AndrewSon Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 you are all missing the best similarity, Foxboro Hot Tubs Pieces of Truth and Horseshoes and Handgranades!!!!
MusicalDeviant Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 If anything, it could be them throwing in those little hints of the past to reward those who are long time listeners. Green Day hasn't forgotten the good ol' days, nor where they came from.Maybe these similarities are intentional. :/
Sanity Loan Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 With Green Day's style, it's kinda hard to come up with something new and creative considering that this is their 9th album. But it's GREAT even if it sounds like their other stuff. Who cares?? ITS STILL AMAZING
Sara Armstrong Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 there's certain riffs in one of the songs that makes it sound like "misery" and then later on in that song some of it sounds like "blood sex & booze".i don't remember which song it is, but w/e.
*Jade_Green_Day* Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 The start of the chorus of 21 Guns sounds a bit like Weezer's chorus of Beverley Hills. Not complaing though, I still love it. It's been in my head all day!
BigYellowTaxi Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 There was one song that Reminded me of The Network. It was Cristian's Inferno. It was weird. At first I though that The Network was a guest until I figured out that Green Day was The Network.
TheMinority16 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 And is this a problem? Hell no. Green Day IS GREEN DAY. So they are what they were and they are what they are, so live with it and love the new album.
Seedless_Reject Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I think I know what you mean, and yeah, I heard that too. I like it me too. XD
.Brian Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 If you listen closely to the drums in LotAG, they are almost the same as the drums at the beginning of Whatsername. I especially noticed this one when they were playing it live.well, this drum beat isn't very special :wink:it's the 'standard' drum beat. it's used in thousands of songs.
GTI Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 The start of the chorus of 21 Guns sounds a bit like Weezer's chorus of Beverley Hills. Not complaing though, I still love it. It's been in my head all day! They just played 21 Guns during the commercial break on the Lakers-Rockets game and I thought it was Beverly Hills at first as well lol
Snorri Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I was just listening to ¿VLG? and the chorus sounds a lot like some song by Green Day but I can't remember which one Does anyone know ? It's killing me !
TheMinority16 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I was just listening to ¿VLG? and the chorus sounds a lot like some song by Green Day but I can't remember which one Does anyone know ? It's killing me !LETTERBOMB! o wait !VLG! sounds like letterbombMISERY! sounds like ?VLG?
Fuzz Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 In the words of Mike Dirnt "This is the most Green Day-inspired album"
.Brian Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 In the words of Mike Dirnt "This is the most Green Day-inspired album"amen.
Boston Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I was just listening to ¿VLG? and the chorus sounds a lot like some song by Green Day but I can't remember which one Does anyone know ? It's killing me !Misery and ¿Viva La Gloria? sound almost exactly the same.
Peel Slowly And See Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 They call back to three songs on Warning:, but then again The Who never shied away from being self-referential.
Snorri Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Misery and ¿Viva La Gloria? sound almost exactly the same.I'm not sure that's what I'm thinking of but you're probably right P.S. Wow, I was just listening to American Eulogy and at 3:12, it sounds EXACTLY like 0:36 of Christian's Inferno !!! EXACTLY !!!
tq6993 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I'm not sure that's what I'm thinking of but you're probably right P.S. Wow, I was just listening to American Eulogy and at 3:12, it sounds EXACTLY like 0:36 of Christian's Inferno !!! EXACTLY !!! after i read this post i went and listened to both and your right! "Like a flood" from Christian's Inferno is the same as "Fuckin lies" from American Eulogy! i dont really care if certain songs sound the same. cuz to be honest i think the songs on 21stCB are better than the songs they borrowed from. i like Church On Sunday, but i like Static Age better. and as for Too Much too Soon, that was a B-side so its not an Official type GD song so id say its fair game to re-hash, alter, or borrow elements from. EDIY: "From the river to the street" from Little Girl is the same as "You know i will obey" (i think thats it) from Blood Sex, and Booze. i also take back what i said about all the songs on 21st CB being better than the ones they borrowed from, just some of them are, like the ones i mentioned above.
dangreenday Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 i definitely noticed too much too soon / Murder city but the rest i didnt really notice...i don't think there too much alike and its all good anyways
MusicalDeviant Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I'm not sure that's what I'm thinking of but you're probably right P.S. Wow, I was just listening to American Eulogy and at 3:12, it sounds EXACTLY like 0:36 of Christian's Inferno !!! EXACTLY !!!You mean 3:13 of American Eulogy and 0:36 of Christian's Inferno. And yes, the do.
