Here's a description and storyline of the video (and keep in mind that it is long):

Love. It's a four-letter word, but it's never as simple as it sounds. 'Love' could actually be lust. 'Love' could just be a false emotion used to fill a void in one's soul that couldn't otherwise be filled. Some people treat love seriously. They only use the word when it is truly meant. However, some people treat love like a game. They cheat and lie to attempt to win, but only lose everything they 'worked' for in the end.

Some people would say that the love between Jesus of Suburbia (or JOS for short) and Whatsername was never love, but rather lust. Some say that it was love at one time, but it eventually turned sour. Personally, I agree with the second theory. I believe that JOS and Whatsername had a pure love at first. But as time went on, and as JOS's alter ego - St. Jimmy - started to take over, the love withered away. I believe that Whatsername cared for JOS, but couldn't take his alter ego. So when it came down to a failing relationship or her pride... she walked away to protect herself from becoming more betrayed than she already was. That didn't mean that she didn't care about JOS. It just meant that she needed to look out for and take care of herself, and leaving JOS behind was the only way to do that.

I tried to make this video express my views of JOS and Whatsername's love, as well as following the storyline of American Idiot. This wasn't always easy, but I think I managed to complete the task reasonably well.

Storyline:

In the 1st verse and chorus, JOS is seen walking around the streets alone. The past few months have been a living hell for him. Whatsername has left JOS, and he hasn't seen her again. Part of him wants to leave the memories he has of her in the past, where they belong. But another part of him wants to relive the memories. JOS is desperately trying to block out the part of him that wants to remember the times they shared, but he isn't successful. Memories of a party that the two were once at keep coming into his mind at random times. Anything can trigger these memories. It could be a song playing on a vinyl record, a drink that once took away the pain and temporarily freed him from the gates of his own personal hell, or the name of a brand of cigarettes. JOS won't let anybody see him like this, so he walks into an employees only room at the local 7-11. That's when the memories gush out of the area of his mind where they were locked away for months. The memories are making him feel physically sick. Every memory of her - her hair, her eyes, her skin, her clothes - was driving him insane. He could even hear her voice, and this is what truly killed him inside. He couldn't block out the voice. Sure, he could try. He could scream until his lungs gave out. He could rip apart everything in sight. But the sound of her voice remained, and JOS couldn't take it. The pain he felt immersed him, and he couldn't escape.

In the 2nd verse and chorus, everything has now changed to Whatsername’s perspective. As she lies on some dark, quiet street in the city on a cold, unforgiving night, she is experiencing the same problem as JOS. She is trying to block out memories, and she is also failing. The memories that haunt her are the ones of the physical interaction that they shared. Every memory that she has of him holding her in his arms, brushing the hair from her face, and clinging to her both angers her and disgusts her. Part of her wishes that she hadn't meant him. Her life was already fucked up when she met him, and he didn't make things any easier. But another part of her knows that what happened wasn’t her fault, and the best thing to do is move on. But she doesn't know how she can move on when she feels the pain that she can't run away from. It's eating her alive, and she doesn't know how much more she can take.

In the middle of the song, both JOS and Whatsername have a flashback to one of the last times they ever saw each other. This wasn't a good memory, though. JOS yells at Whatsername and asks what she meant to him. He feels betrayed by her, even though he is the one who caused most of the damage in their relationship. Ironic, wouldn't you agree? Whatsername is honest about the answer she gives to JOS, but he hates the answer. So he tells her that he never loved her, and that she doesn't even get to be a memory. Then, he walks away from her, with pain and anger rushing through him. After this, the flashback is over, and it is once again the present day. JOS and Whatsername are both shown letting out their pain in various ways. For JOS, the pain is let out through a razorblade. For Whatsername, the pain is let out through alcohol.

In the end, both JOS and Whatsername have come to realize that what happens in the past needs to stay in the past, and that moving on may hurt at first, but the wounds will heal with time. JOS says his final goodbye to Whatsername by burning a photograph of the two together. Whatsername handles her final goodbye in a different way. She just keeps consuming alcohol.

Throughout the video, Green Day is shown performing.

In a lot of ways, this video was beneficial to make. It was my own personal way of saying my own goodbye to past memories and people. Yes, people have gone behind my back and hurt me. And yes, it was difficult to deal with. But making this helped with the letting go process.

I actually just put this on my YouTube account a little bit ago. I was going to post the link to the video earlier, but I had problems with WMG and their copyright laws. Ugh, I fucking hate Warner. :down: Anyways, I had to go through a copyright dispute thing. It was really stupid, but the video is now on my account with the audio.
