Nova-Caine Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 For me the Berlin Wall coming down is the most significant piece of history and had the most impact on me personally. It was the turning point for me at 17 watching that unfold on my tv screen, I remember how I felt to this day that if those people could overcome all those years of oppression and dictatorship it should be a lesson to us all as to how to approach life.
justcause Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 [Replying to 'justcause' date='Jun 8 2009, 10:58 AM]From this, I find another possible interpretation of the lyrics and the characters: Gloria is not just light, Gloria is freedom it/herself, and that freedom has been blasted "in graffiti on the walls" (literally, the Berlin Wall), from time to time throughout history. That freedom, that life-force energy, has also been co-opted and misused throughout history by heroes, cons, and charlatans. We find ourselves today having gone from the era of humility to the era of arrogance, and after so many wasted years of the deaf-mute misleading the choir, the lesson we can draw from this is: Gloria's freedom misused (or in your words, what happens when you "piss off an angel") is that this angel becomes Christian's inferno. The two characters are, as you observe, "inseparable" and "opposite points of a single compass" -- perhaps in yet another way that I don't think we've described in quite this way yet. Thanks again for the inspiration!I really like your interpretation, and I think it is another aspect of Gloria - she's multi-faceted, so much so that I re-wrote that paragraph on the song again and again. I think she speaks to everyone in different ways, lights up different places, and all of them are aspects of her, including freedom and what it means - like, is it just 'the freedom to obey'? There are also different instances and aspects to 'the choir' - it can be 'the choir infantry', like Gloria's angel chorus, joining with her and spurring her on. In 'Little Girl', she's 'just a junkie preaching to the choir', because she's lost her belief in herself. All that is good can prosper if we not only support it, but believe in it - find in ourselves the place where Gloria is.
gdpunkdude Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 wow, i've never called an album review beautiful before but i'm saying it right now. i've never seen anyone interpret an album w/such feeling and precision. u should get that thing published in a magazine or newspaper cuz that's some really good writing there!
Bryn Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 That was absolutely incredible. So much to say, and it was written in such a eloquent fashion. I loved reading it.
