MusicalDeviant Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 This is seriously bullshit. I don't recall any lyric changes when they first played the song on the radio the week before the album was released. They silenced the profanity, but the rest was left alone. Personally the bleeps encourage listeners to discover the actual music. Its just good business. So to change the song at all strikes me as just plain weird. And stupid. Altering the message of the song is a BAD IDEA. Its like BOBD's and is lame "all muffed up" all over again. Damnit damnit damnit!
Ila Reto Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 ^ i agree, and my only disapointment about this, besides what others have mentioned about censorship, is that they didn't even mention the fact that they wrote alternate lyrics. it's like, "surprise! we jumbled up our own song and now everyone has to deal with it YAY!" all im saying is, they better not use the changed lyrics in the single's video. then all the noobs will be running around singing it incorrectly and it's an earsore.

(pardon the pun). This song is my favorite on this album, and it would be a major shame to see the video use the edited version. I would feel mildly betrayed. The song in its original form is so brilliant in its criticism that it would really piss off so many people, and it would be wonderful.
Harriet Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I don't think Green Day would ever re-record vocals just for airplay. If anything, Warner or the radio stations have edited it. I've yet to hear this on UK radio, i will request it tomorrow and let y'all know how it turns out. I really hope they don't censor it over here. I don't think they will though, they're not as crazy about censorship as they are in the US.
blitzkriegdeb Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 Plus, it all depends on the radio stations. Pop-based stations will probably have the more heavily-censored versions while rock-based stations will have the less-censored versions.

We're going on one thing one person said she heard which could mean a number of different things, most likely that the radio did some editing of the song to fit their standards. People take everything so literallly.

chatnoir Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 So how/where can I find this 'censored version' ?You people are masochists. I dread hearing this, but I have to know, if they really did it. In the studio, vocalists usually sing lyrics in a lot of different ways and record all of them until they decide what they want. Most likely - Warner sent these demo vocals to radio stations for editing. Seriously, I'm surprised how fast you people accuse Green Day of things.Even if it was Warner, who did this - They are Green Day's chosen record company, no one forced them to work with Warner. It's their music, their lyrics, their responsibility. If not, I mean, if they gave this responsibility out of their hands, then I would accuse them of not taking action to change that. But it's all speculation anyway, since no one has recorded this version yet.

mad hatter. Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 There is no proof they have re-written anything yet. After all these years, why would they?true. until there's actual proof of a lyrical change, i can't really say anything.people do need to calm down, though..don't start harassing the radio station, guys...
Trotsky Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 music business is scary. This is why I'm a fucking pirate! 20,000 downloads strong!
Hermione Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 How shitty. I hope it was just the radio station who changed the lyric, because if not....... :/The new album is so exciting and ambitious, yet everything released from it so far has been the tamest, safest and least ambitious possible option every time. Releasing the two most conventional sounding songs on the album with uninteresting videos, followed by this pathetic censoring (whoever's responsible for it).......it's just so disappointing and doesn't represent this brilliant and diverse album at all. I'm really hoping it was just that station, and when I hear it on the radio any necessary censoring will just be cutting the word out and not changing it. East Jesus Nowhere is just what's needed to show off how great the album is, and it'd be a shame if it's marred by a dodgy re-write.
