AfterShock Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 I've always thought of Green Day as more pop-rock than punk. I'm sure others disagree
spark in the night Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 bahhhhh no. they revived themselves as a band, but not the music genre as a whole
Malleus Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 I found a comment on a YouTube video that sums up my feelings on this issue: "i've been a green day fan since i was 10. i am 23 now. thinks this is one of their best songs ever. truly admire them for daring to break cultural stereotypes and show what punk is really about all these time. truly inspirational. living legend." (the song was When It's Time)
Guest Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Green Day WAS punk back in the Sweet Children - Kerplunk Days, now their like Alternative. Even though i LOVE Green Day i admit they arent punk.
Lithium Doll Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 green day is and was a pop band... not that there's anything wrong with that, but its the truth
VivaLaRosalee Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 their not old punk, from the 70s and 80s/. there modern punk.
Maddy. Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 their not old punk, from the 70s and 80s/. there modern punk. That's a new look on things. Whatever modern punk is supposed to mean.
mandajane Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 punk is dead to anyone who didnt get it to begin with.
Maddy. Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 punk is dead to anyone who didnt get it to begin with. This has never made any sense. Not to me, at least.
Iain Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Punk wasn't dead to begin with. Punk is all around. Punk isn't a lifestyle. Punk isn't a certain form. Punk isn't a fashion statement. Punk isn't a message. Punk is many ideas. Punk is many forms. Punk is many styles. Punk is many fashions. Punk is many different directions. Punk is often seen as one style and one direction. Well I don't think so. Green Day are punk, they always were and always will be. The way they've changed over the years is phenomenal and what I said above is exactly what they've gone through. Punk never had a revivial, but people see it as a dead art yet Post-Modernism is very much alive in Music, Art, Fashion and Media, we just fail to see it. Punk is not one style or direction, or idea and I find it a cardinal sin for anyone to say so. I don't like it when someone says what's punk and what isn't, they're wrong in so many degrees. Punk comes in many different forms, shapes and sizes, it isn't a set idea or a set style. Punk is always changing. Green Day didn't revive punk - but they took it to the next level and they keep making a new level for it everytime they make something new.
Maddy. Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 To be quite honest, I couldn't give a damn. I love Green Day no matter what label you stick on their music. It doesn't matter to me.

ihaveapenisbitch! Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Punk never died. Punk isn't a music genra it was a social idea from the 70s/80s. It was made popular by the establisment to take any kind of thread out the movement, they took the meaning out of it. Those ideals live on, however the impact and the effect will never ever be repeated. Green Day for all that they are are punks, they live by the ideals and the belifes that the moment held. Their music however isn't "punk" its rock. Sorry to be harsh but its true. Then again they do something more important than other "punk" bands, they live by example. Thats so much more fucking powerful than the music itself.
Ellenkc Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Trying to decide what is punk and what isn't punk is contadictory. Punk isn't supposed to have rules, you do whatever the fuck you want to do. That's what Green Day have always done. I don't think thery revived punk at all, mainstream punk maybe, but not punk. Punk never died it just wasn't played on MTV, the underground scene and the lifestyle never went away. I'm not that bothered about whether Green Day are punk or not, I didn't know what punk was when I first started listening to Green Day and I'll be the first one to admit I'm not an expert on the subject at all, it's a community and a lifestyle that I'm not apart of, I've got nothing against it but I try to stay away from labels and the problems they can cause.

Its not about doing what you want for the fun of it, its about doing what you feel is right regardless of what others thing.

ihaveapenisbitch! Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 fo sho Thanks for noticing the spelling, ugh don't debate anything vaguely philosophical with a fever it will lead to strange typos. I don't know I get really pissed off when people bring it down to the "doing what you want level" there was real power meaning and reason in the first wave of punk, don't cheapen it like that.

Lu_S Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Green Day didn't revive the punk they revive the music in general! There are few bands that aren't a piece of junk!
Maddy. Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Green Day didn't revive the punk they revive the music in general! I call bullshit. Bam, you get the cards.
urika sebastian Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Its not about doing what you want for the fun of it, its about doing what you feel is right regardless of what others thing. exactly.
Lu_S Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 I call bullshit. Bam, you get the cards. I don't think it's bullshit! Nowadays the only thing that the bands are concerned is with the appearance! Nobody gives a shit for music anymore! Do any crap just to launch the album once and have more exposure in the media! They just want to get more attention! What it means "Bam, you get the cards"
benhww Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Personally I think Punk is about doing it your way. Green Day are doing it their way, Sex Pistols did it their way. Ramones did it their way. As long as you do it your way and consider yourself a punk band then I think you've kind of got it right. Don't listen to anybody and do it your way. There's no such thing as a true punk or a punk 'purist'. It's to hard a concept/lifestyle to define and putting rules on what it means to be a punk or what you have to do to be a punk is completley anti-punk. Do it your way.
