amy_runs Posted November 27, 2009 Posted November 27, 2009 Green Day New Years Eve with Carson Daly at Nokia Plaza ~When I heard about this show, I flipped. I needed tickets. Nao.Tickets were only available through this certain site called 1iota, and I was familiar with it (when I saw Green Day on Carson Daly in the studio <3) so I knew how to get tickets…. Kind of. This time, I had to change the age to 21 and the zip code from Burbank to Reseda. Whatever works! So I got 4 tickets, but only my father and I ended up going. The few, the proud, the die-hard.It was on Monday, November 23. I had school that day but I left at lunch, 12:30. When I got home, I changed my clothes (put my Op. Ivy shirt on for good luck and my green leopard print concert socks) and got ready for an insane night. I packed the usual trail mix and beef jerkey; the best pre and post concert food. Om nom nom.I printed out the tickets and directions, and badabing badaboom, it was time to go. We left our house at 2:00, although if I had a license and car I would have left at 5 in the morning. We arrived in LA around 3:00, but we got lost… again. The Staples Center is only visible when it wants to be. I swear, it has the gift to hide from desperate Green Day fans seeking a fix. It really does. So, we headed down Olympic Blvd into the Garment District. I can easily say I never, ever want to do that again in my life. As I nervously rolled up my window, people were staring. I thought I was going to be shot. Maybe that’s just me being ignorant, but it was not a place for a picnic. After going in a few circles, over a few buildings, and through a few restaurants, we found the Nokia, and Staples Center. Thank jeebus. And we also found a pretty close parking spot for only $20. Yes, only.We walked on over to the Nokia, and boy it was incredible! Signs all over the place read “GREEN DAY AND CARSON DALY NEW YEARS EVE SPECIAL” and I began to crap my pants. It was finally happening. We walked past the stage, which was being set up, and it was awesome! There were lights everywhere and huge screens and workers working and people staring and fans screaming as I retardedly gawked in marvel. My dad and I continued, and followed some signs that lead us to the line. The line went on and on and on! There had to be at least 200 people ahead of us. Then again, it was already 3:40, (wristbands were handed out at 4) so I wasn’t extremely surprised. I would have been closer if I had a personal method of transportation. In line, we met some pretty awesome people. This girl, Victoria, was alone most of the time until her friends came to her rescue. But until then, we had some decent conversation about our Green Day adventures… my favorite subject. Time flew by, and before we knew it, “O through Z! O through Z! Anyone’s last name begin with O through Z?” Wristbands were being handed out. YAY! They got to H eventually, and we got our guarantee inside! The wristband was black with yellow smiley faces, which happened to be my expression the whole night. As it got darker, and colder, and windier, the Christmas lights on the trees (blue lights with white awesome moving icicles that looked real) turned on and it truly began to feel like the holidays. My dad insisted on getting me my jacket from the car, but I needed my shirt to be visible. It brings me good luck and it couldn’t be covered up with a silly jacket! I could endure the cold for the greatest band on the planet. Easy as 3.14.Around 5:30, the line moved into a different line closer to the plaza. Actually, there were like 10 lines we all filed into, where we stood for about an hour. Oh, the wait was excruciating. And cold. I’m a wimp, what can I say, so my dad let me borrow his jacket for a while. It was wonderful though. Imagine being in the blizzard of the century with only a bathing suit on, while someone pours a bucket of freezing cold water onto you. Then, you get knocked down by the abominable snowman who, by chance, has another bucket of freezing cold water. He pours it on you like the monster he is. And as you writhe in intolerable pain, the sun magically comes out and butterflies roam and deer prance in the freshly moist grass. You are immediately warmed by the rays of the sun and colour flows back into your cheeks as the paleness fades away… That’s how I felt when I put the jacket on. In the midst of a joke session with my dad, all of a sudden, I heard it.The distinct sound of a guitar rang throughout the area, captivating the mind of everyone within earshot. Every head looked up, each covered in a fervent grin that stretched from ear to ear, searching for the origin of such a divine sound. My heartbeat increased