Juju Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 yeah, i noticed it in a few songs.the piano intro to "21st Century Breakdown" also kinda sounds like the piano in The Who's "Teenage Wasteland"i think it's nice. seems like it kinda reminds the longtime fans of the older stuff, and gives the newer fans a chance to hear tidbits of their old stuff.idk. maybe i'm crazy...or maybe they did it on purpose. lolz.
Clayish Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 yeah, i noticed it in a few songs.the piano intro to "21st Century Breakdown" also kinda sounds like the piano in The Who's "Teenage Wasteland"Baba O'Riley, you mean
Modern Zero. Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 How close are you people listening?? I've hardly noticed any similarities, I checked for the ones you guys have mentioned, and my god are most of them tenuous. People just have to find something to complain about. Let's face it, the songs with similarities, say Static Age, are better than the ones they seem to 'copy' from. Especially Static Age is getting to me, it's only in the chorus, and even then, it is almost entirely unrecogniseable, what with the different lyrics, about a 50% different melody and what-not. Sure I am hearing a slight similarity, but hardly anything noteworthy. Little Girl soundling like Misery? Well thats just because they have a similar style. The actual songs are pretty different. I noticed RHS and bobd, but I think that may be more a nod to previous word by the band on purpose. 21 Guns I didn't really pick any similarities up. There is something Whatsernameish about LOTAG, but only in that they have a similar sorta of structure at the very beginning. There is something more to Viva La Gloria and Letterbomb, but the song are essentially so different that it is negligable. I really do think people are making waaaay too much of his sort of thing.Agreed. My friend Sarah also said that Little Girl sounded like Misery, but like you said, it's just because the style is similar. Really, they sound pretty different. Peacemaker also has the similar style. And same with 21 Guns. Similar style, similar feel to the song, but they're WAY different. Just because it's a slower song people are going to make it out to be "the next BOBD or the next Time of Your Life" when they're obviously really different. And I think that one of the only reasons why Viva La Gloria sounds like Letterbomb is because it's basically in the same key. Other than that they sound completely different. I'm not hearing any similarities with LOTAG and Whatsername...although I do agree that the structure to them is sorta similar in the beginning. The only song that I picked up an obvious similarity to is Deadbeat Holiday/Mass Hysteria (just because of the vocal progression btw) and also RHS and BOBD. But that's about it. And the thing is...is that a lot of people complain about how Green Day should just go back to the way that they're older stuff sounded, and yet some mention all these similarities to the older songs and these songs...so obviously there is a spark of Green Day's old stuff in this album. And I obviously don't see how this is a big deal. Like other people have said, there's only a certain amount of chord progressions, songs are bound to sound like others, especially since Green Day has been around for almost 21 years. I've been playing guitar for six years so far and I've noticed that a lot of songs I play have very similar chord progressions as other songs, but that's to be expected. Really no song is going to be 100% unique. And I don't see why people look for the smallest similarities to the songs, when they virtually sound TOTALLY different.
IzButt Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 There are only so many possible chord progressions. For a band that's going almost 21 years there are bound to be some similarities between songs.This.I dunno I feel the album is a mix between Warning and American Idiot. Which is cool in my book.
death_has_a_shadow Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 When I first listened to the album, I definitely felt that some of the songs could have been on previous albums. But, I like that the new stuff reminds me of all the old songs that I still love. People can call it lack of creativity all they want, I think there's a reason they sound that way.
