Hermione Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I'm a huge fan of Billie's lyrics and I've got an immeasurable amount of enjoyment from them. I suppose if I was to choose my least favourite it would have to be some of the slightly cringy ones from the early days, maybe "hey old man in woman's shoes I wonder if he knows I think he's crazy? When he was young did he have dreams of wearing woman's shoes and being crazy?" But the fact is I enjoy them too - they're still written with such conviction and they're always on the quirky side rather than the boring side. I don't care if some of them are a bit corny or dodgy, the honesty of Green Day's lyrics mean they surpass everything else for me, no other band comes close.I don't get how some people are giving a lyric and saying they dislike it for no other reason than they don't understand what it means. Not understanding a lyric straight away makes thinking about the meaning all the more interesting! I love that Billie's lyrics can be subtle in their meanings or open to interpretation.
dolce Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 i hate the backing lyrics behind the 'lost like refugees' line.OMG, that is THE MOST (and probably the only) annoying part in a Green Day song. It's not even lyrics, it's just like "do-da-diddy" or something like that, but it drives me nuts. Glad I'm not the only one. I agree that I don't really understand the "I text a postcard sent to you, did it go through" bit in LNOE. I only reason I don't care for it is it doesn't make sense to text a postcard... also the bit about "I'm here to honor you". I don't get that, really. I don't really think about honoring those who are still alive. I suppose he means like to worship or respect, which is very sweet, but... IDK. It makes sense but it takes a while to think of the word in that way. Those are just little things though. Nothing major.
Nzap Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 "when your dancing through your wardrobe,Do the anorex a gogo."Or something like that.I use to sing something else that I come up with during those lines of Fashion Victim.I understand the meaning of the lyrics and they should based on all theory fit perfectly in the song but they just don't.
Juliette Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Thing is though, the outstanding lyrics outweigh the slightly dodgy ones by far, so I think he's allowed to write a load of crap from time to time
Dylan. Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I got the one that pwns all these sucky lyrics. "My mental stability reaches it's bitter end" from Private Ale. WORST EVER!!!!!And btw, The Static Age probably owns every song by them ever when it comes to amazing lyrics.

Smoothed Out Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Brain Stew "My eyes feel like they're gonna bleed, dried up and bulging out my skull" Always give me a pretty gross picture in my head :/

"The static age" is amazing, though I'm unsure on some lines meaning."Batteries are not included" is my favorite line
catarina. Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Brain Stew "My eyes feel like they're gonna bleed, dried up and bulging out my skull" Always give me a pretty gross picture in my head :/this.just the mental image makes me wanna puke. kinda disgusting really.
Mari91 Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I know, right? Even if I do translate words or expressions I don't know, it's just impossible to get everything in 100%. I feel I'm missing something, as I will never understand Billie's lyrics like native English speakers. And I'm not talking about the general meaning, it's just those double meanings, puns, etc. I like finding out new things in songs I know so well, though haha i usually have a hard time understanding Billie too! and English is my native tongue! Most of the lyrics from the Sweet Children EP (besides My Generation of course). It's not that I don't like them but they're just a little strange...have to agree with this :/ I'm with you. "The static age" is amazing, though I'm unsure on some lines meaning."Batteries are not included" is my favorite line I LOVE THE LINE ALSO!!!and whats with all the hate with 1000 hours? i love it, no matter how corny
Freeny Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 OMG, that is THE MOST (and probably the only) annoying part in a Green Day song. It's not even lyrics, it's just like "do-da-diddy" or something like that, but it drives me nuts. Glad I'm not the only one. oh my god... I've never noticed that before! I listened to it now just to hear it and I'm laughing my ass off!
Princess Consuela Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I don't understand why everyone hates 1000 hours lyrics suddenly I've always thought it was very sweet of Billie to write something like that. And it applies to most of songs from 1039. It always makes me smile when I think of teenage Billie I really dislike "like a dog that's been sodomised." There's no need for that.As much as I love EJN lyrics, this particular line makes me cringe. Maybe because of one terrible story I've heard including dog actually being sodomised Just gross.
Spizz Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 "like cigarettes and coffee with the underbelly" i don't know, i just hate that linelove the song, hate that lyric
Tiffx Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 'My mental stability reaches its bitter end' is from 80 I love that line. Also with the whole 'I text a postcard' isn't that a double meaning? I think it's supposed to be ironic.
Juliette Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 1039 is just an album of cheesey love songs. It's what most teenagers write about so I don't really see anything wrong with the lyrics being corny.
MascaraTears Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 the only song I can think of is the chorus of Shoplifter... I mean come on. "It's not considered stealing unless you're getting caught. But you've been caught stealing, trying to take something you haven't got". just seems kinda pointless... but billie writes so many amazing lyrics that it's not fair to criticize him too harshly for a stupid line here and there.
Just Overjoyed Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Not a big fan of the song Geek Stink Breath.Which is especially unfortunate because its sandwiched between 2 of my faves on both Insomniac and International Superhits...Its literally like the only song of theirs I don't like."Well Don't know what I want butThat's all I've gotAnd I'm picking scabs off my face"He just like, growls out these lyrics. They're well written, about his drug issues, but meh. Just not my song.

Do you GROOM'S NAME take BRIDE'S NAME to be your wife – to live together after God’s ordinance – in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, for better, for worse, in sadness and in joy, to cherish and continually bestow upon her your heart’s deepest devotion, forsaking all others, keep yourself only unto her as long as you both shall live?its part of the traditional words spoken by a minister at a wedding and something your supposed to do when you get married. honor your wife. and billie said this was a love song for adrienne. his wife.
HoneyDo666 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 So if I ask you what "tragic al'a madness and concrete" means you can't answer?I like this line but I'm pretty usure on the meaning It means we're just surrounded by concrete buildings and paranoia. We live in the "Modern World." A la is French for "in the style of." He's saying, I think, that it's pretty tragic right now to live in the "Modern World."I love that lyric.I had to look up CDs to figure out that acronym. Fail. Good job I started with 21CB I really dislike "like a dog that's been sodomised." There's no need for that. And also the "lost like refugees" line because I don't think you can compare anything to the experience of a refugee.Yes, there is a need for it. It shows how powerless religious fanatics are. They just let the ideology own them and don't think for themselves. A sodomized/tortured dog is pretty damn evocative of powerlessness.
leacalifornia Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 "Well Don't know what I want butThat's all I've gotAnd I'm picking scabs off my face"He just like, growls out these lyrics. They're well written, about his drug issues, but meh. Just not my song.yes.. the "picking scabs off my face" isnt a very pleasent scene to think about... haha!but neither is the title geek stink breath.

I got the general meaning, but now it has even a grammatical sense
