I think "Green Day" coming up in your google search is better than "Sweet Children"...just sayin

I kind of think that Sweet Children is pretty unoriginal...

I bet when they thought of it [they obviously weren't children per se..] But they used their age as as idea..

I am glad they did choose Green Day.

Pot Reference? sure.

But thinking about it in the long run, they're almost 40. And Sweet Children would've just killed people's first impressions...

LOL sweet children - amercian idiot.

i think they should have kept the name JUST to contradict their lyrics

well when green day were starting out as sweet children they were starting to get known quite well as sweet children, which is why they were quite hesitant to change their name to green day... One of the reasons they did change their name however was that they had opened/played with a band called sweet baby jesus (if you look through the live guide at some early 90's flyers there is at least one gig with them both playing at gilman (i think...)) and they thought their name was too similar and i think that at the time sweet baby jesus were better known and liked (mabey)

Soon after changing their name they released an ep and did a national tour of america im pretty sure, so that would have helped boost them as green day... To be honest, i dont think changing their name would have changed much, however, i think that they would have eventually kind of grown out of the name sweet children as they became more acclaimed.

...now back to uni work :P

They've said that they hate their name as 'Green Day'? I never heard that. ;o

Of course I think they'd do just as well. I don't base a band on whether or not I like their name. I knew their music far before I knew the name of their band, and I imagine a lot of people are like that.

They've said that they think that they have the WORST rockband name, but I don't think that they hate it.

"Do you think that if you kept the name Sweet Children and released the exact same albums, would Green Day be as big as it is now"

If they kept the name Sweet Children and released the exact same albums, Green Day would not be as big as it is now.

some reasons:

1. they would be called Sweet Children and not Green Day.

2. Marketing... example: New Kids on the Block is not such a big success anymore since the members grew up.

3. False advertising... saying they were sweet children and singing some of the not so sweet stuff that they do...

Changing the band name to Green Day was a true bonus idea.

The name would have been fine when they were on Lookout, and maybe with dookie, but after that the name wouldn't have been good. It just doesn't sound right with the music.

I think, that they would have as much success as today, but for me it would be a little bit strange to see Sweet Children under my posters and with 36/37 they aren't sweet Children anymore..

I honestly don't think they would have been as big if they had kept Sweet Children. What kind of parent would by an album for their kid that sounds like it was made by a punch of pedophiles?

i dont think they would have been as big.

there was another east bay band around that time named Sweet Baby anyway.

i recall billie saying in "behind the music":

"we went from one bad name to another. we still have the worst band name in punk rock"

but i think it's catchy.

and when i dont want people to know im talking about green day, i call them sweet children lol

well I think if they would have kept the name Sweet Children maybe they weren't so big because it sounds like kids making music . With Green Day it's a little more like being an adult. BUT: I think the music would be the same, because it isn't depending on the name

Do we know what other names they had besides Sweet Children and Green Day??

To be honest i don't mind the name Sweet Children. I would have still liked them if they had kept that name, but i do think Green Day suits them much more. I don't think saying 'Do you like Sweet Children' to someone would sound entirely right anyway.

I'm sure I read one of them say in an interview that were called Condom at one point. Although they could've been joking when they said that . Either way I doubt they were called that for any more than a few days. Apparently they went through loads of random names.

I think they were called Truant and then Blood Rage.

That was probably when they were just doing some heavy metal covers though.

Thank god they got into punk.

Oh god really? I didn't know that, but I'm happy they choose for Green Day
