Tom Hanks may turn the stage version of American Idiot into a film

I wouldn't even remotely believe that thing about Julia Roberts. They're 'in talks' about getting the rights to the film, there is no way they'd have any idea about casting yet.

THIS.

Well, it's not just any kind of rumor anymore:

http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2010/03/25/green-days-billie-joe-armstrong-confirms-tom-hanks-production-company-talking-about-movie-of-american-idiot/

“American Idiot” is having quite a week.

The new Broadway show based on the hit album by punk rockers Green Day started previews in New York Wednesday amid reports that Tom Hanks is eager to turn the musical into a feature film.

“It’s like, writing the song ‘American Idiot,’ and then next thing you know Tom Hanks is talking about it — it’s kind of mind-blowing,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said in an interview on Thursday.

Armstrong said that he has not sat down with Hanks to discuss it, but the actor’s production company is interested. “They’ve been talking about it,” he said. “It’s a little on the early side to say what’s going to come of that. It’s really fun to think about, though.”

Earlier this week, Deadline.com reported that Playtone partners Hanks and Gary Goetzman were interested in a movie version of the musical. Entertainment sites have cited reports that Hanks wants to finalize a movie deal before the musical officially opens on April 20.

The 2004 album is a rock opera about three working-class friends in post-9/11 America: one leaves for the military, another for the city and the third stays with his pregnant girlfriend in a small town. Last year, when the musical adaptation debuted at California’s Berkeley Repertory Theatre, it brought in the biggest advance ticket sales in the theater’s 41-year history.

Armstrong wrote the book for the musical with “American Idiot” director Michael Mayer, who won a 2007 Tony Award for the Broadway rock musical “Spring Awakening.” Armstrong says if an “American Idiot” movie gets made, he wants to keep Mayer involved: “He’s an experienced dude,” he said. “This thing has become his baby as much as mine.”

I've seen Mamma Mia and if they do as good of a job as they did on Mamma Mia, we'll be enjoying the movie. Let's just hope that they actually do it. I'd like to see how they work with ideas and make it into a reality.

Hmm, thanks for posting.

It kind of bugs me though that they mixed the story of the album and the musical up ("The 2004 album is a rock opera about three working-class friends in post-9/11 America: one leaves for the military, another for the city and the third stays with his pregnant girlfriend in a small town..")

You're welcome. :)

And yeah, that annoyed me, too. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but it wouldn't have killed the author of the article to take 5 minutes and read the storyline on Wikipedia.

Yeah, I read that and wanted to post about it in the musical thread. But I forgot, so I'll post it here xD

It's interesting. But they mixed up the record/musical indeed. They say the album is about those three friends and blah blah but that's not true. It's obviously the story of the musical

I still don't really know what to think about this whole movie idea though. IF they're going to film it anyway, I hope they stick to the musical story. I'm curious how that'll turn out.

Hmm interesting If they did I wonder how it would turn out.

Maybe it would be awesome maybe not.

If it does happen I might go and see it.

I could see this either being a huge success or a huge disaster.

If they cast the right people, it would probably be good.

But, eh, I'm a little...possessive...with this. It's gonna suck if people didn't even fucking realize there was a story there before, and then they become all uber obsessed and act like they knew it all along after seeing the movie.

.... why would Pattinson be in it? He's not a singer or a dancer.

Just because Billie thinks he's a good actor. Rob Patt was good as Cedric Diggory...he looked really hot in Harry Potter too!

Billie said that Rob Patt and Ellen Page would be a good Christian and Gloria.
