Such a lovely happy song! I love the simple, sweet sentiment of it, it could cheer me up any day. Well I say simple but I think you have to be a brilliant lyricist and songwriter to convey a message so effectively in such a universal, catchy way and in so few words.

Almost every time I hear the song, though, I remember reading this quote from Tre about it and it kind of gives me a new perspective on it  :

"That's like a good song to make out with your boyfriend to, or your girlfriend, whatever. Who ever you like to make out with. It's a good song to get all bubbly, tickly, naked...it's a nice song."

I like that quote! :D

Awh I love this song. I remember the first time I heard it my sister took me to some fancy salon to get my hair done and I hated it so much and I started crying in a car. We went and she bought me this CD right after and this song made me so happy. I think it made me forget about my hair for awhile haha :)

It's a great song. And I love the parts in the video where Tré Cool films under Billie Joe's pants. Is this film material anywhere on youtube? :D And who has ever put poprocks in his coke?

I'm going to say this song sucks...

I absolutely hate it....

Just kidding of course, I love every Green Day song. Each for different reasons.

my international superhits is being held hostage on a computer (on my old itunes) that is no longer functioning. i need to get this song again cause it makes me so dang warm and fuzzy. when i was much much younger my friends and i would make mix tapes (dating myself) for each other...this would be a perfect song to go on one.

I really don't think Poprocks and Coke is really that good.

Don't get me wrong... I know we all love it because it is Green Day. I loved it when it first came out too and still do. But I feel to say it is 'amazing' is giving in a bit too much credit. GD have released some brilliant and influential songs (Basketcase, Longview, Good Riddance and American Idiot just to name a few) and I don't believe Poprocks and Coke has any right being thought of as highly as such classics.

Yes, it is by my favourite band and I enjoy it, but that does not take away from the fact it is a very basic song that is not dissimilar to many other pop songs in terms of lyrics, structure and melody.

Just my 2c worth...

Edit: Incase I didn't state clearly enough, I do think Poprocks and Coke is a good song. Not an amazing song or an influential song or a song that really pushed the boundaries, just a good song. And there is nothing wrong with that.

You said nicely what I think I was getting at in my brief post earlier. It's not like I skip this one whenever the iPod coughs it up, it *is* a nice song, but that's "it". It's pleasant to listen to but just doesn't grab at me the way most of Green Day's other work does.

I think I understand what you mean, and I also think a song can be amazing in a number of ways. Sometimes, it may not be amazing in any sense that can be really be critiqued but can still be amazing in the feelings it causes people to have. I think this is one of those songs. I do think the song as a whole is quite nice and has some lovely features, but what really makes this song special for me is the very positive feeling I get when I hear it. Few songs give me such a warm fuzzy. I think it's a combination of the simple lyrics and the overall feel of the music. But that's amazing in a very personal way - not something that can really be brought out in an objective critique.

Well put.... still, I find that songs like 2000LYA, Last Night on Earth, Redundant, Good Riddance, Drama Queen (

they'd better f*cking release this one as a B-side!!!

), etc. etc. etc. generate a much deeper emotional pull for me than Poprocks does. Just my own opinion of it though -- while I don't find it working for me the way it seems to for other folks, I wholeheartedly support anyone's/everyone's right to thoroughly enjoy it! :)

I completely agree with everything you've said here. But there are times when the warm fuzzy of Poprocks is more what I need than the deep emotional pull of the others. There's no doubt that one of the reasons I've listened to Green Day with such joy for so many years is the variety of mood they provide with their songs. They've got something for every occasion. And it's all good. But not every song is as GREAT as every other song. I would never compare Poprocks to JoS - there's this old "apples and oranges" saying that would fit well here :).

I can drink to that! :)

The thing I love best about this song right now is the kind of discussion it's inspired here. Instead of everyone just saying, "I love this song," we've had a little more in depth conversation :). It kind of makes me sad that I'm about to unpin this one and put the new one up ... maybe we can continue the trend, though!

And P.S. I'm already drinking to that :D.
