TheMinority Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Christian's Inferno sounds like Transistors Gone Wild a bit
Guest jude88 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I don't think there's a lot of similarity though
CarnageXB Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 21 guns solo sounds like full house theme songDamn, someone already beat me to it.
CarnageXB Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Christian's Inferno sounds like Transistors Gone Wild a bit Once I heard that song I said "The Network"
badwolf Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 The songs are good, aren't they? So why does it matter?
CarnageXB Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Christian's Inferno sounds like Transistors Gone Wild a bit Once I heard that song I said "The Network"I hate lag
music_that_is Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Here's an interesting one about the similaritieshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zAMY_UNOZkGreen Day vs. Full Househttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T32ZWLvZANUWow.They really sound alike.I missed FullHouse..
Fulano Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Drums on STATIC AGE is so similar to the beggining drums on ARMATAGE SHANKS xD
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Here's an interesting one about the similaritieshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zAMY_UNOZkThat's indeed interesting...
crazychic Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 there are two songs to me that sound similar to their old songs ?viva la gloria? (little girl) sounds like misery and mass hysteria sounds like one of the songs on AI am not sure which one lol
Nele Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Here's an interesting one about the similaritieshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zAMY_UNOZkYeah, that's quite interesting indeed. But, well, they are the same band, the same persons... So I think it's not really surprising that some songs sound a bit like others.
josh_oliday Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 If you listen closely to the drums in LotAG, they are almost the same as the drums at the beginning of Whatsername. I especially noticed this one when they were playing it live.
deathtofalsesushi Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 While we're at it, the Horseshoes and Handgrenades riff is similar to the one they play in the middle of Prosthetic Head (and as someone pointed out in another thread, Main Offender by The Hives)But it has been something they've been doing for much of their career. Really, the topic should be "Why do so many Green Day songs sound like other Green Day songs?" and there are some logical explanations for that
The Disappearing Boy Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 part of static age reminds me of doo da da.
RebelofSuburbia Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Once I heard that song I said "The Network"yup me too. I wonder if they did that on purpose.I don't really get the fuss about this. They really are clearly different songs. They might sound similar but they do not sound alike. Plus it's their own songs so if they were ripping off anyone, they'd rip off themselves. Though there was one song that really reminded me of The Hives.
toaster_poodle Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 This is probably gonna sound like I'm grasping at straws to defend the band, BUT, what if they did it on purpose? Like you guys have said there are some things like Mass Hysteria/Deadbeat Holiday, Viva La Gloria?/Misery, etc that are blatantly similar to stuff they did previously, almost too similar for them not to realize it. But there are also some things like that regarding other bands, like the chorus of "21 Guns" is VERY similar to that of "All the Young Dudes" by Mott the Hoople (or David Bowie, who did a cover of it), and there are parts of "Restless Heart Syndrome" that are pretty reminiscent of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", and while it didn't come from a specific song, it's hard to not think of The Who when you hear the beginning of "21st Century Breakdown". Plus their are similarities within the album, like the intro to "Little Girl" sounding a lot like the I'm elated, medicated part of RHS, and all kinds of other little things like that that I can't recall right now, not to mention the obvious one's like "Song of the Century" resurfacing at the end as well as the beginning of the title track serving also as the outro to the album. Whether all this was entirely on purpose on their part or more of a subconscious thing, it's almost like an underlying concept of the album being a reference/culmination of their past as well as an homage to their influences. On the other hand, it isn't uncommon for a songwriter to rework old melodies/chord progressions/whatever in a different context, and that too could be on purpose or subconscious. And a band is gonna have similarities to itself anyway, especially after 20 years and 8 albums. It's almost like an auteur style that bands develop over time. Hell, you can pick an AC/DC song out of a hat and find a dozen more that sound almost just like it (hate to pick on AC/DC cause they're always the band that gets shit about that, but it's true). The bottom line is what the post above me said, they take influence from what they do, but they're clearly different songs.
MusicalDeviant Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Now don't get me wrong here. I LOVE 21st Century Breakdown, however it seems there are quite a few similarities with other Green Day songs on it. Here are some I have noticed, you guys may have found more.1. American Eulogy > Deadbeat HolidayThe verse melodies are pretty similar, not much to explain here.2. The Static age > Church on SundayThe chorus rhythm for both songs are very similar.3. Viva la Gloria > Worry RockThis isn't anything major, but the melody of "...we're gonna start a war..." and "...fat lips and open wounds..." sounds a lot the same.4. Murder city > Too much too soon"...This demonstration of our anguish" sounds A LOT like "...I hope you rest in pieces..."Anyway, as I said this is not meant to be negative about the new songs at all. I just noticed there are quite a few similarities and it may be fun to see what else we can find!Don't forget that the guitar solo at the end of Mast Hysteria sounds like the guitar solo from homecoming. But self-plagiarism is not an uncommon thing.
Seedless_Reject Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I thought that Billie used the "Fink" voice at times.
iLozza! Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Indeed a lot of the songs sound similar. Doesn't stop me loving the album though. And a lot of the songs they sound similar to, I'm also in love with, bwhaha.
RebelofSuburbia Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Plus their are similarities within the album, like the intro to "Little Girl" sounding a lot like the I'm elated, medicated part of RHS, and all kinds of other little things like that that I can't recall right now, not to mention the obvious one's like "Song of the Century" resurfacing at the end as well as the beginning of the title track serving also as the outro to the album. To me, 21st Century Breakdown is very much a concept album, much more as American Idiot is. I think this might well be Green Day's Tommy. The repetitions and similarities on the album fit into such a concept album. Like in The Who's Tommy, where the 'See me, feel me / Touch me, heal me' comes back several times throughout the album as well as the main Overture riff.
Katarina. Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I thought that Billie used the "Fink" voice at times.I think I know what you mean, and yeah, I heard that too. I like it
