Juan Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Yeah, I know. But I mean you could have the same sized vocabulary as me & know a bunch of words I don't. And vice-versa. I'm not arguing that cool words aren't important. I get rather pissed off at how often people tell me to stop using "big words." Why not read a dictionary rather than stomp on my intelligence?that's called jealousy. i'm not gonna stop using big words, they're such an ego boost. Maybe I enjoy being intellectually condescending which makes me a douche. Ouch
Jessica Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 yeah, i didn't know what effigy meant...or petulance...
Soroush Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I know this thread is about words but what I really want to know is the meaning of "I beg to dream and differ from the hallow lies"
GDM Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I know this thread is about words but what I really want to know is the meaning of "I beg to dream and differ from the hallow lies"St. Soroush... I've been thinking of you after reading your thread about Iran. I hope things are well... or as well as they can be, at least. Also, I haven't been around here long, but maybe there's an AI song mean thread around here somewhere? The word that you wrote, "hallow" should be hollow, which has several meanings as an adjective (hollow modifies lies), –adjective1. having a space or cavity inside; not solid; empty: a hollow sphere.2. having a depression or concavity: a hollow surface.3. sunken, as the cheeks or eyes.4. (of sound) not resonant; dull, muffled, or deep: a hollow voice.5. without real or significant worth; meaningless: a hollow victory.6. insincere or false: hollow compliments.7. hungry; having an empty feeling: I feel absolutely hollow, so let's eat. I think this song line means that they demand to dream different dreams about how the world should live and that the lies of the establishment are false, empty, insincere, meaningless and ring untrue [hollow]. They are all lies. It fits into the theme of "Holiday," primarily, government lies. In the song's case, I think he was specifically talking about America and Iraq, but of course, when he sings the song in other countries, he always changes the "Representative from..." line to whatever country he's in at the time.... meaning that all establishments basically suck and lie. Usually the phrase is used as, "I beg to differ [fill in here what you object to or how your opinion differs]" For instance, if someone said to you that Green Day sucks, you could say, "I beg to differ with you, but Green Day is the greatest band in the world and you are a moron." Here Billie Joe changes it up and says "I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies." I beg to differ from your opinion, I'd rather dream different dreams from the empty lies...I hope this helps.Stay safe.
