J'net Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 Not so much harsh as totally misinformed and inaccurate! This thing is so littered with inaccuracies and vagueness it makes me laugh, he clearly knows virtually nothing of the band or their music. Nothing to pay attention to here.Agreed. I see "From a band who started out singing about masturbation..." in almost every article about Green Day and I just roll my eyes.Hahaha - as usual, I agree with you completely, Hermione. It seems funny to me that he puts them down for having no "social conscience" in their early days and then puts them down for developing exactly that as they mature. So, ummm, what does he, in all his wisdom, think they should sing about? Spaceships? Sinkholes? Carpooling?I also agree strongly with Angie-Marie that there's no point getting upset about someone who can't even make sense. And yes, loved the comment, "There are fifth graders who are better at staying on topic than this guy."
Supermodel*Robot Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 So, ummm, what does he, in all his wisdom, think they should sing about? Spaceships? Sinkholes? Carpooling?YES.otherwise, this doesn't really upset me. He was obviously doesn't know much about them, so his opinion has little value.

packers182 Posted August 31, 2009 Author Posted August 31, 2009 I have absolutely no idea what this album-by-album review has to do with the American Idiot musical. There are fifth graders who are better at staying on topic than this guy.this is exacting what I was thinking he is supposed to be writing about the musical not album reviews and lol to the last sentence.
.Militza. Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 he is right. Well, I got the feeling he's accusing them for going big again with American idiot. And I kinda thought he's one of those veterans. But they also started listening to GD when Dookie came out. Minority of people knew them before the Dookie, so they're basically the same as the AI era fans, just older.
GDM Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 He is sorta right. Well, sorta.yes, he does have a point. however, i'm happy that they take chances. they are a strange band, punk, pop, I don't know. I just like them. I guess if I were an old school fan I would be a bit angry, i guess, that they don't sound like they use to, but maybe because I am an AI Green Day fan and fell in love with them backwards, if you will, I don't mind what I consider growth as opposed to selling out to the radio. If they did that, 21stCB might be selling a tad better than it is, I suppose. I hear a natural progression when I listen to them, but that's just me.I also don't agree with him about Warning. I think it's much different from everything else, but that doesn't make it bad. I like the way that album comes out of the blue in a way. though I don't really need to hear Good Riddance again... I do think a next album could be a bit more stripped down. I don't know. Where do you go from here if you are Green Day?
.Militza. Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 ^ I love Warning album It's one of the best I've ever heard.Simply great.

incendiary girl Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 As a "Dookie era" fan, I saw a lot of my friends start tuning out after Nimrod. A few of them still listened to Green Day up until Warning, but most of them got pissed that they weren't going back to songs that sounded like Dookie and Kerplunk. Apparently moving forward and progressing is "selling out" now. I never bought into that idea. Yeah they've had highs and lows, but I never thought they sold out. As far as AI and 21CB, I can't even explain how excited I was for both albums. Maybe it's the theatre kid in me, but I could never look at either of them as being anything less than brilliant. Sadly, only a few of my (old school Green Day fan) friends agree with me on that. Maybe it's just resistance to change for some people, but I would hate it if my favorite band stayed the same and never explored new ideas and progressed. I don't think they'd be my favorite band anymore. That's just me though. Wow...that was kind of a rambly paragraph. Basically what I'm trying to say is... I don't understand or relate to that article. Green Day is awesome!

But they also started listening to GD when Dookie came out. Strychnine Fink Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 it seemed like he just wanted ot hate on Green Day and didn't actually listen to anything besides what he'd heard on the radio
Heather! Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 How annoying that he brought up the whole "GD steals music" thing. That album came out awhile ago and if it was even a serious issue then there would have been lawsuits... but there weren't.Did this guy even listen to the lyrics of any of their songs? Although a lot of GD's early music had to do with adolescence, it wasn't just about masturbation and whatever else he mentioned.
Angie-Marie Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 Here's a more thoughtful critique written by a fan who is unhappy with their current musical trend. It was posted on nothingwrongwithme.comhttp://mikeamin.blogspot.com/2009/08/requiem-green-day.htmlThat's the kind of review I can actually respect. Even if I don't agree, at least it he knew what he was talking about, there was thought put into it and was well written. It's everything the one from the San Francisco Chronicle isn't.As a "Dookie era" fan, I saw a lot of my friends start tuning out after Nimrod. A few of them still listened to Green Day up until Warning, but most of them got pissed that they weren't going back to songs that sounded like Dookie and Kerplunk. Maybe it's just resistance to change for some people, but I would hate it if my favorite band stayed the same and never explored new ideas and progressed. I don't think they'd be my favorite band anymore. That's just me though.I think Green Day was ultimately damned if they did and damned if they didn't in the post-Warning era. If they had tried to make another Dookie album, they'd have been criticized for trying to be commercial and clinging to their old sound. There probably would have been loads of reviews that said, "These guys are how old now and they're still singing about masturbation and weed?" If they went in a whole new direction, they'd lose fans who were still hoping for another Longview. If you can't win, you might as well just do what you want and that's what they did. Frankly, I also might have moved on from Green Day if they hadn't moved onto American Idiot. I don't get why it's apparently a bad thing to have ambition, to explore new things and move forward.
Supermodel*Robot Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 I totally respect Mike Amin's opinions. I came in at American Idiot, so all the attitude & sound changes didn't affect me. I was just amazed that this incredible band had even rawer stuff. So coming in late and finding the early stuff was a fantastic experience. However, thinking in an early fan's shoes, I can see how you could be upset. He makes an intelligent argument, even if I don't agree with his opinion on new Green Day.
Modern Zero. Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 yes, he does have a point. however, i'm happy that they take chances. they are a strange band, punk, pop, I don't know. I just like them. That's one reason why I love GD so much. They really are a strange band. They're unique and yet they fit right in the mainstream. I love how they change it up every album. It makes them different and it creates a variety of things for a fan to listen to and it also proves that they can play more than one style of music. I agree with you on Warning. I just love the way that album makes me feel.
Tiffx Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 I will never understand the dislike some people have for Warning. It wasn't that ambitious IMO.
packers182 Posted August 31, 2009 Author Posted August 31, 2009 I will never understand the dislike some people have for Warning. It wasn't that ambitious IMO.yea me either. I pretty much like every song on the cd
MusicalDeviant Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 I'm sorry, we care about this article because? Everyone's entitled to their (misguided) opinions. He'll just have to go to the grave not understanding nor being able to appreciate the greatness of this album. If anything, I feel sorry for him. I'm sure he's a big fan of Fall Out Boy.
packers182 Posted August 31, 2009 Author Posted August 31, 2009 I'm sure he's a big fan of Fall Out Boy.lol yea i bet
.Militza. Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 They totally changed their image for American Idiot, unlike Dookie, and i think thats mostly why he doesnt like them.Image? That's what makes musician, an image? He's really a great reviewer then.
Anja Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 Well, the author writes from the view of a non-Green Day fan and Seinfeld just opened the song (or even the band) to a wider audience so for people who aren´t/weren´t fans or bear no relation to the song, it´s just the "Seinfeld song". I can imagine that people who have heard the song at that time bought the album with the expectation of similar songs cause they didn´t no who Green Day really were/are. (I hope I get my point across ) I don´t agree with everything he said but he´s right with some of the things.
