Ally Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 my dad randomly decided he wanted this at his funeral the other day i like this song, though used to love it, but now i only like it!
rinu Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 And the video is terrible. Yeees, true.I forgot to say that.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Hmm I used to think the video was awful, but I watched it before posting, I can't really form an opinion about it. As I said before, it's kinda cool in a way, but in some way it's kinda boring as well.. I can't make up my mind about it.
Mar Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Beautiful song. It isn't in my favourites, but it's still beautiful. It does really bother me though that I don't get all the references in the lyrics. I don't get that "credit report for duty call" thing mentioned in the OP (I don't know what either of those things is), and there's a couple more of those things because I don't know what the words mean, and I think there are a couple more things I just don't see the cool thing in it. Hell, I don't even know what a/the? Macy's Day Parade is. On the video, I think on the one side it's cool, and that it's all in one shot and all, and just the general atmosphere in itt, but on the other side, I know people are gonna hate me for saying this, but Billie's hair is awful in it. Really, awful. But he has a funny walk in it. Sorry for over-analyzing the video and Billie. A "credit report" is like a financial statement, it can be anything from a credit card balance to a credit score...we all tend to just buy buy buy and then we end up in debt up to our eyeballs! As for "duty call," that expression is often used in a military sense (like you're called to serve), but tbh what Billie means by this line has always confused me. I never really understood it either. "Macy's Day Parade" refers to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. It's become a Thanksgiving tradition in America with all of the huge floats going down the streets (such as Sesame Street, SpongeBob, etc), and it was basically started as a means to advertise the Macy's department store chain. It's become so synonymous with Thanksgiving that people often refer to it as the "Macy's Day Parade" and not a Thanksgiving Day Parade. As in, this isn't Thanksgiving, but a day to celebrate a department store. It's a pretty good sign of consumerism, so I think that's why Billie used the title.
EuropeanIdiot Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I Macy's Day Parade so much it's awful. I could have it on repeat for the whole day. I don't exactly know why, but my absolute fave part is: "Then I realized what it took To tell the difference between Thieves and crooks - A lesson learned to me and you." Maybe it's the way Billie sings it...

I think I might have an idea what he could mean with that duty call. It's very silly though xD maybe something like that you're called to go shop and consume, which then also takes back on credit report. just my silly insignificant 2 cents

And actually Sanne, I think that makes a lot of sense. In America, and especially during this time of year (I don't know if you're familiar with Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving here, stores open way early and people line up outside of stores and go nuts for deals...Thanksgiving kind of takes a backseat to Black Friday these days), it is kind of a call of duty to shop and, to quote "Fashion Victim", watch your credit card explode.
Princess Consuela Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 My dictionary says 'duty call' is something like a visit you pay only because you feel it's appropriate. I don't know how to explain but it has nothing to do with military... Is such a meaning even correct? Not necessary in the song.
RobyRoom Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 And the video is terrible. Am I the only one who loves the video? It's classy and Billie has some acting skillz imo. He owns at making that sad expression
Bubbles. Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I love this song so much ...So beautiful, I love the lyrics to it too, I feel like I can relate to it so much And Billie's voice is so beautiful... as always, of course

One of the things I love about these "songs of the week" is getting new insight. The title of this song always bugged me, it's the "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade" not the "Macy's Day Parade". This explanation above makes the title make so much more sense. It's actually very clever!
Miss Hedgie Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I remember first listening to this on International superhits! Its such a beautiful song. It captures sadness and hope all in one go. It reminds me of a struggle and getting through it that there is always some form of hope out there. I think I lost a lung screaming when Billie started playing this at Wembley.
J'net Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 My dictionary says 'duty call' is something like a visit you pay only because you feel it's appropriate. I don't know how to explain but it has nothing to do with military... Is such a meaning even correct? Not necessary in the song. Yes, there are many ways to interpret "duty call" but it definitely relates to feeling you need to take some action. This action is something you do because you feel it's appropriate or it's your responsibility to do it. Also, the phrase "report for duty" probably started as a military phrase but can now be used for anything where you're expected to show up and fulfill your responsibility. When I first heard this song, it took me a while to get how the first few lines fit together. Then I pictured Billie watching television: Today's the Macy's Day Parade (he's watching it on TV). The Night of the Living Dead is on its way (it's the next thing scheduled on TV - maybe he sees an ad for it). With the credit report for duty call (I definitely see ads showing and blurring together because they're all using such similar phrases and subliminal messages). There are lots more advertising phrases scattered throughout this song, and I thought it was SO ironic when I watched the video to see an ad playing in front of the music vid. Then, almost the last phrase in the ad was "Satisfaction Guaranteed!" Just a few thoughts - there are SO many thoughts that come to me every time I hear this song. It's rich with imagery! And cherylr, I agree with your thoughts about gaining new insight into the songs every week. I love reading everyone's comments and having even MORE thoughts sparked off in my brain.
Princess Consuela Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 ^ ^Thank you J'net! I always enjoy reading your and other people's thoughts because they really help me understand Billie's lyrics more and give me 'oh right, that's what it's about!' moments I have many questions about GD songs but a) don't want to bother people with them, b) most of them seem to be silly

It's actually very clever! Oh no, I was seriously the same way until about, hmm, March? I always loved the song, but hated the title, like you did. And then I was REALLY listening to the song intently one day, and it basically hit me over the head once I figured it out. It really is a great way to introduce the song and prove a point. ^ ^Thank you J'net! Because I know I have some questions too.
Princess Consuela Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I think we need to make this an ongoing thread, a "What the fuck is Billie talking about?" thread! Because I know I have some questions too. Haha I think many people could use such thread
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Haha I'd use it for sure. although I think it'd help as well if I started looking up the words I don't know

J'net Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 Haha I'd use it for sure. although I think it'd help as well if I started looking up the words I don't know Well, as we work through the songs of the week, we'll eventually have a thread for every song .
Bohemian+Scandal Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I LOVE this song. I nearly died when Billie Joe played it in Los Angeles. I was seriously holding out hope that he would and he did! Geez, why is Warning such an amazing album?
Princess Consuela Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 OK so I have questions about those bold ones 'Stuffed in a coffin 10% more free Red light special at the mausoleum' What does the first one mean? And is the second one reference to an TLC song or is it reference to something else? I'm sorry if those two are obvious, but then again, for me as non-English speaker they are not
