Bryn Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 As for Know Your Enemy, I think the whole point is that this song could apply to anyone's enemy. Billie Joe isn't trying to tell us who our enemy is. He's trying to tell us that it's important to stop and think about it and figure it out - to not allow ourselves to become complacent. The enemy could be the government, corporate America, the guy next door, or our own selves and the things we do to mess ourselves up. IMO, that's why the song is not written in a more specific way, but a lyric like "Don't be blinded by the lies in your eyes," is a sweet little hint that we shouldn't only be looking externally for enemies. I think there's a lot of depth to this song, but it's easy to miss because it's subtle. One of the things I've always liked about Billie's lyrics is how thought-provoking they are for me. They give me ideas but leave me the freedom to explore what meanings I want to attach to those ideas. However, Green Day's music has always been easy to listen to just for fun, too. Thought-provoking but with a sense of fun - that's the kind of music I like best, and they haven't disappointed me yet.I concur. I like subtle, I hate certain things being pushed on me, and not leaving me any room to interpret them myself.
sharon mitchell Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I don't identify with a lot of lyrics from classic songs - I Am The Eggman - wtf? - but I still enjoy the songs. Green Day's lyrics may not always relate to my life (I've never taken drugs or been drunk in my life) but I can appreciate what they may mean to others. I've never been much of a revolutionary but KYE - both video and song - speak to me. I'm looking forward to hearing the album to see how it sits in with the other tracks.
Starbug Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 yea, it's like, y'know i really dont know anymore Angie. im confused about everyting. im losing my passion for everything. i dont even listen to the old albums now, cuz im just like "whatever" with everything even in my personal life. and now im embarassed for announcing that to the whole forum. i just need something i can relate to right now. to be like "yea, somebody does get it, im not as alone here as i thought"from the beginning back when i got into the band, i felt like i could relate to Jimmy, and even though looking back that was stupid of a 13 year old, it made sense then, and it makes even more sense now. i got that throughout every album, be it 39/smooth's I Was There to Nimrod's Worry Rock to American Idiot's Are We the Waiting. But this album? no. it just doesn't do it for me, and i pray to the gods of lushotology that it didn't have to be this way.Well maybe it will change once you hear it...I shared the download of Murder City with my best friend, and it was exactly what she needed right then. 'Desperate... But not hopeless... Desperate... but not helpless," And Green Day has always been that way for us, too. You never know how something might strike you in the future. But irregardless, don't lose the love for your favorite band because of one album. Enjoy what they've already given you. I know I sure do
MusicalDeviant Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I'd rather they had refunded my the money for my shirt at the Fox and not made a video at all.I fucking concur. We need our own forum, goddamnit.Amen. $35 wass a rip off, regardless of its once-in-a-lifetime availability. When it costs more than double the album it promotes, which acutally plays music, and doesn't just look nice, its definitely a rip off. BullwinklingDeviant.org

I think they're trying something a little different, and I do hope it works for them. I'm pretty positive I won't think it's shit, because they've never put out shit. But I think we're in for something completely different. And it just might be refreshing. I'm still excited! I'm REALLY excited
J'net Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I concur. I like subtle, I hate certain things being pushed on me, and not leaving me any room to interpret them myself.Exactly! Each song's meaning can be more personal to me (and every other listener) if it's not too overt.

I know I sure do i do too, i do! im not willing to give up after everthing we've all been through and what attachments i've made to the band! i refuse to! i...im just going through a lot right now and i need a hug and things are hard at home and at school and with steven and my friends, everything's falling apart and then it's like the little strand of glue that's holding it together (this band) is starting to diminish and it's not a good feeling at all. uhm, GDC im so sorry for being such a jerk-off right when we all should be excited. we've been waiting years for this to happen, this is one of the best times to be a fan, and i go ahead and kick sand in everyone's faces. i'll be better soon, hopefully, once the album comes out and im not feeling like a complete nutcase.[edit] fuck me, now i killed the thread.

I know it's hard to be excited for something when everything else has turned to shit. believe me. Especially if that 'something' isn't quite what you expected it to be. But chin up, new Green Day is coming, and it'll be WAY better than you think it'll be. And you know, if ya need me, you know where to find me
Farah Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Wauw. Haven't seen Minority in a while. Parley Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I'm surprised at the negativity for this video. I think it's perfect for GD's first official video of their return. It's exactly what I wanted to see--Green Day performing their music in a setting that is appropriate for the song.I can't ask for much more than that right now.
Guest Shangri-La Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I like you even moreare you anti telly too?
M1KEY Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Sam Bayer is not retired. He's doing the new Nightmare on Elm Street. He said he had retired from music videos until Green Day approached him with American Idiot. Then he re-retired after Wake Me Up When September Ends. Then they decided to do Jesus of Suburbia, and Sam said it was the best music video ever and re-re-retired after directing it. Maybe he's still directing, but he claims to have retired from music videos. And so... his retirement might have something to do with it.why is everyone giving green day shit on a record no one has heard jet, i dont see any one else write a good record.. everyone just wants to have something to say.. thats all.Mikey likes you.
Welshy Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 On greenday.com it has a short TV spot for UK which includes clips from KYE and the promo video thats been posted before.
Bryn Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Exactly! Each song's meaning can be more personal to me (and every other listener) if it's not too overt. There are some bands I like, but certain songs just seem like they are supposed to mean this one thing, and no matter how hard you try, you can not make them mean anything else. SO those bands get listened to a lot less really. I really love U2, but they sometimes do that. "Sunday Bloody Sunday". Awesome song, but it is about one thing and means one thing. I have never been able to make it "Oh ok, this lyric is something I really relate to" no matter how much I love the song. I may believe in the meaning behind it, but that is a completely different thing. I don't identify with a lot of lyrics from classic songs - I Am The Eggman - wtf? - but I still enjoy the songs. Green Day's lyrics may not always relate to my life (I've never taken drugs or been drunk in my life) but I can appreciate what they may mean to others. I've never been much of a revolutionary but KYE - both video and song - speak to me. I'm looking forward to hearing the album to see how it sits in with the other tracks.LOL I love "I Am the Walrus" but it is about the biggest WTF song ever written. LOL I remember the first time I heard it, and I talked about it for weeks, because it is just so odd. I have been drunk and that song still kinda doesn't mean anything. other Beatles songs though are open for interpretation. Well I guess that one is too...it is just odd. LOLMe as well, I can not wait to hear the whole album. It will be on repeat for weeks on my iPod and in my car I am sure.

J'net Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Me as well, I can not wait to hear the whole album. It will be on repeat for weeks on my iPod and in my car I am sure.Me, too! I'm so eager to hear the whole thing. Nice new sig!!!
The Disappearing Boy Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 My enemy is myselfkinda handy really, considering the meaning of the song