drastically. The sound check had begun.Since the stage was far away from the line we were in, nobody could see Green Day in action. All we could embrace was the melody of the songs echoing throughout the streets of downtown Los Angeles. And it was nothing short of incredible. (I know the exact sound check set list because I tweeted every song played in order [/nerd])The first song played during the sound check was Maria. I have always loved this song – so much energy and pure fun. I wish it was played during the actual show!Next was Murder City. I LOVE this song on 21CB, it has to be one of the best. And hearing it live was just beautifulness.Third was a Cheap Trick cover, I Want You to Want Me. I am in love with this song and they made it even more amazing. They should do a studio version!St. Jimmy was next, and I remember during it, the line began moving into ANOTHER line (no surprise there) where we waited for about half an hour. Fifth was one of my favorite songs of all time, Coming Clean. I have always wanted to hear it live, and I finally did! I recorded the end of it onto my phone (it’s crap quality) but I don’t care because it’s live Green Day! Oh, and I was beginning to suffer from severe heart palpitations and a case of “stab me, this can’t possibly be real.”And it just kept getting better! HAVING A BLAST! Holy crap! I love this song. Well, I love every song. But this one is one of the greatest, ever.Next was Burnout! I thought they were going to play all of Dookie! I love Burnout like the sister I never had! Ah!SASSAFRAS ROOTS!!!!!! OH MY GOD! The first time it has ever been played live since it came out! And I heard it! WOOOO!!!!Nice Guys Finish Last! Billie had some trouble – okay, a lot of trouble with the lyrics, but they got through half of it! It ruled. There was a very short break, as we could hear Billie changing guitars. An acoustic one was next. Alllriiiggghhhtttt. BAM! Pulling Teeth! And mind you, this was only the sound check. So many rare songs… Practically half of Dookie. It was intensely amazing. I can’t even use words to describe it; no words are big enough that pack a powerful enough punch of meaning and emotion. So, I will leave it up to you to create such a feeling in your mind, if it’s possible. The next song made me, and everyone else in line lol major. Billie’s attempt at Stairway to Heaven turned into the Gilligan’s Island theme song. It was definitely one of the greatest parts of the night. Nobody I saw knew the next song, a b-side of American Idiot, Favorite Son. I love love love this song and I was shocked when I heard the opening chords. I thought Green Day forgot it existed!American Eulogy was next, and it’s always fantastic live. It’s usually close to the end of every set list, so I thought it was the end of the sound check. But to my surprise, it was not.Ending with a Clash cover of I fought the Law, Green Day did not disappoint! I was in a permanent state of awe, and the night had only just begun. After the band left stage (or when it sounded like they did, nobody could see them) a worker guy climbed on the fence and asked, “Can everybody hear me?” and the crowd screamed back “YES!” Awesome. He then told us not to push and shove and run, because we were all getting in the pit! YEAH! The words I had been waiting to hear for 6 hours…. Finally. To no surprise, people pushed and shoved. I can’t blame them though, I did it also! So we all filed into the pit slowly but surely, and as we walked in, there were tons of boxes filled with New Years Eve goodies: poppers, party hats, glow sticks and head bands. We were supposed to dress up because the show is going to be streamed on television on New Years Eve! So I grabbed a hat and three glowsticks (that I used as necklaces) and found a good spot in the pit. It was now 7:30 pm.By nature, I always go to the right side of the stage. I don’t know why, but it’s just a habit. I guess it’s because it’s Mike’s side (ga). We were very close actually, probably 15 feet from the stage. I counted, and I was only 5 people from the cat walk! I knew it would change once the show finally started. I was going to get closer. We lost our friends we met in line, but quickly met some new ones! I don’t remember their names, but two women were to the right of us and we talked and talked about Green Day and other topics. They were cool peeps fo’ sho’. But the people to my left need 3 separate paragraphs.Alright. So, there was a group of people directly next to me on my left who were rowdy and obviously drunk. I wasn’t surprised, being at a Green Day concert. It’s normal! But when the guy right next to me sat down on the floor, I knew something was up. I had