it's like punchbag time right after "Know Your Enemy" and it goes dudududududududu (but it sounds more proffesional than dududududu)

This song, both musically and lyrically, is just genius. The orchestra chiming in at the perfect times, Billie hitting those high notes - everything flows so BEAUTIFULLY.

And the lyrics - this song ties the entire album together. I love how the whole "Know Your Enemy" slogan starts out in the CD as being riotous and against things like the government or the media, and then in this song, when he repeats the line "know your enemy" it's like realizing that "the Enemy" has been you all along. It's more about fighting inner demons now than fighting outsiders. I find that fascinating, and in right around Viva La Gloria (Little Girl) and RHS, the CD took a much darker turn, in my opinion.

Billie is an incredible, incredible songwriter. It is so clear that he put so much effort and thought into this album. This is an all-time high for his writing, it's brilliant. There are a million things I could say about how greatly written this song is, but the example I mentioned really stood out for me.

^ Yes I find the reiteration of 'Know Your Enemy' in the song is genius. It gives me tingles as it then bursts into that insane heavy guitar riff.

I doubt this song will become a single... but it's definitely an underrated song off this album. I'm kind of obsessed with it right now.

*sniff* now i can't relate to it anymore!

I fucking love this song. For some reason, the way the piano part in the beginning merges in with the first verse reminded me slightly of Led Zepplin's 'Dream On'. I love the lyrics and even though I know it's about pill addiction, it reminds me of relationships. Love love love it!

This is a song that I;ve been singing a lot of at work. Everyone at my work knows almost the entire lyrics to this song because I've been singing it soo much! My bodd actually asked to borrow my copy of 21st Century Breakdown and this was her favourite song.

This is my favorite off of 21CB. I just cannot deny this song. Truly amazing.

It should be a single, but since it's not getting played live, I kinda doubt it. Which is depressing. I agree with you guys - it's very BOBD-like, and with the line 'Know your enemy,' it connects so well. I really, really, REALLY want it to be a single.

this song is one of my favorites now. i didn't like it at first (idk why) but now i love it! :)

it kinda reminds me of BLVD. OF BROKEN DREAMS. the ending. they are both slow songs, then get heavy at the ending.....i like it!

i still think this song should have been on the setlists.

If I have to be completely honest, this is my least favorite Green Day song, and it really dragged the album down for me. A lot of people really liked it and I respect that, but to me it just seemed like a duller version of Boulevard of Broken Dreams and I felt the lyrics were a bit general and lacking direction. Like I said though, I respect people who choose to like this song.

People here have very different meanings about this song

^I joined when we talked about it earlier.

I listened to this song a few hours ago, and I agree on how perfect Billie's falsetto is. Holy fuck. The man can sing. And the music is amazing. I get goosebumps too! Especially at my favorite part, the "Know your enemy" part. I love the guitar that follows. It's so amazing.

I still think this would make an insanely great single.

I love the lyrics to this song, and I get chills when Billie sings "so what ails you, is what impales you" in the falsetto, but I usually skip this song. I just don't like the music on the song, and I don't know why. I don't hate it, but I agree with what others said about it bringing the album down.
