ChelseaWhatsername Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 So my name is "buddy" now. ... Eh, friendly enough. Well, you know. Same thing was said about Good Riddance - releasing a soft song like that (although it's meant to be bitter) was a "punk thing to do". Because no other punk band would do that.
giygas...feels...good Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Yeah, you're right...maybe daddy Yankee is punk too
Trefro Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 I guess the whole idea of Green Day is breaking away from everything else. If you listen around you will never find anything quite like them. I guess because of that everyone calls em punk.
Bubbles. Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Yeah, they are. pop-punk/punk rock. I mean, people criticize them for signing to a major label. Punk is (partly) about doing what you want, despite what others might say or think. So to criticize Green Day for that makes them hypocrites, because it's basically criticizing them for doing what they want to do. It's obvious they're not doing this for money, they're doing it because they have a passion for music and they have fun doing it - Is making a living from doing something you love such a crime? And they've definitely helped keep punk alive, I mean think about the amount of bands that wouldn't exist if it weren't for Green Day, think about the amount of people today that wouldn't have even been introduced to punk rock if it weren't for Green Day...
Just Kate Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 i think you should make a poll for it here i think, well, i think at the time when they hit mainstream punk was kinda good then because of Offspring and stuff, but they definately put their hearts and souls into punk's widespreading. there are some songs that are sooo hard and sooo good and cool and if punk was ever dead before, they definately resurrected it
gdpony Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I think they did. at the time Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and groups like those, were around but were not exactly punk. Green Day did have punk roots, so therefore they brought back punk, but as always we have to label everything, and for being mainstream it couldnt be called "punk", so it was called pop punk, punk rock, alternative etc... But Green Day is different, they have done whatever seems right for them at the moment, wether it is an album about not growing up, a punk ballad, a rock opera.. a musical! .. etc.. they´re not afraid to be different and critcized, and for them thats being punk! .. and for me it is too , anyways for me, punk nowadays has become a trend, kids use it as an ecuse to dress up in black wear make up , and be "different". so lets not fight about labels and what people have turned into a trend, lets talk about music
Bubbles. Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 ,punk nowadays has become a trend, kids use it as an ecuse to dress up in black wear make up , and be "different". so lets not fight about labels and what people have turned into a trend, lets talk about music It hasn't become a trend, any one who thinks "dressing differently"/dressing like a "punk"... Is not punk. A lot of people these days misinterpret punk completely. Although I've noticed most of them seem to think that listening to certain bands, i.e the Sex Pistols makes them punk... Then some of them will go on to criticize Green Day, and say that the Sex Pistols are "real punk", forgetting that the Sex Pistols were a manufactured band. And it seems Mr. Lydon himself seems to forget that, too. But I know a lot of people that aren't like that, and don't misinterpret punk, so it hasn't become a trend.
Juliette Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Idk, I don't think they were ever really that "punk" but to me punk has always been a bit of a poser-y genre.
Bubbles. Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Idk, I don't think they were ever really that "punk" but to me punk has always been a bit of a poser-y genre. Probably because it's full of contradictions :/
_all_is_well_ Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I think there should just be a Green Day genre then this whole arguement could be done with. On our ipods under Genres "Green Day" would could be there haha.
Juliette Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I just class GD as "rock". Like yes okay, sometimes I'd say it's more punk-rock but that's sort of how I think of their earlier stuff and even then it's not quiiite how I think of punk. And then other times it's more pop-rock, and sometimes I wouldn't even say it's rock at all. I think that's partly why I like them as well, that they can do so many different genres and it's still them, and I think that's because they don't really have a category that fits them exactly. PHGP is pretty much what I think punk music is haha, maybe I'm wrong but that's how I see it.
ParadoxAndPlaid Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I don't think one band can be credited for reviving it. Punk fades in and out like any other genre of music. But I try not to classify bands and their music like that anyway. I can appreciate the music itself more that way.

Punk became trendy therefore it has been resurrected as trendy... not as punk. Punk is unpopular. Green Day is popular for doing unpopular stuff... but once someone mimics Green Day they are trendy. I hate being trendy. I like Green Day. Go figure... I am going to over think this and fry someone's brain.
ChelseaWhatsername Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Just think of Billie's point on what punk is. Kicking over the trash can. Since he did it, and he was the only one, he was punk. But since the guy who asked what punk was kicked over the trash can, it's trendy. Point is, punk is only punk if you're the only one. Punk is about being an individual. And I can't think of any other band on earth like Green Day. I don't think I'm making an exact point. I'm just confusing myself. Well.... it's something to dwell on either way.

That is exactly what I was thinking about in my remark. The whole refuse receptacle incident. You are not confusing yourself at all.. roll with it! Let us say for argument: Billie Joe Armstrong had a soul mate... would that make him trendy? I think not because they would have different backgrounds. The point: Green Day will always be punk because everyone is an individual and therefore everyone is punk in that way... but by being individuals they are all trendy... Does anyone's brain hurt yet? Heh... I think I just killed punk again by making everyone punk then making them all trendy. It's a repetitive circle! Complete REDUNDANCY!
ChelseaWhatsername Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I like the word redundant. Green Day taught me that word. SO, moral of the story, Green Day revived punk (proven by: only band to make a rock opera, only band I know that can release songs like Christian's Inferno and Last Night On Earth on the same album, went against the rules of Gilman and signed to a major label, ect.)!!!! Suck those bananas.
Poo Flinger Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Jesus was Punk, Pilate was Punk for refusing to take part in his death... the mob was trendy. Yes, I am watching the show on "who framed Jesus" right now.

Opezi Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 for a while they did. i think. suring 1039 - dookie era. got evryone involved with the punk scene and really made it seem like punk was alive and well again. but now that thier music has changed(yet still is punk rock but not to the naked eye. ppl dont know punk. well i no evyrone here on GDC does lol well at least i hope so) and other bands are coming up. bands that dont even play real music anway. in a sense punk still needs to be revived or at least it does now.

Yeah, I guess. I'd say they still do keep it alive though, y'know with like introducing a lot of people to it. I have friends, and I know of others who have started their own little punk rock bands because of Green Day haha xD

biwic Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 No no, you don't get me, you'll see, that buddy up there said that making last night on earth was really punk, so I replied, "if I make a lot of ballads I become super punk?" it's just a twist to what that buddy said! no, it's really not what 'that buddy' said. they said A ballad. not a lot.
CarnageXB Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 in my eyes Green Day isnt even punk. Thats just my opinion.
