Anko Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I knew he wasn't using it in a racist context when I heard that he was going to be saying "niggers" on one of the tracks. I don't sing much anymore, and I haven't sang that out loud yet, but if I do I'm not gonna censor it.I just don't like the word. I found out about it while I was reading a book,I didn't know what it ment at the time, but I asked my mom and she told me.Then I felt sorta guilty for reading it I didn't even like it when my black friends would say it :/But it doesn't bother me any more, what does is the chance of it being on the news (cause god knows we need a new punching bag to blame for everything wrong with us kids today) now I know this has an extreamly slim chance of happening enless they decide to drop it as a single, but I don't want my folks ranting and shit and asking me how I can still listen to them. I don't think I can explain how they're using it to them.
Lauren Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Especially when I first heard that they used the "N" word,I took it out of context (not on here mind you in my head) but then I saw they were using it as a quote,it some how took some of the sting out. When I sing "American Eluogy" I replace it with either "fuckers" or some other word, and when I was singing along at the concert I just avoided that part all togeather.yeah, i replace it with "morons". it actually sounds better! hahaIt pisses me off when people get "offended" by shit. If you get offended, don't fucking look at it.he didn't look at it. that's the point.
Hermione Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Singing the word niggers in that context isn't offensive towards anyone. Just sing it!Do you miss out the word faggot when you're singing American Idiot too?
Anko Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Singing the word niggers in that context isn't offensive towards anyone. Just sing it!Do you miss out the word faggot when you're singing American Idiot too?Not really actually Good point Though I feel as though I'm disapointing my folks, though I disapoint them any way so what difference does it make ........................
Hermione Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Aww it's sung so fast they probably wouldn't even hear it. So they'd be no more disappointed than usual
Anko Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 I don't sing GD at home, mainly because al their music I have is on CD and I don't use it while I do dishes when I'd normaly sing But they have very acute hearing,so they'd hear if I said fag in a quick, quite voice
Dookie93 Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Your friend is a retard, and nobody I know got offended by Green Day. Oh wait I take that back, I've met people who think American Idiot, is an Anti-American song.
Andrick Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 i didnt notice the backdrop..but people shouldnt act like that.
darenmay Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 OK. Thanks for that, but when you put out that very ominous, "and they know why..." without clarification, from what I what read, you went there first! i'm sorry i didn't make it clear on my first post. thanks.
Tiffx Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Me neither. It kind of surprises me that a lot of people here seem to feel that way, for me one of the most appealing things about Green Day is that they go in for total honesty without worrying about who's offended. If they did want to make blatantly anti-Christian music because they felt that way I'd hope they wouldn't hold back.Yeah I totally agree. I wouldn't be offended by any anti-religious music, but that's easy for me to say because I'm not a very religious person. However, if bands/artists feel like they want to express their views on religion and politics then they have every right to do so. People are going to be offended by shit all the time, it's something that you just have to accept and not allow it to dictate the way music is expressed.
stuart telegraph Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Well, I've heard of bands who actually get on stage and TALK into the microphone that God isn't real. But yeah...umm... listen to Billie before they play chump at woodstck 94
Guest Hayley Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Personally I believe that his reaction was wrong and extreme.

¡VivaLaAndrea! Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 I'm a little surprised that somebody would go to a Green Day concert and be that surprised at dramatic and controversial imagery that they would leave.Nothing that Green Day does, in that sense, is done just to get attention, it's not like Billie Joe writes things like "kill all the fags that don't agree," or "it's just a bunch of niggers" to stir up controversy or have attention put on them. It's the same thing as editing the album for Wal-Mart. From my viewpoint, there's nothing obscene in 21st Century Breakdown. The religious rants, the racial slurs- there's a point to it all, there's meaning there.I understand why people would be offended, but if you're going to go to a Green Day concert, you should already have an idea what to expect. They've never been the kind of band to sugarcoat things or hold back for fear of offending anyone.
valeria carci Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 well this is a serious topicI'm not surprised by that reaction... I won't do that but anyone who cares a lot 'bout religion can't agree with gd, I believe in god and I have a lot of respect for all that stuff but I understand that sometiemes religion uses people's faith and it doesn't have anything to do with the real meaning of "a religion" and that's the gd point
Mar Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 back to the topic though,it just bothers me so much! cause hes someone that i talk to on a daily basis and with all the things that have been going on, I talk about Green Day alot. The concert was like me falling in love all over again, so its green day channel 24/7 in my brain, right now. lol. and before, i used to talk about green day somewhat a lot anyway and he would either join in or at least listen. now it just sucks. My brain is basically the same way yours is!One of my good friends was really liberal and loved American Idiot, and has since become a Mormon because she fell in love with Glenn Beck, and mentioned to me the other night that she doesn't listen to the CD anymore since it's so anti-Bush. Of course, I gave the argument of the album mentioning no particular politicians, and while the themes of the album were topical in 2004 in terms of the election, the storytelling in the album and the overall themes of trying to find your way in a messed up world could still apply to you and be meaningful no matter the year, president, or your political ideology. While the guys are clearly liberal in their thinking, I don't think you have to be a liberal to enjoy their music.
Trotsky Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 One of my good friends was really liberal and loved American Idiot, and has since become a Mormon because she fell in love with Glenn Beck,Where do all the stupid people come from? GOD DAMMIT.
¡VivaLaAndrea! Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 I like a lot of musicians whose political views I don't agree with. The political views of a songwriter shouldn't affect how you feel about their music, about their lyrics, maybe, obviously depending on the song, but still. I don't agree with everything that the guys in Green Day does, and I am willing to bet a couple million dollars they disagree amongst themselves on plenty, but that doesn't change the music.
madie Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 That backdrop is so ambigious. I wouldn't even connotate that to Jesus
Rebel07 Posted September 19, 2009 Author Posted September 19, 2009 Where do all the stupid people come from? GOD DAMMIT.i know, it drives me mad
Mar Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 i know, it drives me mad Yeah, I love her and I'm happy she's happy, but it's like...she's become exactly the person songs like EJN were written about.
Sunshine2385 Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 i say it's tasteful, a red bloody cross which is what he died on instead of a big red X
heartscollide Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Your friend is a retard, and nobody I know got offended by Green Day. Oh wait I take that back, I've met people who think American Idiot, is an Anti-American song. That's why at the start of Holiday Billie Joe used to say 'This song ain't anti-american it's anti-waaaaaaaaaaar!'
