DistilledxSpirits Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 I love this song to bits. It's probably my second favorite on the album behind Prosthetic Head.
Astrid. Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Great choice. It's such a great song. It gets easily stuck in my head for hours. But then it gets annoying
parinaz Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Great pick, and great song. I can only imagine what kind of mood Billie must have been in when he wrote this, and it's not a pretty picture: Washed up, burned out, all he sees the future holding for him is the deep despair and loneliness he feels right there in his own living room -- and he's got a loaded gun in his hand. As he fiddles with it and twirls it around his fingers, he asks himself whether he should just end it all already. *Shiver* Does anyone know the history behind this song, what (or who) Billie might have been writing about, etc.?that's what i wanna know. please any information, guys?
insomniaticnimrod Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 yes! i voted for this songI love this song so much, i love how it sounds, i love the lyrics. the way i interpret the song is that he realizes that he doesnt really have a good future ahead of him and he is just wasting time and not doing anything to change it, its just another notch on the belt..ive felt like that many times in my life
Ila Reto Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 what happened to posting the song with it? i LOVE this song to death  would you believe this is the only Uptight on youtube? (and maybe its because i havent listened to it in a while, but does it sound a pitch higher than usual?)
Agija Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 I was listening to it a couple of minuted ago! Great Choice, J'net. Uptight is an awesome song. Love the lyrics, especially the line "The future just ain't what it used to be."

There's an explanation there, and yes this one is a pitch higher .

GDC mobile doesn't let me see back pages i just thought for some reason there wasn't one a couple weeks ago, idk Oh, I get it! Well, I did say in the OP that the only Green Day recording I was able to find was this one and that the pitch was off, so I didn't post it. That's why it seemed funny to read your question about exactly what I had talked about .Yeah, I've always posted a video or audio for the sotw, but I searched everywhere and couldn't find anything except this one this week. And it's such a good song, too ... pity there's not a live performance recording of it.
Samantha Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Wow such a random choice Not really my favorite, but its definitely not a horrible song
J'net Posted October 13, 2009 Author Posted October 13, 2009 Wow such a random choice Not really my favorite, but its definitely not a horrible songActually it wasn't a random choice at all. I am keeping track of how many people vote for each song in the nominations thread, and this song had more votes than any other at the time I chose it. So apparently it is a lot of people's favorite, and I also love it myself .
Sharmellow Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 I woke up on the wrong side of the floor. Love the line for some reason. I guess partly that he didn't use I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. That has been overused so many times. One of my favorite songs from Nimrod.

Later, I might have to resort to random choices !
Bastard of 1967 Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I woke up on the wrong side of the floor. Love the line for some reason. I guess partly that he didn't use I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. That has been overused so many times. One of my favorite songs from Nimrod. "Wrong side of the bed" wouldn't get the right message across. "Wrong side of the floor" makes a play on the idiom and lets you know where he was when he did finally wake up -- and then invites you to speculate about what he did that put him there. Booze? Drugs? Both? Take your pick and run with it. One of the main subject matters Billie deals with on Nimrod is addiction in several different forms. Uptight fits well into that theme, and it's unique on the album in that it sends us on a brief journey to near-suicide as one consequence of that addiction.
Laura! Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I love this song! Always have. EDIT: 900 posts!

He says, "another notch scratched on my belt," which reminds me of another notch on the bed post. I don't think he's waking up in his own home. I think he wakes up in some place, possibly isn't even sure where he is, there's a stranger on the bed, and he doesn't even remember what happened the night before with her (or him) or why he ended up on the floor, but he's made another conquest - it's just not giving him the satisfaction it's supposed to. I can see him walking down the sidewalk in the same clothes he had on last night, lighting a cigarette and shoving his hands in his pockets. He's talking about a whole lifestyle and how physically, mentally, and spiritually unhealthy it is. So unhealthy that, as you say, "it sends us on a brief journey to near-suicide."And yet, I find hope in this song. He wakes up in the morning. He didn't use the gun. He has enough self-understanding to realize he's "on a dead end road." He's the person who can pull himself out of the bad place he's in.

Thanks for adding your interp, it's well-supported by the lyrics. "Owed/I paid off all my debts to myself" is one of the more vague metaphors Billie uses but I wonder if that verse might speak to precisely that self-realization.

And I agree with J'net, I don't think he was waking up in a different home. Made - made my way through the front door. That's the line that tipped me off. I've been uptight all night. That line, to me, made me think that he may have done drugs and alcohol, just like you suggested. Maybe even had a one night stand for all we know from the line another notch scratched on my belt.Edit:I just realized I put own home instead of a different home. But I fixed it. God, I'm so out of it today, haha.
Clockwise Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 This was one of the first songs off Nimrod that I really got into. LOTS of interesting lyrical choices here.
