LOL at angsty forum users

Of course I was born with natural musical talent----My whole family is. We all sing or play instruments. So my opinion may be flawed given that I was blessed with rhythm and melody. So playing various instruments came along very easily for me.

Rawr! And the epic rivalry begins!

If this were a movie and not just people being overly dramatic on a message board.

I don't care if Dave isn't a great guitarist, he makes great songs, and he's an excellent drummer, he convinced me when he was playing with Queens of the stone age

I'm interested in hearing more from QOSA, I've only heard a couple of their songs, but I think they're pretty damn decent.

they're not decent. They're weirder than Zappa on crack and greater than hendrix on acid. Get the first record, I know everybody goes "Yo Songs For the Dead FTW", but no, the first one is the best

I so will. I've never seen a more deserving thread before in my life. Yet, I couldn't leave. Guilty pleasure sort of thing.

haha noooice

I am familiar with Cookie Monster's work, but I prefer Ernie. His basslines are wicked.

I need to go to bed.

I left and missed all the QOTSA talk, goddamnit. :( Whoever was asking about them, they are amazing, take a listen.

Yeah, and I've even noticed there's not quite as many standout drum solos, not since their earlier albums. Correct me, someone, if I'm wrong? I think Tre's best playing was on Dookie. He's fantastic, don't get me wrong, but there's something about songs like Burnout and In the End that really make those drums shine.

in my opinion some of the best drumming tre's ever done is on insomniac. those beats are amazing. and the drumming on the breakdown in welcome to paradise is ridiculous. i think you need 3 arms to play part of that haha.

but yeah if one wants to see how great mike and tre are go listen to insomniac. that was billie's easiest guitar album. every song was power chords with the exception of the little lead riff in panic song. with the lack of any guitar stand outs mike got to fill in the gaps and tre got to go nuts. thats a great album.

now on american idiot, tres druming is really good too..its the little things he does that makes it sound good. and hard to play for drummers haha. but yeah i always wondered why mikes bass wasnt as prominent on american idiot. i think its just phases that musicians go through you know? i mean on insomniac for example..billie joes guitar playing was bare bone basic. musicians just go through phases where they enjoy playing certain things a certain way. just their approach at the time.

my theory on american idiot is that mike just wanted a less is more approach. american idiot is an album driven by the singing hooks and loud guitars. mikes approach was probably to lay low and let the bass just blend with the guitar a little more and let the singing melodies get the job done.

Tre kicks the living s**t outta his drum kit on St. Jimmy, particularly during the first bridge -- I can swear his snares sound like machine-gun fire! I'd kill to see him play that live sometime, but it'd surprise me if they'd put it on their setlists for the 21CB tour.

If I'm not mistaken (I had a pretty intense contact high), they played "St. Jimmy" at the Fox Theater show, so you never know.

im not reading 4 pages. too late and tired, but has anyone thought that maybe, just maybe he doesnt have as many because he doesnt want to get carpels tunnel again? he had surgery on it during warning, i believe. and the consistent/fast note-playing and transitions could have some play in his toning down a bit. just my opinion though

True that. It was a welcome surprise. I can't believe that was already a week ago.

Mike was the reason that i wanted to start playing bass and i was always excited to hear his new stuff each time they bought out a new album. He was always one of the best around, but when AI came out i was shocked that there was hardly a bass line on the whole album. There are parts in JOS and Holiday but they are still just the root notes really. Im not having a go at him or anything like that as im a huge fan, im just intrested what other people think the reasons might be??

My idea is that on the earlier albums upto warning there was only ever one guitar mostly playing rhythm as Billie has to sing, so Mike had lots of oppurtunity to fill out the sound so speak. Songs like Redundant, Stuck With Me, Sasaffras Roots, When I Aome Around 80, 86 etc are all good examples of this. And on other songs he had some great fills and solo bass parts Welcome To Paradise, Stu & the Ave, Reject, In The End the list goes on lol.

Warning was the first time (i think) they used a second guitarist on stage to play lead and there is less of the obvious bass lins on this album , though Minority, Warning and Hold On are still good examples of his work.

Then in AI there is alot bigger sound with guitars, keyboard and stuff on nearly all the tracks and there is hardly any bass lines at all.

So to sum up i think now that the songs have a much bigger sound and its not just the three of them on stage or on the album there is less need for Mikes bass lines with so much other stuff going on in the songs now.

But i still want them back please Mike

Would be intrested ot hear other peoples views on this if i havent sent you all to sleep??? :)

I totally agree with you. I miss his Dookie and Insomniac bassfills, they just make it more interesting. Hope he's not just playing like the guitar on 21stCBD

I guess we'll have to wait a few more weeks to find out if Mike comes roaring back, but I share your disappointment in the lack of bass pwnage on AI. Granted there were fewer on Warning than on previous records, but the ones that existed were really good, like Minority and Castaway.

Posted

Ah Castaway, i knew there was one i forgot lol

I hadnt considered the surgery issue, i wonder if they have played any of the faster transitional songs since that??

Mike is definately not one of the best bass players of all time, but in the punk genre he is certainly better than most. And from seeing a few of his random boogies between songs he can play stuff that is more technical than on the albums. Im sure the same is true for Billie and Tre aswell.

I imagine Mike would have wrote some of the guitar lines for AI on his bass, as id hate to think he was just following the guitar for most of the album.

I used to really enjoy the runs he did in songs as it gave him a unique sound like She, Jinx, Nice Guys Finish Last, 86 etc

Looking forward to hearing the new stuff though

Oh yeah. I'm not saying he didn't have any standout drum parts, but nothing like the amount he had in the earlier albums. Tre is an outstanding drummer, period, but it just seems to me he wasn't utilized as much later one.

Good point. Never thought about that... but I also know he's a bassist, and love what he does, and carpel tunnel probably wouldn't stop him lol Unless indeed he's in a lot of pain...
