I like the song alright, but the video didn't portray the story behind the video. Because supposedly, they had robbed a bank and then had an argument. But I didn't think the video showed any of that :/

im really excited to see how they will do the music video; I envisage some walking tracking shots (similar to BOBD) with things around them exploding, falling apart- literally breaking down. of course combined with performance shots

As crucial Christian and Gloria are to the album/song, i personally dislike music video where there are parts acted out by actors *Thinks of WMUWSE and shudders* ok i know its a concept rock opera album, but i think a Green Day music video should be full of just Green Day

do you think theyll do a making of and a little preview video like they did with 12 guns???

I just heard EJN on my local rock station Rock 108 (not 21CB)

And they said "here is the new one from Green Day.... it's called East Jesus Nowhere"

It was not edited or anything like people have been saying

But it doesn't surprise me that this station played it because they played the 21CB demo A LOT when it "leaked"

Thats what I dont understand- I dont think that 21 guns was a particularly flat video, ok it wasnt as great as some of the older videos, but there was still a visual dynamic which I could appreciate. I think that mabye sometimes a music video can never live upto peoples expectations; everyone wants to see something different and a director can't always cater to everyones needs. I personally thought that there was an underlying intensity to 21guns, not through the narrative, but the editing and production design. Like the way the whole video was set in the same location, it kind of highlighted an intensity between Christian and Gloria, and then the band and the characters they have created. Just little things, like the explosions, the feathers, the sparks and slow motion when the couple kissed ( with an intertextual link to the front cover of the album), the swich from darkness to light, symbolic of America now perhaps "seeing the light?". And who could forget those stunning close ups of Billie

As for KYE, it wasnt brilliant, but really, i think the video was there to re-iterate what brilliant performers Green Day are, that and that alone. Yes, there was some meaning to the video cameras, and searchlights, being stuck in the hysterical mass media society that we live in. But it was mainly a performance video.

As for whats next, who knows, but from looking at previous work by the music video director, i dont think we have anythng to worry about in terms of the video being visually opulent

^ i agree. but by "flat" i meant not capturing the full meaning of the song.

there's so many layers to each track, and after all, one video can't cram an album's worth of emotions.

and i dont think even the best video in the world could.

However, how is it truely possible to capture the full "meaning" of a song? by depicting it in images word for word? I don't know if you lot have had any experience with music videos, but I can tell you, generally the video does not depict the lyrical meaning exactly, generally the director looks at the lyrics and tries to encapsulate the feeling of the song . In relation to 21 guns, the way I see it as a surrender, and accepting things for what they are. Christian and Gloria show this in the video throug the kiss; they accept the distruction (explosions) around them and literally embrace the moment, as it could be their last together.

Again however, everyones interpretation of the song can be different, so it cannot be possible to create the "meaning" of the song, as to different individuals, the song has different meanings.

I am happy that the single this time around isn't "East Jesus Nowhere" like most people anticipated, but still I'd rather have "The Static Age" or "Murder City" as the 3rd single.

But I honestly admire what Marc did for 21 guns. you know, some of u believe that it socks but If you understand the story of the album you will find out that it is the best idea for this song. and I founded the sound of guitar like the sound of bullet in it when the glasses break or .. I found it beautiful. the song 21 guns on the album is the part that christian and Gloria have found that how much they need each other again and have come back to each other again. so marc did a good job. do any of u have a better idea for this song?

I'm sure the video for 21st century breakdown is gonna be good, because it is a good song and you can have good ideas for it.
