Know Your Enemy-Classic Green Day?

Not really. The music, maybe, but the lyrics sound like it was the first song Billie ever wrote, which is kinda disappointing in a sense. The older stuff had better lyrics.

I think KYE is a typical American Idiot song, and it's the song I like the least of 21CB, along with Horseshoes and Handgrenades

Jesus, what's with all the KYE hate. I really like it. Jase will kill me but it sounds like The Clash. Take it in the context of the other songs. Every album needs its singalong stomper.

Quoted For Truth. <3

Seriously, I don't know why no one likes it. It's so fucking catchy. And I love the sound of the guitar. Plus it's a bit of light relief from all the deep experimental stuff (which I also love, don't get me wrong.)

What's with everybody hating Know Your Enemy? I actually really like the song. When I first heard it I was like "What the hell is this shit?" but after listyening to it a few times it grew on me. I suppose the music could have came from Dookie or Insominac but the lyrics are definitely modern Green Day. Even so, I think that East Jesus Nowhere or 21st Century Breakdown might have been better singles. I think that 21 Guns is the best song on the album,so I'm happy with that being a single

oops, double post. My bad.

Well it's true. Know our enemy is crap, and well their previous work isn't.

Is it really?

While I don't really listen to it that much (because I can see it on TV or the radio, the other songs I can't) I still think it's a good song.

It's a rocker.

think about it, if you've never heard Green Day before, and right now you're 13, you hear this song, you think it's awesome, it grabs your attention, so you look up Green Day and discover all their other amazing music!

Lights Out sounds more like a Dookie outtake than KYE...

Lights sounds like something off of Nimrod. And KYE is not "classic Green Day" it new Green Day, if it were off Dookie the word "masturbation, or something of the sort" would be in the song. Like....

Masturbation is an Energy against the enemy, well masturbation in an energy right here.

When I bought the album, it was my least listened to track. Now I find myself listening to it alot. It's a really great, fun and energetic song.

I seriously have no clue why the majority of you poofs seem to hate Know Your Enemy ... It's one of my favourite songs off 21CB.

Know Your Enemy is a fantastic song

I was about to say out of all the 21st CB songs, Know Your Enemy would come closest to fitting on an older album. But then I realised there's quite a few that would fit on other albums, well elements of them would at least. There was a quote from Mike, something about this being the most "Green Day influenced Green Day album", and I think that's very true.

Hmm musically I could easily see Know Your Enemy on an older album, but I'd say lyrically it comes from a different kind of perspective so not so much. Wouldn't be out of place on Warning though.

Yeah, that is definentely true. You can hear lots of different elements from a few other albums on 21st CB, especially Warning and American Idiot. In a way, I kind of think that 21st CB sounds like a better, more enhanced version of Warning.

If I was unaware as to Green Day's work and heard Know your enemy, and then was told it's like their older stuff, I'd be put off of the Green Day back catalogue for life.

I dont mind KYE its not that bad of a song it just gets annoying ot hear it so much.

Fucking hell...KYE haters, its such an awesome song.

Lights Out is Dookie/Insomniac all over.

Horseshoes is very old school Green Day. Thats gotta be one of there most punk sounding songs.

Yeah I gotta disagree as well. KYE definitely struck me as almost a whole new sound for the guys. More of the pop punk stadium sounding stuff, not so much the California punk stuff off of Dookie or Insomniac. I would say the old sounding songs on the album in my mind are Lights Out, parts of Static Age, parts of American Eulogy, the chorus of Christian's Inferno, and Murder City sounds like it belongs on American Idiot. Also for some reason, Before the Lobotomy sort of reminds of the style they used to write in for 1039 and Kerplunk. Especially at the end when they kick back into the ballad part only electric. Maybe it's just me, I dunno. Horseshoes sort of reminds me of some older stuff, but the vocal distortion sort of throws me off when naming it an "old sounding song".

Horseshoes and Handgrenades fucking rocks!

This topic fucking sucks.

Woo! Punk Rawk! I agree with that statement.

Personally I love Know Your Enemy. It's repetetive but catchy. The guitar is to die for and when Billie screams "Give me revolution" it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. As for Hoseshoes and Hangrenades i think it sounds like Nimrod crossed with the Foxboro Hot Tubs. Lights Out sounds more like it could have come from Nimrod or Shenanigans.

definitely not. the song pretty much sucks. It's repetitive..we all know billie can write better than that. It's not the worst..but not the greatest.

Posted

I quite like KYE, but it's too repetitive to listen to it too often. Uhm... well, I don't think it sounds like classic Green Day and I definitely can't imagine it on Dookie or Nimrod.

Posted

Yay for more people declaring their love for KYE

It's now my most played song on iTunes. That may be because it's the first new Green Day song I heard since Working Class Hero, but still. I would still listen to it on repeat. I never get bored of it.

i really doubt it. if they'd written it that long ago, it probably would have ended up on shenanigans. i also think it coincides too well w/the theme of 21cb to have been written so long before the rest of the album. even tho this song has more simplistic lyrics like most of green day's earlier works, it doesn't sound like something that the boys would have written when they were younger and less mature.

Exactly the same. I was thinking earlier today how Know Your Enemy could be off American Idiot. Obviously this song is not dookie/Insomniac lyrically. If the song was sped up I could see it maybe fitting in on one of those albums. Actaully the "insurgency will rise" part would sorta sound like "I must insist on being a pessimist" (Armatage Shanks, Insomniac) if it were to be sped up. I do agree with it being a good single, because it doesn't ruin the song for me. Hopefully 21st Century Breakdown won't be a single like Jesus of Suburbia was. These songs are just too long to be singles!!
