-Billiejoezee- Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 and wow i didn't notice that backdrop at any shows.. i guess i never really take my eyes off Billie hahayou're eyes are gifted.
misslyssx Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 you're eyes are gifted.i'm guessing yours are too
Rebel07 Posted September 17, 2009 Author Posted September 17, 2009 i grew up with very strict Catholics and i can see how they might get offended.. i never really played into any of it though and this song just makes me respect GD even more.and wow i didn't notice that backdrop at any shows.. i guess i never really take my eyes off Billie hahai didn't notice the backdrops either really. i was too close to see it and plus i was too busy watching the band. and rocking out on stage
Tiffx Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Don't like the picture, don't look at it and shut up.Your friend didn't have to leave, it really isn't that big of a deal. It's a bit hard being at a GD show and avoiding their lovely antics and in this case, displays on the stage. So I say if you are a religious person and get offended at the drop of a hat, don't go to a Green Day show and stay home where you're safe.
**nobodylikesyou** Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I can certainly understand why your friend was offended.I don't agree with everything Mr. Armstrong has to say or express, but I respect him for doing it, and am aware of it before I step foot into the arena. So at least I am prepared for it and not caught off guard. HOWever, even if I was I would just say, well thats their opinion, its still some damn good music.
Sharmellow Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I'd only get offended if Green Day said out loud that God sucks, so don't believe in him. But, I'm not one to be easily offended. Everyone has their own opinions, if you don't like them, then tough luck. And, at least Billie has the balls to state his own opinions unlike some people in this world.
hoistthecolors Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 it is a letdown, to have your friend walk out. it's hard, because if someone's beliefs are so deeply engrained, you can't really do anything to make them feel better and change their mind, you know? it just sucks if he really did love them, because it's hard when that conflicts with how you were brought up or what you believe in.i love everything they have to say, and that they aren't afraid to say it; as i know everyone else has pointed out already. i really hope things change for him they're too good of a band.
Juan Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I'd only get offended if Green Day said out loud that God sucks, so don't believe in him. But, I'm not one to be easily offended. Everyone has their own opinions, if you don't like them, then tough luck. And, at least Billie has the balls to state his own opinions unlike some people in this world. And what if they said it? It's still their opinion, there are bands that are a lot more direct and explicit regarding religion (less eloquent though, no one ever has used a sodomy metaphor), Green Day is somewhat tame compared to Bad Religion or NOFX, who have songs, particularly NOFX (there's a song called "You're Wrong", go figure) that say There's no god whatsoever. And it's still their opinion. But it's funny, If it were Sean Hannity expressing himself, everybody would go at him, "He's an asshole" but if it's some people saying there's no God, it's their opinion. Maybe there's a double standard hidden there somewhere, it's important to respect everybody else's opinion but it's also important questioning it. All issues aside, I like what Green Day's doing. My motives, well, that's another thing.
valentinesandcigs Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 see this is why ejn wont be a single to many people would get offended while i think it sucks is pretty true
BIBARAGURORIA Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 i don't know about Tre and Mike, but Billie is Catholic. When did he explicitly state that he was Catholic? I don't remember him ever mentioning being Catholic, I always thought he was Agnostic or an Atheist.just make sure they dont watch LF!DF....penis-swastika bwahaha! The penis-Swastika was WIN. Actually, pretty much all of LF!DF! was win. I want a .gif avatar of the disembodied head of Hay sucking his own cock.I went to the show in Inglewood which is a predominantly black area, and when I heard "American Eulogy" I was like. "No way he's gonna say it...No way he's gonna say it...No way he's gonna say it...----" Then I hear the N word and was like "HOLY SHIT HE SAID IT!"Since when has Billie censored his lyrics just to please some people? To be honest I was more offended by them using the "N" word than the back drop :/Especially when I first heard that they used the "N" word,I took it out of context (not on here mind you in my head) but then I saw they were using it as a quote,it some how took some of the sting out. When I sing "American Eluogy" I replace it with either "fuckers" or some other word, and when I was singing along at the concert I just avoided that part all togeather.I knew he wasn't using it in a racist context when I heard that he was going to be saying "niggers" on one of the tracks. I don't sing much anymore, and I haven't sang that out loud yet, but if I do I'm not gonna censor it.
GDM Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 When did he explicitly state that he was Catholic? I don't remember him ever mentioning being Catholic, I always thought he was Agnostic or an Atheist. From what I've read, he grew up Catholic, even if minimally. I could be wrong though, and I readily admit if I am.
BIBARAGURORIA Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 From what I've read, he grew up Catholic, even if minimally. I could be wrong though, and I readily admit if I am.Just because he grew up Catholic, doesn't mean he still is. I'm pretty sure he's Agnostic.
GDM Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Just because he grew up Catholic, doesn't mean he still is. I'm pretty sure he's Agnostic.Uh... I never said that he was still Catholic, did I? No. I did not. I was asking him whether he thought they would get excommunicated because I didn't understand the "they will know what will happen" comment if they use the backdrop in Catholic countries. It was one of several examples I gave the original commentator in order to understand where he was coming from. Oh, and by the way, welcome to the GDC.

