The Static Age

I just now started getting into this song. I don't really know why I didn't like it before, I guess I never gave it the time of day, so to say. I always skipped it whenever it came across my ipod. And now, I can't stop listening to this! I guess I listened to it once, and was like 'Eh' And soo I gave it another try and well, It's one of my favorite songs off of this album now.

As a lot of other people stated before, these lyrics are just really really amazing:

All I want to know

Is a God-damned thing

Not what's in the medicine

All I want to do is

I want to breathe

Batteries are not included

What's the latest way that a man can die

Screaming hallelujah?

Singing out "The dawn's early light"

The silence of the rotten, forgotten

Screaming at you.

I'm addicted to this song. His voice is just so intense, and the lyrics definitely are some of Billie's best songwriting.

I feel like this song both mirrors and comments on Springsteen's 'Born to Run', musically and lyrically - onstage, Billie Joe and Jason = Bruce and Clarence. There's similarity and contrast in the lyrical sense of the songs - Springsteen's is all romance, lovers fleeing to 'that place where we really want to go, and we'll walk in the sun', Static Age is 'all I want to know is a goddamn thing.... all I want to do is I want to breathe'. The contrast is not only in the title 'Run' versus 'Static', but also in what you can feel in the music - 'Born to Run' is engines-roaring, let's get the fuck out of this place before it takes us - Static Age is contained, wheels spinning, gridlocked. Born to Run is in love with a world of heroes trying to find their place - the delirious swoon of 'beyond the palace, hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard/ girls comb their hair in the rearview mirror and the boys try to look so hard', Springsteen's beautiful, pulp-fiction language. Static Age is a claustrophobic, nightmare mindfuck, no romance, no way out, nowhere to run. Born to Run has the core of you and me against the world, and we're gonna make it - Static Age is a drowning soul, alone, beleaguered, nothing resonating, nothing beckoning on the horizon.

Wow...can't believe I didn't see this 'til just now. Love your contrasting of the two songs. "Born To Run" is filled with hope and optimism (and testosterone, I think!). "Static Age" = Hopelessness. We're stuck in it, it's all around us, there's no way out of this hellhole.

in my opinion the lyrics are fucking great, I used this song for a work-school about the media manipulation

This has to be one of the strongest tracks on the album, the drum intro, the bass riff and the guitar on top flow together and Billie's songwriting talent really comes out here.

"Conscience on a cross and your hearts in a vice,

squeezing out your state of mind."

I love that part. :D

The first time I listen to it, I found the chorus very similar with "Church on Sunday".

It's not one of my favourites, but I like this song too. :)

If this song doesn't get made into a single, I swear, puppies will start falling from the sky or something

May I put this in my sig? That's just hilarious. XDD