an idea – but nah, it can’t be… Oh yes it can. I was watching him rip apart what looked like ash/leaves and placing them into a pipe. I knew it!!! He eventually stood up, and let the herb take him away.A woman behind me noticed, and demanded, “Can you please not do that here? There are people here underage.” Was she talking about me? Who knows. I was thankful for her though - until he answered back.In the creepiest voice I have ever heard in my life, he slowly turned around and said, “Why don’t you mind your own business?” Okay, woman, please don’t argue with the man. Let him do his business and please, just PLEASE do not get into a fight. I honestly thought the dude was gonna pull out a knife and start shanking everybody in his path. I was nervous. They continued arguing, until someone eventually gave up - I can’t remember who - but I was glad it was over. I just covered my mouth with my shirt whenever the wretched stench crawled into my nostrils. The guy saw me doing that, and he turned to his friends and said “We’ve got a smeller.” Wtf does that mean? I was ready to pop him one. Although I didn’t because I had to see Green Day perform first. Maybe after the show. I tried to forget about the whole shindig, when I was looking around on stage and Joey Armstrong caught my eye. That boy is the definition of adorable. A perfect mix of his beautiful father and mother… he is surely something from the heavens. I stared. I drooled. He left. I cried. Not really. But I wanted to.Around 9 pm, some host guy, let’s call him… Chuck, came out and talked to us. He welcomed us and blah blah blah. He also made us count down from 20. I’m guessing for when the ball drops? We’ll find out on December 31st. But anyway, Chuck was like “I need you guys to count down from 20. I don’t know what’s going to happen afterwards, but we’re going to find out.” It was so much fun! We started, and began counting faster and faster and louder and louder until the place erupted in screaming and cheering. Unfortunately, some other dude came out saying we counted too fast. So the next time, we had to count down from 30, while following his hand motion for every second. This time was even more intense as we got super extremely loud until I couldn’t hear myself counting. Flipping awesome, it was. After 1, we all cheered and jumped up and down and threw our hands in the air celebrating the not-so-new year. The Green Day pre-show set list began to play, and I knew it was getting close! People began trying to get through us, saying things like “Oh, we’re short and we need to get to the front!” But my dad was ready for some ass whoopin’. One guy in particular wanted to get through and he was dead set on doing so. Using lame excuses, he tried to push his scrawny little body to the front but the people around me wouldn’t let him. The ‘conversation’ with him got heated. (It went something like this)Him: Hey I need to get through!Dad: You’re not going anywhere, buddy.Him: Excuse me? You’re like old enough to be my dad.Dad: Yeah, and I’m old enough to spank your whiney ass. (BURN!)Him: Woah! (some lame comeback)And it went on a little more, but he eventually left. The quotes aren’t exact but I think I’m pretty close. It was full of such awesome pwnage. The Chuck guy finished up his speech thing (or whatever he was doing) and we waited some more. The pre-show set list was coming to an end, as the Michael Jackson song came on, followed by the YMCA, and followed by Do You Remember Rock ‘N Roll Radio. People were getting excited. Green Day was supposed to come out at 9, but instead came out at 9:20. But 20 minutes makes no difference after waiting 6 hours. Trust me.When Green Day came out the place went nuts, obviously! I remember Tre walked out first, followed by Mike and Billie. Throughout the show they all screamed “Happy Fcuking New Year!!!!” Billie walked out onto the cat walk, and glowsticks and hats were flying everywhere! Someone hit Billie with a glowstick and he staid in a stern voice “Who threw that? I will fcuking KILL you.” But he laughed afterwards. Oh, Billie!I don’t recall every detail, but there are a few things that went on and I will discuss them in the set list:Know Your Enemy – This song rocks hard live. Since this was taped for television on New Years Eve, I knew Green Day had to play some newer songs to promote the album and such. So this was expected, but it was still awesome!East Jesus Nowhere – I love this song! And Billie made us sing the melody of the chords, like “woah oh oh oh oh!” It was so much fun, but no children were saved unfortunately.Burnout – AGAIN?!? Holy moly! Such a classic song and it just rules! I was so happy to hear this