blank_space Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 This was one of my favourites from the beginning. When the key changes, and the high backing vocals kick in? Stunning. And it's got the lyrics to boost it even higher. 'What's the latest way that a man can die? Screaming hallelujah.' Chills. That entire verse, I honestly think is one of the best tunes they've ever created (Your mileage may vary.)
Anja Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Doesn anyone know what exactly he means when he´s saying "Batteries are not included" after singing "All I want to do is I want to breathe"?I love that part of the song and it makes me shiver.

I don't know for sure what it means, but my interpretation has been that he's kind of saying that he doesn't want to have to pay to breathe i.e needing batteries be able to use the air. That may be completely wrong, but as i say, that's how i've interpreted it. I thought it could be because paying for the air that we breathe is something that has become quite plausible in the modern age.
Anja Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 I thought so, too. It just didn´t make completely sense to me in the first place. But I guess that´s a good way to look at it, that air has become something rare but still, you don´t want to have to use batteries in order to be able to breathe.I just found another line that doesn´t make sense to me but more gramatically: "Tragic a la madness and concrete". I thought "concrete" is a verb that´s why it doesn´t quite make sense to me. Or maybe I´m/my english is just dumb

That's actually the first time i've known what those words are. I couldn't make them out listening to the song, as i haven't read the lyrics yet(!)I don't think 'concrete' is a verb though. I interpret that as another word 'solid.' i.e if you say something is concrete, it means it can't change. In this case, i guess it means a 'permanent tragedy' perhaps?
CoreyGregory Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 best song on the album along side with horseshoes and hand grenades!
Clayish Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Doesn anyone know what exactly he means when he´s saying "Batteries are not included" after singing "All I want to do is I want to breathe"?I love that part of the song and it makes me shiver. He means I dont need technology or electronics to breathe.Just let me live my life they way I want, I dont need all this technology is pretty much what he is saying.

Pati. Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 If this song was a person, I'd marry it.This.I love everything about it.
Penguin Puffball Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 THIS IS MY FAVORITE FUCKING SONG ON THIS ALBUM!!!!! The whole song feels really powerful and overwhelming to me, especially in the last verse when Billie does the key change and it seems so much bigger...I don't know, I can't really explain it.This is an awesome song to listen to when you're iPod, or whatever you use, is up at full volume. It adds to the experience.

Aaah! so powerful!! oh and "Music to my nervous system" i love that one too!!
Modern Zero. Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 This is one of my absolute FAVORITE songs on the album. I just love the whole "o" thing with the "video, radio, stereo" And then my favorite part is when it builds up in the middle and the key changes. The part where Billie sings, "All I wanna know is a goddamn thing, not what's in the medicine" And then lines "The silence of the rotten, forgotten" Just this whole verse is so fucking epic: All I want to knowIs a God-damned thingNot what's in the medicineAll I want to do isI want to breatheBatteries are not includedWhat's the latest way that a man can dieScreaming hallelujah?Singing out "The dawn's early light"The silence of the rotten, forgottenScreaming at you.I think one of the main reasons why I love this song besides the lyrics is that it's just so damn powerful and epic. I think it's even more powerful and bold than Know Your Enemy.

It adds to the experience. The part that nails me is right at the end:What's the latest way that a man can die? (BJA presents the question: how are we destroying ourselves today?)Screaming halleluyah! (the answer: by pursuing religiously-fueled wars, self-righteously imposing fanatical views on anyone who disagrees with them, or hiding behind blind, unquestioning faith to shield ourselves from the horrors of the modern world -- "just take the medicine and everything will be alright...")Singing out "The dawn's early light" (Which can also equate to blind-faith patriotism: "Ohhhh say can you seeee....!!")Silence of the rotten, forgotten (The casualties of the raging culture wars and armed conflicts that result from this -- the soldiers of those wars dead, buried, and decomposing -- give 'em the 21-gun salute and forget about them!)Screaming at you (from the grave, at those who are willing to see the truth behind the lies, all the while the media consumes itself with bullshit.)Incredible, incredible lyrics.
Kimpsu Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 I love Static Age, but it's more powerful live than on the album. If studio version was little faster, this would really be one of the greatest song they've ever made. Now it's just good on album, and awesome live. Love the lyrics.

I hadn't looked at it that way before. I totally agree with you, that part is like the ultimate point on the album for me. It really does grab you emotionally! This is my go to song on 21CB. I've loved it since pretty much day 1. And it comes right after H&H!!
Anja Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 I also had problems with understanding this line ...you're from Germany right? cause.. I thought it means "betonieren" and that doesn't make sense at all :/As we already noticed yesterday, yes Meinst du "concrete" bedeudet "betonieren"?

Or maybe I´m/my english is just dumb I'm still trying to figure out that one, and the verse immediately following, "Coca-cola execution". I know there's something big and deep in there, I just need time to dig a little harder for it.
bjrules Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 One of my favs from the album. It's really powerful. Great interpretation of those lyrics, I never saw it that way before.

g l o r i a Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 this song is fucking perfect.definitely should be the next single.
