valentinesandcigs Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 i saw his review for she earlier this morning i think he describes the song perfectly.the only problem i have is that he says theres not really any memorable lines in the song i disagree: are you locked up in a world thats been planned out for you? are you feeling like a social tool with out a use? Thats probably my favorite line off Dookie i like the review just that minor criticism
LetItBeHappy Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Before I begin, is anyone going to argue that “Basket Case” (...) isn’t one of the best songs on Dookie? Because if you are, you are objectively wrong and you suck and I hate you.that made me lol. I like how this guy writes, I can understand him and has good taste
Little Girl Little One Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Thanks! I was wondering if the guy completely forgot about All About Dookie...lolHaha, so did I! The Basket Case one has actually been there practically two weeks, I just kind of expected someone else to post it lol. I've had She stuck in my head all day though, so for some reason that made me think of being the one to do it.
Supermodel*Robot Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 that made me lol. I like how this guy writes, I can understand him and has good taste Haha, it's pretty funny. But I mean, I can honestly say I like a lot of Dookie more than Basket Case. It's a great song, but it just doesn't do what a song like She or Longview or even Having a blast does.
Katarina. Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 They have the one for Basket Case!http://www.popmatters.com/pm/post/117953-g...kie-basket-caseAND the one for She!http://www.popmatters.com/pm/post/118198-g...out-dookie-she/Oh, nice! I forgot about this after I read the one about Pulling Teeth..
jm_xd Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 thanks for posting! i really enjoy reading those. can't wait for the next reviews =)
Mar Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Sounding almost as if he’s mere inches away from the listener, Armstrong tenderly paints the scenario of a girl unsatisfied with the predetermined life she’s trapped in. With a “sullen riot penetrating through her mind”, this girl is “waiting for a sign” (i.e. him) that will impel her to break through her silent suffering “with a brick of self-control”.Living up to the punk genre’s standard expectations, once Armstrong’s guitar joins the fray he forsakes anything fancy for the simplicity of three barre chords (a fourth fleetingly appears in the chorus), delivering them with a passionate attack that would have been less effective he had relied on single note licks. During the choruses, Armstrong switches his lyrical perspective to talk to the subject of the song directly, achingly asking her, “Are locked up in a world that’s been planned out for you? / Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?” Interestingly, Armstrong doesn’t cast himself as a knight in shining armor coming to rescue his love. Instead, he offers to bear the weight of her world on his shoulders, telling her, “Scream at me / Until my ears bleed / I’ll take it in just for you”.I totally agree with this part. It really does feel like he's right in the room with you, which is another reason, I think the song is so relatable.
**She** Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I am glad to see that the latest reviews are as good as the first ones!
Supermodel*Robot Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I never really thought of She as a song about Billie yearning for someone. I always just see it as him being there for "She", but without romantic intentions...
LetItBeHappy Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I never really thought of She as a song about Billie yearning for someone. I always just see it as him being there for "She", but without romantic intentions...exactly.. or she and he were something, but they're not anymore, and he's gonna be there for her anyways.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I like his reviews, and I think he picked it up again with Basket Case and She (it was kind of starting to go down Pulling Teeth, but I like the two new ones), but it annoys me that he gets a lyric wrong so often.I never really thought of She as a song about Billie yearning for someone. I always just see it as him being there for "She", but without romantic intentions...yeah, exactly.
Mar Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 exactly.. or she and he were something, but they're not anymore, and he's gonna be there for her anyways. That's really how I see it.
Supermodel*Robot Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 exactly.. or she and he were something, but they're not anymore, and he's gonna be there for her anyways.that's so strange. I never ever ever though about it romantically. I think that's why it connected with me so much. It's like..you don't have to be the girl I'm in love with or infatuated with, for me to care enough to be here for you. You're worth it anyways. I get the same feel out of "One for the Razorbacks"

I get the same feel out of "One for the Razorbacks"Yeah, that's how I look at it as well. Not really for One for the Razorbacks though, but that's mainly because I never really put thought into the (this is gonna sound awkward) relationship between Billie and Juliet in that song.

I get the same feel out of "One for the Razorbacks"one for the razorbacks sounds like "oh, Juliet, I know I've just met you, but I don't care: I want you to know that I'll be here for you". That's why that song is so great
Supermodel*Robot Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Yeah, that's how I look at it as well. Not really for One for the Razorbacks though, but that's mainly because I never really put thought into the (this is gonna sound awkward) relationship between Billie and Juliet in that song."open up your worried world and let me in" = "scream at me until my ears bleed"
LetItBeHappy Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 "open up your worried world and let me in" = "scream at me until my ears bleed"sometimes I wonder if it is the same person.
darenmay Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 i like this guy's reviews but that of pulling teeth.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 "open up your worried world and let me in" = "scream at me until my ears bleed"Wow, I never put that connection. That's kind of cool. Both the songs have sort of the same spirit, I never really realized that. But I still think of One for the Razorbacks more as a 'love song'. "Well look this direction, I know it's not perfection, it's just me" (but then "I want to bring up up again now" sounds more of a friends thing). it kind of switches between a friend and a love thing throughout the song. I guess you could interpret it both ways.
Katarina. Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 one for the razorbacks sounds like "oh, Juliet, I know I've just met you, but I don't care: I want you to know that I'll be here for you". That's why that song is so great Exactly And I like his review of She.
Little Girl Little One Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Here's the one for Sassafras Roots:http://www.popmatters.com/pm/post/118218-g...assafras-roots/This one is SUPER short, but I guess it is a short song and repeats itself a bit lol.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Haha, that was short indeed.I think I like it...
LetItBeHappy Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Here's the one for Sassafras Roots:http://www.popmatters.com/pm/post/118218-g...assafras-roots/This one is SUPER short, but I guess it is a short song and repeats itself a bit lol.thanks for posting here, I always forgot to check popmatters once in a while.did i tell you that i love your sig? xDAnd... I'm not a huge fan of this song, and I think this guy isn't a fan either, because he kept it as short as he could I really like how he talks about the narrator's intentions and all
