J'net
ok, thanks. Sure - any time. I've noticed a few people saying things like they're glad this song "won," so I thought the clarification might be interesting for others, too. What do you think about this song? Do you like it? Mar
There's nothing to stop it being about both. Billie could write about someone's kid in the context of how people get so obsessed with celebrity and tabloids. As I said earlier, I think the song has multiple layers ... as do most of his songs. So, it can be interpreted on the different layers, and there's no "right" answer. That's my take anyway.Yeah, I certainly understand/agree with the celebrity culture idea, but I still view it as a father/daughter song regardless. Bastard of 1967
I think this is a showbiz story. The sweet sound of it is at odds with the whole tone of the lyrics, which are pretty harsh and cynical. 'Daddy's little bundle of joy/ out of a magazine' sounds like daddy's been making a bundle of cash from his daughter's career. The second part of the song, where it goes from 'she is my drama queen' to 'there goes my drama queen' - well, it's like he's lost his investment or his stake. '(un)folding/holding' can have a number of meanings - like the drug reference J'net makes - but the first thing I think of is poker. So, drama queen maybe finds a 'savior' - who or what is she being saved from? Maybe Daddy's control - what's for sure is that Daddy's rushing to find a lawyer and get this thing undone. 'She's old enough to bleed' is the refrain - I feel like that's a reference to how young girls in the spotlight are sexualized at such an early age. It's like this girl is basically 'fair game' once she crosses the line into puberty - she's pushed into an adult world, vulnerable and liable to be hurt, to 'bleed' emotionally. There's also the vibe that this girl is being 'bled' for money. You nailed it.
misslyssx
i enjoyed the live version but i dont really like the line "shes old enough to bleed..." just 'bit weirdHow is that weird? That's one my favorite parts. She's old enough to be hurt now...
xVanessa86x
^ I think everyone took that as her getting her period, you know? Like old enough to bleed now? But I never really thought about it like that. Drama Queen is such an amazing song, I really hope Green Day releases it on an album or something. The album version would be even more beautiful. Abbey.
Going from last week's song-of-the-week ANDROID to this week's DRAMA QUEEN was a 17-year jump in Billie Joe's life as a song-writer and I think DRAMA QUEEN shows that age difference. To start, I look forward to the opportunity someday to hear the clarity of his voice in a recording of this song. I think being able to really listen to it will bring a depth that will be moving - to hear the stretch of his voice would be oh-so-beautiful. Given Billie Joe states the song is about celebutards, I think he looks at the phenomenon from where he is in life - the father of a teenager and a tween. Whether its about a person/people/metaphorical I have no idea. Im a self-centered kinda gal so I make all their songs relevant to my OWN life. If I were of the male-teenie species I'd probably think about it in terms of a girlfriend/crush. As a parent I love the irony in the BEAUTY of the song and the UGLINESS of the subject: reality-media saturation/over-exposure. I have to admit that the line SHE'S OLD ENOUGH TO BLEED NOW just makes me think of getting my period. Gives me cramps just thinking about it. In my own humble opinion, the song would have been an interesting fit either before or after THE STATIC AGE on 21stCBD.
Isabel
I think that this song was a terrible choice for SOTW. (no offence)
J'net
I think that this song was a terrible choice for SOTW. (no offence)No problem! Everyone has their own opinion, but can you elaborate on why you feel that way? It's the discussion that makes it interesting .
Isabel
I just think that the SOTW should be one that has actually been released, so people's opinions can be based on more than just a live recording from NYC. Like, I can't form an opinion on this song at all, because I can't even hear it properly. That's all

And tbh, the quality of some of the recordings of this song is almost the same quality as, say, the Sweet Children EP.

Eirik
I would highly disagree with that. Well, okay, I exageratted, but the quality is in no way too bad to make a fair judgment of how the song sounds.

Like, I can't form an opinion on this song at all, because I can't even hear it properly. That's all I see your point, but in the one week since this song has been SotW, it's generated a lot more discussion than either of the others so far. I think that's because it's new and different and people haven't already discussed it at length. So, in that sense, it's really been the best SotW so far. Never fear though, there aren't many unrealeased songs that I have access to, so it'll probably be a loooooong time before we have another one of these . Supermodel*Robot
This song is beautiful. My mind is actually still trying to wrap itself around the fact that Billie can sing this way. Can you imagine if he'd had this voice when they recorded WMUWSE? I think we definitely need a full band version, I think it would make it a lot richer. Not something heavy, but sort of in a One for the Razorbacks or Words I Might Have Ate way.
