Tom's looking out for his fellow Oakland boys! Sheesh, what's with all of the Julia Roberts hate? I mean, she's not right for the project, but she's a good actress.

I think making the musical into a film is one of the best ideas yet!

Then we all have chance to see AI the Musical in some form. ;D

I can't see any Julia Roberts hate in this thread. Just general amusement at NME's ridiculous suggestion that she would play the lead role.

Edit: Lol I just saw the hate. Disregard this post

There is no way Julia Roberts could be in a lead role. The musical storey is about young adults, there is no way she could be taken seriously in a role as a young adult. It needs to be someone much younger, I bet NME haven't bothered to check what the musical is even about.

JULIA ROBERTS AS LEAD ROL? WTF?! XD

I want Tim Burton directing, and noone will change my mind!

pretty sure i shrieked when i read that. that would be so cool, plus tom hanks is super amazing so he'd probably do a good job and get talented people to help out. :D

This and this. I'd be pretty excited to see this... as long as it doesn't turn out like mama mia  That wasn't the best movie ever that's for sure. I'm just really happy that the musical is getting all the buzz it deserves :D

Julia Roberts, WTF?

Anyway, I don't really know how I feel about this. I love Green Day of course and I'm a huge musical fan, so I'd so be there opening weekend. I like Tom Hanks a lot, but I don't know if he'd be the right person to turn American Idiot into a movie. I'm also concerned that if this were made into a movie, it would not do well at the box office. The biggest audience for modern movie musicals is women and I don't think American Idiot: The Movie is something that would appeal to the average female movie-goer. Mamma Mia was a very light, fun, feel-good kind of movie, it's no big surprise that one was a big hit. But American Idiot wouldn't be like Mamma Mia, and it seems like darker musicals (except for Cabaret and West Side Story) typically aren't as successful as the feel-good ones. Nine wasn't a real upbeat musical, and that one failed pretty hard commercially. I think this is something that would ultimately be best done as an independent film.

What about Chicago? Even dark musicals can work if they're done well. I'm not saying that Richard Gere should be cast as JoS but I think you get my point. :) The kids from the vid a few years back could pull it off well, at least so long as they can sing rather than "just" act over someone else's soundtrack.

You usually don't get Tim Burton without Johnny Depp showing up in there someplace too, so be careful what you wish for. :)

THIS is a great mental image.

Hmm, I guess I just didn't really consider Chicago a dark musical. I actually do like darker musicals, Cabaret is one of my favorite movies ever. I just think that a lot of people are under the mistaken impression that a musical automatically means lightness and good times, so when they see a musical that isn't like that, they're disappointed. I could easily see people going into an American Idiot movie expecting something like Mamma Mia since it's a musical and hating the movie just because it's not what they wanted.

If there were some way to work Bette Davis into this scenario, I think my head would explode from seeing so many random things that I love put together in one place.

I forgot to mention, Bette Davis is go-go dancing with Russsel Brand and they are both wearing Banana suits.

hope it wasn´t posted before.

a member wrote yesterday he/she is hoping that julia roberts won´t be in the movie, i just thought it was a joke but read the article :-(

I wouldn't even remotely believe that thing about Julia Roberts. They're 'in talks' about getting the rights to the film, there is no way they'd have any idea about casting yet.

I can't see Julia Roberts playing any part in it, but who knows? lol, But yeah I also think it's wayy to early to start thinking about casting. But with my luck, the cast will come up in the next month. lol

According to Tré in this video interview on MTV they start filming tomorrow morning and George Lucas and Spielberg interested :woot::lol:

Tre is hilarious :lol:American Idiot Film interview with Green Day

If you read it Billie also says he has "cast it in his mind" I wonder who he has in mind :ermm:

Although I like the idea of Tom Hanks being in charge of this, I hope it's more Forrest Gump than Da Vinci Code in quality, or else it will just be an epic fail.

Thats cool. Aslong as Tom Hanks stars in it

You just successfully implanted a mental image of Green Day dancing in those Super Trouper suits in my head.

Like this (I couldn't find a shot from the actual movie)

Haha, okay xD thanks for posting

"From what I understand, if you stick to the people that are part of the play, it comes out better that way," Armstrong said. "Like I said, ['Idiot' director] Michael Mayer, he stuck to the integrity of the record, and the story of the record, and the music of the record. And I think if it was to be translated to the film, I think it would be the same thing." I don't know exactly what he means by that, that the musical actors will be in the movie?

and already a cast in his mind... didn't he mention the Juno girl and Robert Pattinson for if there was gonna be a movie made for 21st CB (that was really just a hypothetical question, but he mentioned those two). Let's hope that if the movie happens it won't be that.

Johnny would be a damn sexy St. Jimmy. Tony Vincent's 36, so you never know, Johnny could work.

I <3 Johnny...

But in musicals it's easier to pass someone off as younger/older than in a movie. And there's a fair difference between 36 and 47.

and now perez hilton is talking about it...
