This sounds amazing and would be so much fun if it works out. I live in Atlanta, Ga but I can easily get to Savannah so let me know :)

I live in Hollywood, FL but if anything my mom would rather die first before letting me go. Sorry, I'm too young.

EDIT: But it's still an epic idea.

I'm really glad everyone is liking the idea so far. I really hope to make this happen, you guys! I will continue to do my research and I hope you guys keep giving feedback. Any traveling or road tripping tips or even stories is appreciated.

Haha, will do. Made me think of 'Walking Contradiction'

"Losers winning big on the lottery..."

Not that you're a loser.

I think you might be confused. This idea started from me wanting to get out to see the free show on the 23rd, but since I can't do that, I thought it would be cool to do a road trip to the area where Green Day formed. I don't know when this trip will happen, but I'm sure it's a couple years down the road, since there's still lots of planning and saving up money involved.

actually, flights from scotland to america (florida in particular) are pretty cheap. now that im working, if we are talking a couple of years down the road ........... definatley count me in!!! ive always wanted to go on an american road trip, a green day one would be awsome :D

My son & one of his friends are doing the NY to CA trip w/ my van next February but that trip is to see Haight-Ashbury & sights along the way.

sounds like an awesome idea :) Good luck with it

Thanks.

So my dad brought up a good point. With the route that Google Maps first showed, we would be going through a lot of the deep south. That just is not a good idea. So we'll probably go a bit farther north before going out west.

That does sound like an awesome idea. But I'm in Northern Ohio and those places you mentioned you were stopping are way too far away for me to get down there.

I think it's a great idea.

I'm in New Orleans. XD would that be too out of the way?

I dunno if I'd be able to actually go though =/

Alright so last night, through a discussion on Twitter with Kerrie (@eerienite or Kleptomaniac here on the GDC), this glorious idea was born. It started with me talking about how I just needed about $700 to fly out to California for that free show on the 23rd. I have family in Thousand Oaks, CA so all I'd need to worry about is the airfare. Well since this idea was more of a pipe dream than practical, I started thinking about something else.

What if I bought a used van through Craigslist or something, picked up some local east coast Green Day fans, and took a road trip out to Berkley, CA? Google Maps said it would take about a day and 20 hours from my home address to Gilman itself. I'm thinking I could get a van here, then go to a few states on this coast to pick up some fans (especially from the GDC) then heading out west. We could even go have a group lunch at Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe. Since this trip would be totally unofficial or "independent" I think it would be cool to promote the GDA/GDC along the way. I'm thinking an awesome paint job on the van, as well as like getting a bunch of bumper stickers and stuff to pass out along the way. I'm not trying to ask for a sponsorship from the GDA or anything like that. Just want to represent :)

I'm dead serious about doing this trip. I think it would be some of the best times I, and anyone who participates, will have. I know that there needs to be a LOT more planning and even more saving involved. I start work in February, so I'll probably be saving up for at least two years. I don't like asking people for money, so I'm not sure how much a seat in the van should cost for gas, etc. I know there are some awesome people here who I hope want to collaborate and help plan this thing. I realize that we all have lives full of responsibilities and this may kind of seem like a far-fetched idea, but I think we could make it happen... someday. So what do you guys think?

EDIT: The title of this thread was supposed to be "The GDA Green Day Roots Tour of 20??"

I wish I could go, this sounds like so much fucking fun :( Im from RI unfortuantly :( I would seriously do this in a friggin heartbeat but im so far away, but i am saving all my money for all these shows!!!!!

I'm not sure of what the final route we'll take. So once I figure that out, I'll let you know. I think the first part of the trip will depend on who all for sure will be able to go. Which I know that's hard to know if you're are for sure to go, since there is no real dates for this trip yet. At the very earliest, I'd say maybe 2 years from now, but probably more like 3 or 4.

Fuck how I wish I could do this!

Contact Zoe on here, I'm sure she'd be so fucking down! I think she lives somewhere close to one of your stops. She's close to Seattle I think? I know she was desperate for a ride down to the show! She's Shangri-La on here :)

I hope you get people for this! It's so fucking badass. I demand pictures for every little detail.

EDIT: Ahhh, I thought you were talking about the free show coming up :/

Perhaps I'll be able to make it down to one of the stops if this isn't going to be happening for a while!

LOL, yes, I want to make it clear that this is NOT for the free show coming up. The free show has a limited number of tickets which I think have all been "sold out". So even if I was able to head out to LA for the show, I most likely wouldn't be able to even get in.

What I'm talking about is a road trip to Green Day's stomping grounds. Going to see some (NON-GREEN DAY) shows at 924 Gilman, going to E 12th St. or Stuart and the Ave...etc. I would like to make other sight seeing stops along the way, as well. But the main focus is to check out all the places Green Day grew up, and provided inspiration for songs and such.

This idea is fucking genius. I love the idea of painting the van all GDC. Sadly my parents would never in a million years let me join something like this, but stick with it man. It would be fun just to hear about you guys doing it.

Yeah, I was thinking of like painting the name of whatever this trip would be called. I don't think "The GDA Green Day Roots Tour" will be the final name. Perhaps The Sassafras Roots Tour or something.... lol. But whatever the final name would be, have it painted in the early album art style, like Kerplunk or 39/Smooth. But also feature some sort of representation of all the other albums all over the rest of the van. I'm gonna start messing around in photoshop once this idea/plan becomes a little more solid.
