Green Day Dictionary

This is a great topic. I actually know most of these words, but I have noticed that since I really started listening to Green Day a lot lately, I've been cursing more... haha... but maybe I'm setting a bad example for ya'll?

As to that lobotomy, there's a bad history behind lobotomies, which aren't used much (or at all) anymore. A lot of insane asylums would use them on troubled patients. You have to take an ice-pick like instrument and kind of jab it in the right spot, which then cuts off an emotional brain center. It's a bit like shock therapy was... a new technique in psychotherapy that damaged a lot of people who didn't necessarily need the procedure.

One of the reasons why Beyond the Lobotomy resonates so much with me, is that the procedure itself is so horrid, that every time I hear the song, I can't help but think of how a lobotomy is done... Particularly, as Wikipedia notes, that they were performed a lot on people who had "youthful defiance," among other issues like schizophrenia and clinical depression.

EEK....

They were used mainly on children with ADHD and women diagnosed with "hysteria", a way of keeping them subservient to their husbands. I had to watch a documentary about the procedure in one of my psych classes a few years ago and they showed close-ups of how they are done. I seriously almost threw up.

Since they don't do them anymore they've replaced them with shock therapy, which is almost just as awful. My paranoid-schizophrenic uncle had it done 6 years ago and went crazy.

These days, instead of saying, "I don't know", I just say, "Dunno".

I've been watching/listening/reading way to many interviews with Billie Joe.

^You learnt "dunno" from Billie....?

I learnt it from the GDC :shifty: This and other words.

edit: LOL @ your sig!

Well as much as Billie's a great writer, his use of intricate and complex wording is nothing compared to Greg Graffin and Mr. Brett, just sayin'

check this out for doubts BR lexicon

oh. okay...so thats why the dictionary says it's a procedure rarely used...

AH! I so learned about lobotomy in my Psych class today! :D

Oh, and this procedure was mainly used in the 1940s, I don't think they do that anymore...?

Oh my God, I love this thread!!!! >.< "malakite" has been torturing me for years!!!!! I couldn't find it anywhere cuz of the way it was spelled, so I just assumed it didnt mean anything and gave up! But I should have thought of that, that they spelled it wrong and they meant "malachite," cuz they spelled "affection" wrong, too, and that got me as well (but not for as long, haha.) Malakite was driving me insane, thanks so much, guys!!!

I learned the phrase "eating crow" from them, and "farfisa" (haha, cuz Mike played it and I wanted to know what it was), barrio, masochist, umm......dozens of others i'll prolly come up with later.

God bless Green Day for their educational big words. xD Haha.

EDIT: Oh, and martyr, vigilante, asphyxiating

And the new album has given me dozens of words to learn that I have yet to look up. xD

This is what I love about Green Day. I'm not going to lie, I have a pretty good vocabulary. I'm actually shocked quite often by people who don't know words that seem second nature to me. So having such a solid base of new words from a band I love is exciting. It proves that I can really learn from them. And that a high school degree is not necessary for intelligence.

The only word they taught me is one that doesn't really exist that they made up, "sleazing". I like this word

Oh my god you're right, I see it's in an online dictionary. Well I'd never heard it before and looked it up in a real dictionary ages ago, it wasn't there. Maybe it's been accepted as a word and added to the dictionary now.

Aww I quite liked the idea it was made up :(. Never heard anyone say it though, must be a US thing.

They actually taught me the word Minority. I can remember asking my Mum what a Minority was one day. Other words they taught me are Lobotomy, Sassafrass and Genocide are ones that I can remember now. And wow, that Malakite thing has been annoying me forever, but really, its genius! I could never come up with something like that.

Oh, I forgot jaded, subservient, 409 (had to learn what it was xD), lot lizard (haha), the phrase "wish in one hand shit in the other," cartel, rat race, maladjusted.....I'm gonna be remembering new ones all night!

ooohh i forgot about lot lizard! When i was 15 i was at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere in northern california with my friend and she pointed out that a lot of the trucks had the same lizard sticker on their bumpers.. that was when i put two and two together and realized it was a sign they were looking to pick up prostitutes, or "lot lizards". creepy.

it reminds me of 'a quick one while he's away'.

Oh yeah, just like he's slumming around where he lives is how I see it. The way he phrases it "sleazing my backyard" just makes me think of some kind of gardening method though, ha :P

I had to learn what salud meant, which took me forever cuz silly me didn't even know it was Spanish. xD And conscientious objector was a big one for me, I asked my mom and she said it's kind of an insult, so I had to look it up. And of course I learned about meth and masturbation thanks to the boys. Haha.
