Lauren Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 On one hand I love it, because it just makes the band seem like they're SO into He always sings the whole song. He only pulls people up to play the guitar, nothing else.nope. he has been picking people at some shows to sing Dearly Beloved. (the guitarist gets off after I Don't Care) ...at the Philly show, after he took his guitar back, he actually let the guitarist sing it instead of picking a new person.
XusernameX Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 i think its great that they let people come up to sing and play guitar. i think it make him happy knowing that he just made some day/year/life.
Lauren Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Really???I've not heard of that!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZbKoJfymTQthe guy at our show was really good but yeah, it happened at a few other shows, too. i heard one show the Dearly Beloved singer was REALLY bad and Billie kicked her off stage...
SaintSaturn Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Would you guys care if I played drums on Longview? Cause I totally would if they picked me, but it seems they aren't doing that this tour.
lookoutrebelgirl Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 i fucking love the fact that they do tis! I love that this band is so close and cool with there fans and there live show is a good percent of why they are my favorite band.
Mar Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Normally I would be annoyed at something like this ("they're just too lazy to do the songs" is a complaint I had about others doing this) but I really think with GD they bring people on stage purely to make a better connection with the fans. It kind of brings back the idea that even though these guys are world famous stars, they started out as normal bratty kids who would sing songs like Longview, like coming full circle, if that makes any sense.I see why people would be annoyed with bad singers, and that's bound to happen. But as others have said, I think that if YOU were picked, you'd approve of the practice, at least a little bit!
Blu Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 The idea of fans getting on stage with the band is great. But them singing or playing an instrument is not so great for me. At the MxPx shows I've been to they always pull fans on stage to play "Heard that Sound" because it's an easy song to play. Problem is, that's my favorite song by them and fans kill it for some reason. I felt jipped each time. It's the only song by them I've spent time getting to know and the only song I really feel. Hearing fans do it makes me sad. If a band pulls people on stage, it should be to play a song that's not a major single or anything really popular by the band. Pick some random, but knowable song.

Pick some random, but knowable song.this is why i liked that Green Day used Knowledge. It is VERY easy - so easy that you could play it with Billie just showing it to you when you get on stage. (notice how he asked who could play guitar and didn't ask if they knew the song) It's also not a Green Day song so people don't have to worry about someone murdering a good Green Day song.
**nobodylikesyou** Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I think is great. Its what makes a live show well a live show.
NowhereBound Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I think it's a great way to interact with the crowd.
Guest Shangri-La Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 i lovvvvvvve it. Imagine hearing that thru in-ear monitors Dorie
Juan Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 it's pretty great, they do it for the fans, well, I like to believe so, and if taking knowledge off the setlist means that we get 15 minutes of whatever they feel like playing at any given moment, I'm up for it
GreenDay808 Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 i think it's awesome!its a great way to get fans REALLY into the show.no other band i know does it. i'm glad green day does it, i would totally love to be pulled up.some people can't sing, but its cool that they can go up there and not give a fuck about it.gives people confidence(:
colormestoopid Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 As a girl who got picked for JOS, I think them bringing fans up on stage is fucking brilliant. When you want to get connected with the crowd and let the audience know the message, "Hey look we're on this stage, but it doesn't mean were Greek Gods so COME HAVE SOME FUCKING FUN WITH US." what other way to do it then to give the fans a shot at the glory. Yeah some kids might fuck it up at times, but in the end the band knows they gave those kids a memory that will last a life time. and isn't that what a true memorable show is defined as? I'm pretty sure it is. If those memories are never forgotten, then you know they put on a damn good show.
Guest Hayley Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 It's great! I think the way they pull fans onstage like that really sets them apart from other bands, it totally destroys that barrier between band and audience in a way other bands as big as Green Day never come close to. I love that I can watch a video of an old performance in a tiny club from 1991 and see the audience crashing the stage and singing along, and then see them in a huge arena nearly twenty years later doing the same thing. Fabulous And I couldn't care less how good the lucky person is at singing. It's seeing them having fun that's enjoyable, not critiquing their singing skills.This.
Drew Holiday Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 So how much does a person sing when he/she gets called up, a verse, the chorus, a line or two?I wonder because I got floor seats In Orlando and I would not mind getting up there if he calls me.
Tripe Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 You all probably saw they brought back Knowledge last night in MSG for the second NYC show. I hope it stays for awhile, it gives the bass players and drummers a little chance to get onstage too. Also, BJ played JOS himself last night. I approve. So how much does a person sing when he/she gets called up, a verse, the chorus, a line or two?I wonder because I got floor seats In Orlando and I would not mind getting up there if he calls me.If it's Longview, three people split up the three verses. Seems like the second person gets the best part - after the verse, they get to sing "I got no motivation....etc." along with BJ into the mic. If you get called up during JOS (which may or may not be happening anymore) you sing the Dearly Beloved part. Good luck if you get up there!
Nova-Caine Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 i lovvvvvvve it. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww honey I didn't mean you, you were amazing :whistling:
SOMERTEN Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 Most people seem to love it I guess, which is fine by me if that's what people like. I still can't get my head round the fact it is all a bit American Idol and I am really not interested in listening to fans singing out of tune, I find it a bit corny. It's not a question of jealousy as someone mentioned. I have heard some people say they wouldn't get up there if they were picked. I hate the thought of somebody murdering JOS.
Netsirk Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 i'm not sure how i feel about it.i love seeing people get up there because it shows the more personal side of the band. when i see them interact with the audience in any way it makes me feel closer to them because you really see each of their personalities.the other night a girl went on stage and just started crying, Billie Joe hugged her and song the rest of the song with his arm around her while she just sobbed in his shoulder. i started tearing up because i know that's what i would probobly end up doing as well.true, sometimes i wish i could hear a song how its supposed to be, but since they do invite people up- that means that there's a chance i might be on that stage with them one day
annie Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 The only time I don't like it is when the people they bring up don't even know the damn words. I get so mad, its like wtf, you don't deserve to be up there.
mrwhirly2000 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 it's cool when they let someone sing a portion of JOS... but i'd be pissed to hear someone else sing all of longview
Sister of Grace Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 yeah I think its too much of it!! i aint paying to go see some kid sing for example lonview and totally fuck up the song I dont mind them bringing up ppl on stage but it was good during the AI tour..only one song.
g l o r i a Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Well being someone that got to go on stage.I loved the expirience.I'm not a shy person, but I also couldn't sing. And at that point, I don't think it matters, cause that song doesn't come until later in the setlist, and most of us would be screaming our hearts out, so by the time I got picked for longview, I was just so used to screaming the words that that's what I did. It's easily the awesomest expirience of my life.I'm glad they do it, it's really entertaining to see the happiness people go through when they're picked. I know at that very moment I was the happiest person alive.
