About the cencorship though, I get if they block out 'god' and make it "I never asked you a ___ damn thing" (they did that with the Panic at the Disco song). The "like a dog that's been sodomized" shouldn't be blocked out or changed cause it defeats the purpose of the song. Plus, there's no swearing involved, and some radio stations don't even edit out the swearing, making it completely unnessecary to change the sodomy thing.

What's the point of this being released if (I'm assuming) both Green Day and Warners knew it would be censored ? It's obviously a controversial song and they must have known it wouldn't get played in it's original form. You can't rail against Wal-Mart with a straight face while your record company allows your song to be censored however the radio stations like behind your back.

Radio stations edit songs so that they can be played and be considered "family-friendly" or whatever. The Wal-Mart thing is completely different. Wal-Mart wanted GD to censor their entire record and sell it that way, and Green Day didn't want listeners to think that the band didn't support their music as is. Green Day didn't feel that their music was dirty or needed censoring, and didn't want to treat it as such.

Radios do this with every song that has a "bad word" in it (although sodomized isn't a bad word, but whatever). The band didn't do it, and they didn't rewrite the lyrics for the song. The radio just edited out the "sodomized" piece of the song and had it pick up a few verses later. They did the same thing with American Idiot (the song). I mean, it sucks that they have to do that, but it's not the band's fault. Most radios have to censor their songs. Just the way they are.

But that's the thing that annoys me, should we be angry at Warner's (or whoever's decision it was to release the song) because they know it'll get censored or the radio stations for censoring it ? After all, if Green Day don't release the song as a single in the first place, the radio stations wouldn't be playing it. Should they have chosen a 'safer' song and not had it censorded (which could be more boring for us) or gone ahead with this and had it censored (a more interesting song, in which case can we moan ?).

But it does look a bit hypocritical to attack a supermarket for trying to censor your music only to allow radio stations (who are all owned by a handful of multinational companies) to do it instead. Besides, they can afford to have Wal Mart ban the album a lot more than they can have thousands of radio stations ban the single.

^ I guess it's just at matter of opinion. I hate censorship with a passion, but at the same time, if the only way radio stations will play EJN is if it's censored, and if some new listener gets hooked on Green Day from hearing that song on the radio - who am I to argue? I want people to hear as many songs as possible from 21CB, because it's a brilliant album.

I think Green Day should just do what they do and if the radio decides to edit it... oh well. It's what radios have always done and what they'll continue to do. Not saying I like it, but it's just the way the radio is. At least the radio gets listeners interested, and if they want to hear the whole song, they can go buy the album.

The guys, in the end, should make whatever songs they want into singles and fuck what the radio does to them.

I'm not mad at the guys or Warner Brothers or Reprise at all. The radio is about giving your album exposure, and I understand that. I hate that the whole song isn't being played, but I personally think it's better than not being played at all.

BTW I'd love to see Static Age as a single, too.

I think thats really stupid that it got edited like that for radio play, to me it really loses some of the meaning of the song especially for someone who was listening to it and didnt have the album

for OUR radio they didn't cencore anything the first time they played it.

not even "god damn thing".

^ you've heard it on the radio?????????????????????

Dude I need to listen to it more often, but I hate how much crap is played on it nowadays

I barely ever listen to the radio, only when my mom turns it on in the car. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't listen at all. Between commercials and stupid crappy songs, it's not worth it. My ipod is a billion times more enjoyable.

Our other car has Sirius/XM radio, though, and they don't censor stuff on most of their stations. Pretty awesome.

I totally agree. Radios are just a big bore they play two songs and then 6 mins of commercials

But it may seem weird but I'll listen to the radio just to here GD on it

LOL, whenever I hear Green Day on the radio I always get excessively excited. I don't know why, because I could easily pop a CD in or listen to my ipod and hear them, but there's something special about the surprise of hearing them on the radio.

I haven't even heard this song on the radio yet.

I hate the radio. And I hate censorship. Why can't you just leave it the way the artist intended it to be.

Yeah, I get why you need to edit and spiffy up a bit on the radio to make it 'radio friendly' but you don't need to change the context of the song and furthermore its intended meaning.

You can silence or bleep a little portion of the word without doing that and sitll have the meaning intact and not a whole reworking of another lyric.

Absolutely ridiculous. I hate when people do that when they could have done something else, and censorship needs to be limited.

It makes a song completely loose its meaning for me.

Yeah me too. I heard Green Day quite often on the Austrian radio when I was on holiday.

I don't know how many times they play their songs here in Holland cause I never listen to the radio myself. Just some times when it's on in my brother's car

I sure wish I knew WTF this was all about ... Or at least be able to hear the rewrite myself.

I desperately hope Green Day didn't decide on this apparent rewrite personally.

Posted

Oooh, I'm interested to hear the rewritten lyrics. Until then, I won't comment on how stupid the idea is. :D

And I remember once watching the video for Teenage Dirtbag by Weezer - they kept the word 'dick' in, but censored out 'gun'. What the fuck?
