rootbeersoup Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 And as far as soldier goes, I don't think it's a literal meaning... It's more of a medaphor in my opinion, like soldiers march etc, like march foward, cause you're the new society... Okay, I don't think that made a whole load of sence, but it's kind of hard to explain. lol.Pretty much what I was trying to say. A soldier, meaning an obedient person.
Vanessa Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 I'm pretty sure the soldier part is saying how people today are the ones who are kind of fighting for more equality. Like it's up to today's generation to change things.

Like it's up to today's generation to change things.I would agree with that if the line was the song in itself. However, in context, the previous 2 lines (and the rest of the song's lyrics) do not make that line sound very motivational, as if it were coming from some revolutionary leader. It sounds like it's coming from an oppressive form of leadership, giving a message that social division and inequality is the way of the future. The lyrics for this song, as a whole, are very cynical, and definitely does not sound like it would be some guy preaching to the people about changing things. And I don't see how that one line would be any exception.
Greenday_Aussie Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Wow, reading this thread, this shits pretty deep.Did we ever have discussions like this about AI songs, I dont think there were many as deep as this!

To fully understand the meaning behind music, you have to completely immerse yourself in it.
chickin'pickin' Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 I highly doubt anyone in Green Day is racist.Billie Joe will become the leader (fuhrer) of the new third reich, just you wait.It could be called....wait for it.... the fourth reich!
Tiffx Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 He's being sarcastic?Yeah I think the whole song has a sarcastic and cynical element to it.
Trotsky Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 The term "soldier" is nothing more than a synonym. It's not meant to be taken in a literal senseNo I think it's from the same perspective as the voice in a song like "Holiday", he's playing the role of someone who wants all of the youth out there to be cannon fodder for their wars.
Kimpsu Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 I like that BJ's lyrics can be understood in many ways. More I'm scared cause EJN's riff is almost straight copy from Marilyn Manson's Disposable Teens :/ I don't care, but GD really don't need another plagiarizing discussion like people had with Wonderwall and BOBD.
Katarina. Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 What I think it means is how in society, white males have always been dominant. White males have always dominated any other race/gender/etc. Black people, are of course criticized due to their skin color along with women because they're "weaker", thus "sit down-all the black girls" as if their opinion truly means nothing. It's a bit hard to explain, but I think he's kind of mocking how pathetic society is. Idk, that's what I got from it. I'm not sure if I just made any sense. XDThat's the same as I was thinking.. and you made perfectly sense to me.
Trotsky Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 One conclusion I think we can all draw is that Green Day are not racists in any way.

XDyeah thats what i got...that white men are the dominant race and he's put it i think that white men should stand up cos people think white people and men are dominant, and then he goes to the oppposite of it it so sit down opposed to stand up and black and girls, so the line is a complete opposite of the first...well thats what it seems like anyway. I don't think its meant racist...i dunno i can't really explain want i mean...

It seems like a lot of people are having trouble articulating what they feel about some of these lyrics lol I've noticed that in this thread and in the other one. I am, too, honestly. I'm having mixed emotions. But I'm sitting here, listening to When i Come Around, getting excited all over again because we've got some powerful new music coming. Powerful because he put his heart into it, as he always does, and I know for a fact they're not racists... it's nice to read lyrics, or anything, that makes you think, that sparks debate.
chatnoir Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 The last line is no reference to war. It's a reference to society.Pretty much what I was trying to say. A soldier, meaning an obedient person. My first impression was, that it actually is a referrence to American soldiers being abused by the last government ("missionary politicians"), who was partly driven by religious ideas to fight some sort of holy war. There are all those military images: The testifying, the dying ("suicide") and later on the uniform and the cops of a new religion. But it could be all only metaphores as well. The situation described in the first chapter reminds also a bit of the situation in a classroom, I think. Isn't there this ritual in U.S. schools, that the students have to worship the flag or something? Does this include hand raising and testifying or something like that? And the standing up and sitting down sounds like something happening in a classroom, too.I am so curious to hear the music to those lyrics!
Star.Trekker Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 What is this lyric taken from 'East Jesus Knowhere' all about?Stand up! - All the white boys Sit down! - All the black girls I just dont know what its about. Any ideas?
Guest Shangri-La Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 There's already a thread about this...READ BETWEEN THE LINES

Guest 16PaperLanterns Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 It's supposed to show racism and sexism in religious institutions.

wwnflat_punk Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 The lyrics are pretty deep, you have to listen to it many times to get an idea. I think Billie's commenting on racism in America and how it's up to everyone regardless of race to make a difference (you're the soldiers of the new world). To me this is a big protest song about religion and society and it may relate to the Class of '13 , how they can change the world.
