour, Billy came out in a George Bush mask and said "Hey everyone, My name is George Bush, but my friends call me asshole!" ?

What a beast.

Yeah I know about that. BJ kicked Bushes ass!

Do you like Green Day?

Yes, though love is more of an accurate term.

Do you like American Idiot?

Yes, one of my favorite albums of theirs.

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have?

Overall, I would say yes and no. In some respects, the rebellious theme embodied in the lyrics/characters probably reflects a younger version of myself. But, I think everyone can relate to the Jesus of Suburbia character's wish to escape life at times.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that?

I am not a judgmental person. Even so-called "nonconformists" are really pigeon-holing themselves into their own separate labeled group.

I am me.

PS: I'm 20 years old, American, and willing.

PPS: That sounds so wrong.

Do you see the political commentary in the album on the war in Iraq and the Bush administration?

Did I "see" it? yes, definitely, considering it was relevant in society at the time of the release of the album.

Did you know that it was a rock opera and has a continuous storyline?

Yes, that's one of the things I love about the album. The epic nature of the album itself is especially revealed in the album's two longest tracks--"Jesus of Suburbia" and "Homecoming."

Is there any other abstract social commentary that you see in the lyricism or musicality?

Definitely some strong harsh negative commentary against the media, but in "American Idiot" that is pretty direct.

I think in a way the album conveys the fact that we (as a society) must be held accountable for our own actions. Obviously, critics have labeled the album as "anti-Bush" or "anti-war" but really what it really was expressing was Green Day's discontent with our government's reaction to these crises. In this respect, the music demonstrates that what's done is done and now we have to live it---"it" metaphorically represented by a ravaged, war-torn society.

Did you know, on their first American Idiot tour, Billie**** came out in a George Bush mask and said "Hey everyone, My name is George Bush, but my friends call me asshole!" ?

anyways...

Do you like Green Day?

I do... Pretty much... I LOVE THEM xD

Do you like American Idiot?

Yes, is the perfect combination between the energy of their first records and their first experiments about conceptual songs in Warning (Blood, sex and booze, Misery). It also shows a reality that almost everyone has lived once: Who am I, what do I believe, is it right to be against the majority, etc.

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have?

Yes. It reflects the feeling of trying to figure it out who you wanna be and what do you believe, and you can see the struggle that Jesus has to go through to get to be who he is. And in the end, he's not the Jesus of Suburbia, he's just a boy who fell in love with a girl and got dumped for being an idiot that ended up being controlled by St. Jimmy, someone stronger... And you learn a lesson: Don't let anyone to boss you around.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that?

I am... me. I don't really believe in labels, because... Well, they don't usually aply to me  I'm not repressed, I do what I want, which would be a punk rocker behavior, but I'm not a punkrocker. I am neither an optimist or a pessimist, I'm a realist. So I don't know where to put me xD

Hope it was helpful... I'm kinda sleepy right now, so I'm not quite sure about what I wrote, so... sorry about any grammar issue!

Hey. You. I have some questions.

Do you like Green Day? soooooooooooooo much

.

Do you like American Idiot? total genius

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have? many--I think it takes the confusion/anger that so many people feel and throws it right into the face of people that just go along--la de da-with what's been happening in our country for a long while.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that? Strangely, I'm an optimist. I know that GD is rough, angry, a pessimist's dream--but they and their music has always stirred hope in me. Hope for something better tomorrow. Hope that acceptance of EVERYONE is in our future. Hope that I'm ok, you're ok.

The reason I am asking is because I am a college student who has chosen American Idiot as the subject for my final paper English paper ever. My question is What is American Idiot and who and how does it represent a group of Americans?

All of your responses are extremely important to my research, but if you are 18+, American, and willing, I would like to ask you some further questions.

Everyone please, help me out here. I am a big Green Day fan myself, but I can not only draw from my own perspective.

Is there any other abstract social commentary that you see in the lyricism or musicality? to me it hits on the prejudice of religion beautifully. such a paradox--even in so many religions that preach love and acceptance--it's only if you believe in what they believe--everyone else is WRONG and they are right. it's bull--i don't like all that judgmental bullshit. if you want to live your life a certain way and you aren't hurting anyone else--do it and its okay with me. i think that is a huge thing in this album.

Did you know, on their first American Idiot tour, Billy came out in a George Bush mask and said "Hey everyone, My name is George Bush, but my friends call me asshole!" ? doesnt bother me

Do you like Green Day?

"Like" is a bit of an understatement. I love Green Day.

Do you like American Idiot?

It's probably one of my favourite albums of all time.

Does that album reflect some thoughts and opinions you have?

Yeah totally. It doesn't do it just for me but I think for the whole generation also. When American Idiot came out, the youth of the day was disgruntled with the way politics were and the fact that the youth wasn't being listened to, when all the politicians were saying "We need to reach out to youths". They wonder why some of us rebelled but were unwilling to look at themselves and see that they were and still are are somewhat to blame. I think Green Day did that. They actually looked around them and saw society for what it truly was, they took note of the hypocracy within the world and they channeled our anger. They gave us a voice that someone would listen to.

Who are you? I want to know, what do you call yourselves? Are you punk Rockers? The repressed? The down and out? Posers? Realists? Optimists? Pessimists? The main stream? Nonconformists? Do you think labels are for soup-cans and that's that?

What would I call myself? I don't want to give the generic answer and say that labels are for soup cans, although that is what I believe. I am simply what I think everyone on this forum - I am sick of people feeling the need to conform to a certain standard, a certain label. Only because it creates elitist views and no one is going to be better than us just because we don't conform. That is exactly what Green Day is about, the option of just being ourselves - unafraid in being what we are.

No matter what people are always gonna label you and i myself am guilty of labeling people, but like you said they should only be on soup cans not on people

The reason I am asking is because I am a college student who has chosen American Idiot as the subject for my final paper English paper ever. My question is What is American Idiot and who and how does it represent a group of Americans?

in my oppion and American Idiot is someone who follows what ever everyone else says is right, even if they know its not. and to me It represents that they dont want to speak out against the majority

All of your responses are extremely important to my research, but if you are 18+, American, and willing, I would like to ask you some further questions.
