Green Day lashes out at Wal-Mart policy

I really don't see why Wal-Mart had to do this... I don't know much about Wal-Mart, 'cause I'm from the UK, but apparently they sell guns. So I think the question needing to be asked is "What's worse - Swearing or murder?"

I personally don't think there last two CD deserved a warning labels anyway they are quite tame

The song Horseshoes and Handgrenades alone probably did it for this one

They're selling the CD at WalMart's here. So it's just in the US & UK that they're not selling them then?

It was $16.95!

I don't understand why they won't sell this one, but they'll sell all their previous CDs (well...Nimrod, AI, BIAB & International Superhits are the only CDs I've ever seen them selling).

Wal-mart thought they could push Green Day around, ARE they out of their minds.

Lots of business lost when they did that. Just by the sells of the cd's and people would have probably bought more stuff, anyway

they're no authority. Like they think they are going to play God or authority and set the guidelines for all to live by.

What a punishment we can't buy our music from them, are they NUTSZZZ.

Bye bye, take it elsewhere.

Green Day Ruleszzz here , haha

I am glad they stood up to Wal-Mart, but I would not expect anything else.

When I really started buying all the Green Day stuff I was in Wal-Mart, and thought I would go back and grab what they had. SO I got three CDs. This was in the American Idiot era, and I thought "Wow, no American Idiot. Gee that is a surprise." Sarcasm.

Anyway, when I was checking out up front I was talking to the cashier and I asked if they were not selling American Idiot. She said no they would not sell it. I then proceeded to buy the CDs and told her "Well, I find that slightly ridiculous as I am buying Green Day CDs right now and they have "bad language" in them too. Seems stupid to me to sell all the others but not one just because you don't agree with what it says."

The cashier was pretty much struck silent.

Anyway that was long...but the point is that is is stupid to sell all the others and censor a few.

Heh, I'm glad they held their ground and wouldn't let Wal-Mart change their music by censoring it. I mean, what's the harm in a few swears?

I don't think,. in all honesty, it is the swearing.

They sell all the other Green Day CDs, except America Idiot. Those have swearing on them .

Personally I think it is political. Little Right Wing Christian Wal-Mart can not be seen selling albums that go against the Right-Wing.

They do not like the message, so they don't sell it.

My opinion.

This is a nice, hefty kick in the balls for those money-sucking parasites of WalMart. Nice work, boys. Love y'all.

that's what punk is for me.

I wondered why I didn't see any copies there

I compleatly agree with their decision to tell wal-mart to fuck off.

I wonder if Wal-Mart forgot that this is America, and we have freedom of speech here...? WTF?

I think they think they own the deed to the planet. It's the only explanation.

My mother actually called me up today to ask me if I had heard that Wal-Mart (saying the word like it's some fucking shopping-god-utopia-authority or something like that) is refusing to sell the CD. I think she was sorta happy about it, like I was gonna agree with her and say, 'Oh yeah, mom, it is a really bad thing, and they shouldn't sell it because they say all kinds of bad words!' I think my mother needs to put a little 'fuck' in her vocabulary, and she'd be less judgmental. Hey mom, did you hear them say sodomy, huh?? Lemme play it for you... Jeez - I'm gonna be 40 years old, and I still let my mother's opinions piss me off, lol.

This has been bothering me so much every time I see a comment about it, I had to reply to this blog that popped up on Google.

Not sure if my reply will show up until it's approved.

This popped up on a Google alert, and it’s been bugging me so much that I just have to reply.

I’m sure that every PG-13 or R-rated movie Wal-Mart carries is censored for “dirty words” then. What about books, too?? And oh, there might be some foul language in a magazine…ooooh. That is exactly why this CD is not being sold at Wal-Mart. Dirty words. They’ve got to be kidding. I wonder who actually sits down and makes these decisions and what year he/she thinks we are living in?

Green Day and their record company applied a Parental Advisement label on the front of 21st Century Breakdown (as they’ve done in the past with other CDs), so that a parent can make the decision whether to buy it or not and allow thier child to listen to the “dirty words” or not. Is it not the responsibility of the parental figure to ‘parent’?? Why do we leave our responsibilities to some corporate or governmental authority?

I don’t think you should give Wal-Mart any thanks or any points for censoring a piece of art. And a damn good one, too. I think they epically lose for not selling this album - this is America, and I think sometimes we all forget that.

Apparently, it's Wal-Mart policy not to sell CD's that have a parental advisory sticker on the front. If the purpose of these stickers is to separate 'adult' albums from more innocent ones, you have to wonder why Wal-Mart don't use them. What's the point in having a system to flag up 'adult' CD's if you're not going to use it, but ignore it instead ? Obviously, they can't trust their customers to make their own decisions.

What an annoying blog, they even mention the fact that they sell movies containing bad language, and still don't see the hypocrisy of it. Great reply, hear hear! Hmm wonder if they have the guts to post up a reply that totally destroys their argument?

I will never set foot in a walmart with their anti union and anti benefit policies plus the minimal wage they pay out to their workers while the corporation is raking in the money

If you support Wal-Mart, go to hell. Do you think that Billie Joe would say "whatever" and let them edit the fuck out of a perfectly fine CD? NO. At least he took a stand and refused something that he thought was wrong.

Be a nonconformist. It's good.

Thanks Hermione. I rarely feel the need to be so outspoken, lol, but I just had to. No reply yet that I can see.

That's a great comment! I'd really like to see them reply, but it's doubtful :/

Email Walmart and thank them for their stand.

I disagree. However, I do think I will email them. :shifty:

I think e-mailing them is a good idea.

They are hypocritical.

They carry South Park, the show that brought us the confetti queef, I am pretty sure I saw Team America there too. I know they carry the South Park movie.

It is not the swear words. It is the message they hate.

I am going to write them and e-mail them.

When I have a bit of extra money I am going to start shopping at Target for my groceries. They are more pricey, and that is another thing that irritates me.

Although if I shop at Aldie's and Target I bet I could pull that off.

Plus Target has lots more Vegetarian food.

The one thing is I want to buy all the shit at Wal-Mart that should be censored...if that makes sense. Which it probably doesn't. I just woke up.

Well, that's the hypocrisy of America. It's all over.

I agree that all their CDs' "explicit content" pales in comparison to some of the other products sold at Wal-Mart. And when a corporation sets itself up to be the conscience for its customers, that's the kind of paradoxical situation it will usually get into.

LOVE your ava - and that movie :).

If 21st Century Breakdown isn't as successful as American Idiot, we know who to blame. Though it might not be a successful anyway buy I like to be optimistic

I dont even live in America but it must be a downer to go out there looking to buy the album and finding they dont have it in stock because of some ridiculous policy, which they are being hypocrites and going against themselves. I mean from the previous post by Bryn, they sell South Park and Team America? Whats with that?