farley drexel hatcher Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I actually think Billie was raised Christian anyway. A few years ago he said he liked Catholic symbols but a few months back he said he considers himself agnostic.
GDM Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 You said that Billie is Catholic, not was or grew up Catholic. That lead me to believe that you think he still is Catholic.Thanks.OK, I understand now how it was misinterpreted. I am fully aware they he doesn't currently practice a religion. And Tedifer, thank you for your clarification. Much appreciated.
Trotsky Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 A lot of you justify East Jesus Nowhere as only attacking hypocrites/fundamentalists, whatever, and true as that may be, it almost bothers me if the majority of you would have a problem with blatant Anti-Christian music. Because I don't, at all.

darenmay Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I grew up Pentacostal, which is much harsher than Catholicism will ever be. So when you say I don't understand about how people can be offended about the backdrop, you are assuming something you have no right to assume. So please don't attempt to say to me who would be offended the most by a Christian perspective since you don't know anything about me or my upbringing. Thanks!I completely understand how people can get offended, which is what I said in my post. What you didn't read is that I personally don't find it offensive because I understand where they are coming from. We'll see if they use it in Portugal, Mexico, Spain, Italy, or any other Catholic country. But if they have to stop using it in Mexico or Spain, then they also have to stop using it in every South American country that they are going to. If they change it for one, they have to change it for all of them. Like I said, we'll see. But I don't think they will do it.By the darenmay, are you thinking that there will be a riot in the stadium if they use it? EJN comes the third song in the show... do you think the stadium is going to walk out?Do you know what Billie does during that song? He saves a child. Should they stop doing that, too?"and they know why."can you elaborate on why they "know why"? will someone pull a gun out on them and shoot them dead on the spot? Will their concerts be cancelled? I'm sorry, but your statement really makes no sense. maybe you are thinking that they will be excommunicated? i don't know about Tre and Mike, but Billie is Catholic. Is that what you are thinking?best, tanyai don't think people will walk-out or riot if they actually use that backdrop in catholic countries. i wasn't saying those things. you're taking it much to the next level of horrible possibilities. people might get offended with that backdrop and stay until the concert finishes.nonetheless, i do believe green day won't be using that backdrop in catholic countries. maybe only as a respect to them even though EJN is about them. lol

Thanks for that, but when you put out that very ominous, "and they know why..." without clarification, from what I what read, you went there first!

Because I don't, at all.Me neither. It kind of surprises me that a lot of people here seem to feel that way, for me one of the most appealing things about Green Day is that they go in for total honesty without worrying about who's offended. If they did want to make blatantly anti-Christian music because they felt that way I'd hope they wouldn't hold back.
fashionvictim86 Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 It pisses me off when people get "offended" by shit. If you get offended, don't fucking look at it.
Kayfabe Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Now, it's all easy for me to say "You should have told them what bullcrap religion is!!one!" from behind my computer screen, but when it's a friend it's much more tough :/ Still though, he is fucking insane for leaving a green day concert.Me neither. It kind of surprises me that a lot of people here seem to feel that way, for me one of the most appealing things about Green Day is that they go in for total honesty without worrying about who's offended. If they did want to make blatantly anti-Christian music because they felt that way I'd hope they wouldn't hold back. The bible of Christianity promotes hatred, incest, and murder amongst many things. I don't care what anyone fucking says, I oppose that shit.EDIT: Whoops I misread.
JHyena86 Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 It pisses me off when people get "offended" by shit. If you get offended, don't fucking look at it.This...My mom always gets offended by the song Minority 'cause of the "Down with the moral majority" line. And I'm like "Mom, it's just a song." But it doesn't seem to matter...she likes commenting on their stuff when she doesn't agree. Like with Modern World she's all "I don't think you/they would like it much if they weren't in the modern world..."People need to learn to just get over it. It's their opinion, not the way it is...
