Sassy Sassafras Roots

:woot: Yay!

I do think of it as a love song. All he wants to do is spend time with that person, and that's sweet. But it seems darker than that. If he wasn't spending time with her he'd likely be lonely and depressed on his own "with nothing else to do". He's not only with her to enjoy her company but also to "ward off regrets" and take his mind off the fact he's going nowhere and has nothing to do. I think it's a darker kind of love song about needing to be with a person.

wow, that's interesting :) I never would have thought of Sassafras Roots as a 'dark' song haha...but I can totally see your point!

That's one of the reasons I love these Song of the Week threads :D

I dunno if dark was the right word to use. I used to think of it as much more of a happy, sweet love song but the more I've thought about it over time, and also the more I've read this thread , the less happy it seemed.

I love them too :D. I think this is the most thought provoking Song of the Week thread I've ever read.

I love this song. :D The lyrics are quite simple, but yet so awesome at the same time.

I love this song so much! It was one of the first songs I heard off of Dookie, and it always makes me think of one of my old friends :)

I think that after I bought Dookie, and listened to it pretty intensely (this was in 2004), this was the first song that I didn't know already (Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, Longview, When I Come Around), that I for some reason fell in love with. It wasn't anything I could particularly relate to, but it was catchy and I thought it sounded cool. I think it was one of the first that I could distinguish from the rest of the songs, too.

i love singing this song! especially the repeated "may i waste your time too?" at the end.

like everyone else said, it's sucj a simple song but it definately leaves a mark in our hearts <3

Some day I'll walk up to either Billie Joe, Mike or Tre while they're doing the most monotonous looking thing in the world like watching paint dry, and I'll go "May I waste your time too?" Just to be like "Yeeeahhh, lovin' the Roots!" :D

I just figured out how to pronounce the title of this song. I always said "SassaFARAHs Roots" before.

Awesome! Go being a Green Day nut.

I like this song, because, like She, it's a song that isn't really a love song, but still expresses that desire to be with someone, even in a platonic way.

...and at the same time it's self-deprecating to the point of being comical -- Billie's sprinkling "waste" and "wasting" all over the place hammers that point home over the crescendo of surging guitars and Tre's maniacal drum rhythms. Simple lyrics, yes, yet still a lot of fun to listen to.

Had to get my $0.02 in on this thread before the new SOTW is pinned!
