'Woah, Christian's Inferno' over and over again grates on me and 'I text a postcard to you, did it go through ?' - If you really love someone, wouldn't you ring them ?

Some of the lyrics on 21CB are a bit overblown for my taste.

I hate the 'woah Christina's inferno' line too.

Some people really are being rude. There's no need to say a lyric makes you cringe, I really highly doubt that. I exaggerate too, but that's quite extreme.

No, I actually cringe at the lines in Extraordinary Girl. Or else have a mind-shudder. I'm not being mean, it's just the truth. I have the same thing happen when I read my own writing sometimes. It's just an "oh wow, that sounds so off" moment.

I don't think we need to worry about bruising Billie's ego. If you can't see any flaws in them, then there's something wrong. I hate the "Green Day can do no wrong" mentality. All humans are flawed & can't be perfect all the time. Even the best writers produce crap, it's just the way it goes.

The line "When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul" bothers me. It just seems so redundant.

Really? I love that line. It shows how we over-think things and let our minds overtake our emotions which causes massive anxiety & pressure in our lives.

I don't think it's so much an attitude that Green Day are perfect and can do no wrong. It's just that music and lyrics are never going to be written exactly to one person's taste - they're not written to impress, they're written as an honest expression of the writer's thoughts and feelings. So all we can do is listen and enjoy the parts we enjoy.

If there happens to be a line that doesn't appeal to you then fine, but I don't think that makes it "crap". "Crap" would be if the line wasn't written with honesty and didn't come from the heart. When we're talking about a song full of brilliant lyrics and saying one line amongst them is "bad" just because you don't happen to like the turn of phrase it just seems...pointless. Why nit pick when Billie's just poured his heart out for us and there's so much to enjoy!

I don't have that mentality. They do some things wrong, like show up drunk at awards' shows and make lame-ass jokes that fall flat. But I happen to just love Billie's lyrics, they've never annoyed me, they move me like nothing else. My OWN writing can tick me off, but that's because I'm hyper-self-critical.

This is how I feel. Thank you for expressing it so eloquently.

21 Guns is the only one I can think of that bugs me sometimes. Some of those lyrics are just..meh. I love the song, but sometimes it comes off being bland. The first two verses, mainly. I don't know.

This is one thing I've never thought about.

Maybe because this is a forum where we discuss things. Not every thread has to be about praising everything Green Day does because we all know they are an amazing band. That's why most of us are part of this forum.

Personally, I think it's okay to have a thread just talking about our least favourite lyrics in songs. Some people might really think certain lyrics are off and just not like them. I see nit picking as analysing and I don't think that undermines Billie's songwriting. It gets boring when every thread is about how wonderful everything Green Day does is. It's refreshing to hear different perspectives. I hope I'm not sounding bitchy or anything, I don't mean it like that at all.

I agree. I really have nothing against the song but some of the lyrics feel almost like sing-song-rhyme-y cop outs. I am not sure I could say which ones exactly bother me, I think it is more the combinations of multiple lines...I don't really know either...

The only lyrics that bug me are the one's that make me somewhat sad because I wish I could relate.

Like someone said earlier,

"From another place in time, where my family's from"

I think I didn't express myself clearly. I'm not saying anything he wrote is crap, I'm just saying that there are specific lines that feel awkward or don't connect with me. Obviously it's a personal opinion & other people may love the lyrics I dislike. I just don't think people should be upset that we're analyzing lyrics. It's not mean to criticize, it's natural. This thread is actually helping me understand some ideas a lot more, which makes me appreciate the songs even more.

I was quite suprised reading this thread.

OMG OMG OMG

I cannot believe I've found someone who thinks this.

I HATE when people say "I could care less" and I'm like nnoooooooo you couldn't!!! you couldn't care less.

Haha, but other than this I can't think of a least favorite line or anything. Sometimes there'll be lines that I'll feel dislike towards but only because I wish he didn't feel that way.

If I think of something else, I'll post it.

I never looked up lyrics for that song, so I always assumed he was saying "And I couldn't really care less."

I don't get people who don't like lines because they don't apply to them, like the "Where my family's from" line. Not every single song lyric can apply to you, and if it doesn't, it doesn't make it a bad lyric. There are plenty of songs that don't apply to me but I still love them. I think if we all related to every single one of Billie's lyrics we'd be a bit of a mess!

Exactly.

There's a bunch of Green Day lyrics that I don't relate to/fully understand, but I wouldn't dislike the words purely because of that.

'You Lied'

The more I listen to this song the more I'm amazed on how Billie pronunciation of "Pinocchio" is good

I actually love the lyrics, and btw I 'm sure the correct line is "Pinocchio has pierced your tongue" so I'm not surprised Nick didn't find it (on Google)

Haha there is something about th way he pronounces it

I like the lyric becuase it allows Pinocchio to be connected with the subject's tongue, so the part of him/her that would actually be "physically" speaking the lie. I think it ties in nicely with the following line about the noes growing (also a referene to Pinocchio). It just ties together for me.

Riiight, I didn't notice the mistake. That's a weird line btw :D

Exactly. The song is surprisingly coherent

I'm italian, Pinocchio is an italian novel, and I think that Billie's pronunciation is really similar to the original one
