Anja will go crazy when she sees this thread

Oh God, I think Sassafras Roots, along with Basket Case, could easily be my theme song right now  I can relate to the lyrics so much now, though I wish I couldn't :P It's not my favourite off of Dookie, but it doesn't mean I don't like it.

I googled sassafras to try to find any relation with general meaning of this song but it seems it's another random title. Unless Billie explained it and I don't know about that :D

Why have some words been capatalised ?

That's what I've been thinking too.

:woot: Love you, girl! Rock on! :D

Hee hee hee hee hee! :D :D :D

Anja and I should throw Sassafras Roots a party, we love it so much! :woot:

It doesn't mean alot to me lyrically compared to some of my other favourites, but musically it's just one of the best. Love it so, so much.

I love how "May I waste your time too" is repeated so much throughout the song, it's really pushing some emphasis. Just pure, ultimate brilliance.

Haha, Sassafras roots party  I'm SO in for that! Are we gonna waste some time smoking Sassafras roots all day long?

I can't believe the guys played this song at the Nokia show! It was mind blowing and a lot of fun to sing and jump to. Definitely one of my favorite songs of off Dookie.

And I can't believe there's no video of that  I BEGGED Mike and Billie to play this song at the DNA Lounge show last year but none of them could remember the chords and lyrics

Anja will go crazy when she sees this thread

 Just love this song and I can't even tell exactly why! As many said already, it's very simple and besides the simple, yet brilliant lyrics, it just has one of the best melodies to me. I love the intro and the whole song is just very catchy! And besides that, listening to the song always makes me feel better. And a song that makes people feel better is just a perfect song!

I have many favourite Green Day songs, but this is definately one of them. It's simple and sweet, yet absolutely brilliant. I'm just as in love with it now as I was the first time I heard it

I love this song. At first it was because it was catchy and fun. Now it's more because I totally relate to it. I sit around wasting away most days, as do my friends, so it's like our life story. I'm good at wasting other peoples time :)

Hopefully sometime in this life time they'll actually play this song live... it's such a great song.

Haha of course, I forgot that it'd be THAT type of party!:shifty:

This song is tied with Longview as being my favourite from Dookie. And that's a really big deal. In fact, Sassafras Roots in itself is a big deal.

Ron Burgundy should have been like "I don't know how to put this...but Sassafras Roots, it's kind of a big deal. People know it."

That's right, this week I learned how to spell sassafras without stopping to think about it. Please use this thread to discuss your thoughts and feelings about the song.

I always end up writing like 3 S instead of 2

and... i don't know, I used to HATE this song, but it's so damn catchy, that know I kinda like it  I actually love the "well i'm a waste like you, with nothing else to do, may I waste your time too?" line

EDIT: By the way... WHAT THE HELL ARE SASSAFRAS (did i wrote that right?) ROOTS?! xD

This is such a nice sweet cute song

and I though Sassafras was a kind of tree or something. So sassafras roots would be the roots of that tree. Seems like a random name, but it's possible that sassafras symbolises something too or something.

edit: yeah. Wikipedia is your friend. Not sure about the symbolizing thing though, I think it's just a random title, I can't find anything that could symbolize anything in the song (unless the song is secretly about aromatherapy or poisonous (sp?) food, but somehow I doubt that )

This is a song I always used to skip, because it never stood out to me.

I think a lot of people can relate to it, though. I think everyone has someone in their life they feel like they're just wasting time with. It could be in a positive way, or a negative way, I don't know.

Yay for Sassafras Roots!

Apparently sassafras roots are one of the main ingredients in root beer...so maybe the name of the song symbolises how someone drinking it all day constitutes as a waste of time?

I always wondered about the meaning behind this song. After reading up on it, I found that alot of people have thought it was about being in a relationship that's no longer exciting or interesting. I would tend to agree with that, but some of the lyrics give me conflicting ideas. Like, the line "So why are you alone wasting your time? When you could be with me wasting your time" makes me think that it's more of a strong desire to be with that person. He's describing mundane activities such as "smoking cigarettes" and "roaming around your house" and it's like as if he just wants to be a part of that, no matter how much of a waste of time it is. Also, the line "Applying myself to wasting your time" could mean that he just wants to latch on to the person and is motivated by it, but "I'm just a parasite wasting your time" could mean that he's just attached to them, but without any sort of contribution...i.e a waste of time.

This has never really been a favorite of mine, but when I do listen to it I really appreciate the lyrics. It's like a love song for the 'slacker generation'.

Agree, and seriously, LOLFUCKINGL at your new username

Oh but they have! Once so far if I'm correct at the Nokia show in LA :)

I like how you put that, lol! I always think of it as a 'misery loves company' kinda thing. Hey, you have nothing much going on, I have nothing much going on, let's do nothing much together. Nothing cryptic here - and it does fit in with the theme of the album, methinks :)

I've always liked this song - it caught my ear the first time I heard it. It's catchy and melodic, and I love the bass line. It sticks in my head whenever I hear it. I've heard it a million times, but I still get the words wrong when I sing it, lol!

This song is probably my 2nd favorite song off of Dookie. I loved it the first time I heard it.

I agree... this song and Longview are very similar.

According to that wiki I posted earlier, it isn't an ingredient of root beer since 1960 or so because it causes liver damange and cancer.

I don't think of the song necessarily as a love song, more of a "I've got nothing to do, you've got nothing to do, let's do nothing together", although it's also got a kind of thing in it of "I like you, I like to hang out together" and all, but that doesn't have to be love, could be just friends too.

...I just realized I pretty much said the same Cheryl said. didn't do it on purpose, haha.

Haha really? I just read it somewhere and thought "Oooh, interesting!" Thanks for informing me!
