BraedonHorbacio Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 I like the jaded in chicago performance best.
Michael128 Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 I really hate to post this here, but I'm not sure where else I can and I don't wanna start a whole new thread for this. Is there a place to ask these kinds of questions? Anyways, I was just wondering if All By Myself sampled another song cause I was listening to it and then paused it for a second and the guitar on the song that was playing on the car radio sounded identical. I can't find it on google and the stations website doesn't have a playlist. Sorry, again.
Michael128 Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 So apparently I was looking at the wrong site. I found it so you can ignore this. And it wouldn't let me edit my old post.
alaniluau Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Paper Lanterns has always been one of my very favorite old skool GD songs. I NEED to hear it live eventually. I think everyone can relate to the situation described. Excellent choice for SOTW!
DistilledxSpirits Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 I like the jaded in chicago performance best. The solo is golden!Everytime I watch it I shake my head muttering "My, my Billie Joe, you are fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked!" I like the acoustic version as well. It's very pretty.
bjrules Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 I loooooove this song definitely one of the best off 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. I really want to hear this one live.
The Disappearing Boy Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 good song. did they ever play this on this tour?
J'net Posted November 10, 2009 Author Posted November 10, 2009 I love how honest & simple the lyrics were in 1039. It was just pure teenage confusion & infatuation. It's a nice thing to have when you're going through the same things. This song is just really pure & that's what makes it so incredible. I also love the really simple solos Billie used to write during the 1039/Kerplunk! days. They're starting to creep back in a bit now, but that's one thing that held some of those songs above others that came after.I really agree with this, and what especially sets these songs apart is that most teenagers - when they're suffering that confusion and infatuation - can't put their feelings into such universally identifiable language. They just choke up and speak in what sounds like cliches - when it's really heartfelt emotion. As a matter of fact, most grown up old people have the same problem! But Billie has a way of taking those emotions and putting them into song lyrics without sounding like he's being overly dramatic. I think that's one reason why so many people of different ages and backgrounds identify with so much of Green Day's music.
Abbey. Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 In GIMME SOMETHING BETTER (really fun read) Billie Joe talks about playing songs like Paper Lanters cause that's the kind of stuff that was on their minds...NWWM recently posted a quote from the book....Billie Joe: “A lot of our songs were about girls. When it comes from a 17-year-old kid, the songs are just gushing. It drew a lot of girls. It was weird. We got a lot of shit from other bands because we had love songs. But I wanted to sing about truth and where I’m at, my relationships with people. Or lack thereof. We would play Santa Rosa or Petaluma, and tons of girls would show up. They started showing up at Gilman, it would be 75 percent women. It almost feels funny to say, but we never took liberties or anything like that.”NWWM link
Maddy. Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 [..] It drew a lot of girls. It was weird. [..]I read that as "I drew a lot of girls." and thought, oh billie you naughty boy...
Ally Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 I'm listening to it now for maybe the 4th time, and falling in love with it. I've always liked it but never really listened to it, only when it came up in shuffle on my iPod.i was like that too, love it now
Metanoia Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 not one of their best songs but i love it though =)
Alan86 Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 In the first Video, Billie aand Mike are standing on the wrong sides,Im so used to seeing them the other way around.
St. Banana Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 excellenttt i love 1039/SOSH. favourite album
Kleptomaniac Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Classic.I want some paper lanterns to hang from my ceilings actually. (random)
JakeThompson Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I'm ...or was... attempting to write a novel for a thing called NaNoWriMo. I didn't know what to call it since I've been making it up as I write it. When I was looking for a title generator online, I was listening to my Green Day collection on shuffle and Paper Lanterns came on. I though... wait a minute. That's a pretty solid name. So it's the working title for my novel that will probably never get finished, lol. If I do finish it, I may just keep the title. If anyone has any interest, you can read what I've got so far on my blog. So far nothing in the story has anything to do with the title, the song, or Green Day... but I may write something in there to make things relate a little bit better. I know this post has had virtually nothing to do with the song, but I just thought I'd mention it.I really like the song, and the album it's from. Good choice!
E!!i Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I have a question: Who does vote the songs of the week?
J'net Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 I have a question: Who does vote the songs of the week?In the original post for this thread, there's a link to the Song of the Week nominations thread. I keep track of how many nominations (or votes) each song gets. Then I choose the song of the week based on several criteria (including number of votes). I've explained earlier in this thread how I do that, so I'm not going to repeat it here. But I essentially try to please as many people as possible while making sure we have some variety and don't get too focused on one album.
04rebhop Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Great song choice for song of the week. In my opinion this is the best song on SOSH. I love their performance of it at Woodstock best. It was this song that got me into liking SOSH, as the lyrics are just amazing, and i just love the bass in this song.
Alex. Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 I love this song so much, and at the moment I can really relate to it.