again, and actually see the band play it.Coming Clean – HELL YES! That is all that needs to be said.2,000 Light Years Away – Ooooh and the oldies keep coming. Much love for this song. Not many people knew it, but the few that did are pretty much awesome. Welcome to Paradise – Yeaaahhh! This song is probably the most fun live. Actually, it is! Everyone knows it and it’s perfect for gettin’ jiggy wit it. Who Wrote Holden Caulfield – The greatest song of all time, OF ALL TIME! I was screaming when it started. I have always always always wanted to hear this live and I did and it was amazing and I want to hear it again and I love this song so much and I love Green Day and this sentence is really long so I think I will stop it now. But this was the best part of the night, definitely!Dominated Love Slave – When Tre got up from his drum set, I knew what was coming! I was hoping for Like A Rat Does Cheese, but DLS is just as fantastic. Billie plopped down on the drums and banged them to death, while Tre rocked out on the guitar and sang his heart out. Hilarious, but heartwarming at the same time.Holiday – “Do you wanna start a fcuking war?!” This is one of the best songs off AI, and it’s always a pleasure to hear live. Especially when the whole crowd sings “the representatives of California now have the floor” verses!Murder City – Yes! Yes! Yes! I effing love this song like a mother and it’s incredible live! It should be played more often!Billie Joe asked the crowd what song we wanted to hear, and after a few seconds of every one screaming something different simultaneously,Christie Road – Woo hoo! The set list is just incredible, so many old songs! This is one of the bestest everest. Music to my ears.Going to Pasalacqua – I LOVE THIS SONG! AH! It was so awesome!!!!!!Disappearing Boy – In the middle, the usual melody was played (Sweet home Alabama and Sweet Child of Mine) and it was amazing. I know I don’t have a wide variety of adjectives to describe these songs, but they are all simply…. Epic. Are We the Waiting – This song always gives me chills, and I love the unity of the crowd as we sing the chorus together, arms up in the air swaying back and forth… the feeling can’t be replicated. St. Jimmy – Always following AWTW, this song is so full of energy and gets the crowd pumped. The perfect mosh song. And out came the acoustic guitar…21 Guns – The new major hit! The sparkler things that come down at the end are always beautiful. Just like the song. I can’t even describe it, so I won’t bother.American Eulogy – Another song that’s so much fun! Mike is an awesome singer and the harmonies and melodies in the song make it incredible and one of the best.Minority – YAY! This could also contend for the funnest live song… Band leaves GREEN DAY! GREEN DAY! GREEN DAY! GREEN DAY!Band returns Last Night on Earth – Billie was out on the catwalk, and whenever it got quiet in between verses, girls would scream “I luv u Billy!!!11!!1” It was annoying major. I noticed BJ’s nametag that says ‘Jesus’, so when it got quiet, I screamed “YEAH JESUS!” And people laughed and I think Billie heard me… It was awesome either way hahaha! After that, around 10:45, Green Day left the stage and the show ended. I was sad (because it was over) but also completely mindfcuked that they played so many oldies! It was definitely a show for the history books. I seriously wouldn’t be surprised if it shows up in my Government book next year. Srsly. As we were leaving, I picked up some hats and stuff off the floor so I could keep them as souvenirs. Even thought they were torn, covered in hair, and dirty, I took ‘em anyway. One fan’s trash is another fan’s treasure. For my 6th Green Day show, a FREE show by the way, I couldn’t have asked for more. Well, I could have, but I didn’t. I was perfectly content with 33 songs, 14 of which were Pre-Dookie, also including my favorite song of all time. Simply incredible. Wait, let me find some better words. It was phenomenal, dazzling, fantastic, astonishing, astounding, fabulous, fantastical, marvelous, miraculous, prodigious, stupendous, unbelievable, wonderful, wondrous, and more.

Bohemian+Scandal Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Oh, they're going to be live too? I think she meant they're going to be "live" as in pass off this gig as live... I think. Haha. When I read her post I was like, "wtf??" too.
Robin105 Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Yeah my guess is that they will keep switching back to the show and make it seem like it's live when it's really not. That's why they had everybody dress up. To make it look live when it actually airs. What they will air, now that's the question.
