steph23 Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I absolutly love this song! when i get my acoustic guitar at christmas thats going to be the first song i learn! I couldnt believe it when they played Macy's Day Parade at Wembley! I got all emotional
J'net Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 OK so I have questions about those bold ones 'Stuffed in a coffin 10% more free Red light special at the mausoleum' What does the first one mean? And is the second one reference to an TLC song or is it reference to something else? I'm sorry if those two are obvious, but then again, for me as non-English speaker they are not Well, stuffed in a coffin is an irreverent way of saying "put" into a coffin. And it follows from the line before (It's a lifetime guarantee ... that someday we'll all be put in a coffin). Red light special indicates a special sale event going on ... at the mausoleum, where you can get 10% more free when you buy your coffin. There's a lot of subtext here, too, but I like to leave that for everyone else to interpret and discuss .
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I always thought "stuffed in a coffin 10% more free" was also sort of saying that you get stuffed in your coffin, quick and easy, and your coffin is smaller/too small because that's cheaper (10% more free). I'm not sure if any of that makes sense at all, though, I just automatically assumed it... (hello language barrier, sorry if I explained that very crappy) I like J'net's explanation of it better xD

I like that, thank you Haha then I feel silly about thinking about the TLC song But I thought if he could mention a movie title, he could mention a song as well Besides, it was the only thing that showed up when I googled it. And another thing -- I can't always tell what lines are linked, like where one thought ends and the other begins.
green_melly Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 thanks for your thoughts j'net and the others ! i've never pictured those phraseslike that ^^ Macy's Day Parade is definately one of my fav Green Day songs WARNING

I'm sorry if those two are obvious, but then again, for me as non-English speaker they are not When I hear the 10% more free line, I think of it as like even when we die, all them companies are still trying to get us to buy their stuff and they don't actually care about the size or if it is comfortable (sutffed). My god I did not explain that the way I wanted. I'm pretty sure I read that in the song meanings section though. edit: I just checked and it was like, companies our using our deaths for their profit. Yeah, I'm not one with words.
mitzymoo Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 one of my favourite songs from my favourite album its one of the first green day songs i ever heard and that got me into green day
Nikki_Nimrod Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I just read over this thread, and i now appreciate and love the song ten times more than i already did! It's great seeing how everyone interprets different verses & phrases, i had the same questions as a lot of people. Thanks so much! I've always loved this song not for the lyrics, but for the music...something about it is just so comforting to me. I love Billie's voice in it, and it always calms me down or helps me to relax. It's beautiful!
Alan86 Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Just saw the music video on Kerrang about an hour ago. Not there best music video but the song is good enough to overlook that. My favourite album, great song to finish an album.
saraHsunshine Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I can not get enough of this album This song is great, amazing lyrics, amazing sound. What more can I say?!
armatage Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 This one is definitely one of my most fav songs ever (not only green day most faves list). Gives me shivers down my spine most of the time I listen to it. I kinda agree with Billie about the meaning of the song. I had slightly different meaning of this before this thread. I was really sad when bought international supervids and didn't found this song's video on the dvd, not like it's the best video but that song has deserved to be on the dvd.
Liam Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 im actually listening to this song now on International Superhits
DecanoLP Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Since I heard this song live in Hamburg, I love it. Beautiful.
Abbey. Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 OK so I have questions about those bold ones 'Stuffed in a coffin 10% more free Red light special at the mausoleum' What does the first one mean? And is the second one reference to an TLC song or is it reference to something else? I'm sorry if those two are obvious, but then again, for me as non-English speaker they are not i cant believe how many folks around here are non-native english speakers and express themselves so beautifully...quite humbling to me. i think of the line STUFFED IN A COFFIN 10% MORE FREE rather funny as consumer irony ... er, you're dead but 10% more FREE! RED LIGHT SPECIAL AT THE MAUSOLEUM...i always thought it should be BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL (american slang for something on "special sale" at a big-box store (origin: k-mart). although the imagry using "red" light is much darker.
lovelyrita Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Woow, I love this song, it's a perfect ending of Warning. And I like your explainations, it's always easier to understand the song, cause I had a little problems with this one .
LilyMarie Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 HERE It has Tell Me When It's Time at the end though. Thank you!
Smoothed Out Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Everytime I see this video my Mum keeps reminding me of how much Billie looks like this guy we know. It's pretty weird everytime we see him now! Macy's Day Parade isn't one of my favs-but I still like its simplicity and under-lying meaning.
Juliette Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I have to insert my opinion here and say that I think both the song and the album as a whole are seriously underrated I love the way Billie plays with words in this song. I’ll just give one example – “With a credit report for duty call.” That’s three phrases mingled into one “credit report,” “report for duty,” and “duty call.” On the first bit, I totally agree. Warning is one of my favourite albums, no doubt about it. I don't get why it gets so much criticism. And on the 2nd, I finally get that line now & absolutly love it
cherylr Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 The Night of the Living Dead is on its way (it's the next thing scheduled on TV - maybe he sees an ad for it). I actually always thought this referred to Black Friday... consumerism at its utmost.
Katarina. Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 How is it possible I didn't know this was the next song of the week until today? I love Macy's Day Parade, the Warning album, and just the Warning era in general
**She** Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Good choice! This song was played as the first accoustic encore (right before Good Riddance) at my first Green Day concert. I always liked the song but I am completely in love with it since then!
LilyMarie Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 The Night of the Living Dead is on its way (it's the next thing scheduled on TV - maybe he sees an ad for it). I actually always thought this referred to Black Friday... consumerism at its utmost. Yup. All the zombies out for 3 am Black Friday sales is what it says to me, too.
Metanoia Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 aaww....love it =) ♥ the first time i heard it i was just like    and i couldnt stop listen......
