MusicalDeviant Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Hahaha, exactly. Mike really is incredible. I was watching his fingers move on the fret board at the DNA Lounge show, and my brain almost exploded.Yeah, I really don't think people give him enough credit for being versatile with his drumming. "Platypus" is just great all around.Oh, right, you got to see them at DNA. Hate you. Too much cymbal playing? Yeah, I don't think its ENOUGH cymbal playing. Lawrence Livermore reference, anyone?
Starbug Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 So damn true.Ah, but then you get to "Welcome To Paradise". The drums on that song blow my mind. YES! I was just thinking that a few minutes ago, when it was playing. Amazing! I get chills at the idea of hearing that live, even though it's not one of my faves... I'm at the end of She now, my favorite. Song. Ever Hell yeah it is.How many back-up bassists does green day have? Oh, right: 0. Back up guitarists? 2What about Platypus (I Hate You)? Tre's drumming on that track stuns me every time I listen to it.Good point about the backups lol You're right. Tre and Mike are the best at what they do, hands down. Billie is a great singer and lyricist. He's an okay guitarist.

But damn, what an ass on that man.I'm beginning to suspect that the line from Letterbomb was not "Where have all the bastards gone?" but "where have all the bass-lines gone?"
Lauren Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Longview, however, is owned by Mike Not necessarily true. Tre does a pretty good job on the drums here. I know it sure is a heck of a lot of fun to play this song on the drums. Sure it's not crazy fast fills and all, but it's a really nice beat.Billie is a great singer and lyricist. He's an okay guitarist.Billie actually has a lot in him. but, you CAN'T expect him to be a great guitarist while also trying to be a great singer and a great lyricist.I have my moments where I show off on bass or guitar, but usually not while I'm singing. When I sing, I like to focus on my singing, so my guitar playing doesn't sound as good - which is why I get back-up guitarists.

But Mike's bass playing literally makes this song. That's why I say he owns it.Billie isn't a bad guitarist. I think his earlier stuff, like on 1039 and Kerplunk was his best on guitar, honestly. He got fancier and braver... but there are plenty of guitarists/singers who manage both just fine. John Mayer, Eric Clapton, BB King... on and on lol But Billie is Billie, and irregardless, he's brilliant
TheBullwinkle Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Oh, right, you got to see them at DNA. Hate you. Too much cymbal playing? Yeah, I don't think its ENOUGH cymbal playing. Lawrence Livermore reference, anyone?Aw, Matt, but I you. There can never be too much of Tré banging on anything.
Lauren Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Quite honestly, I don't think I'd like a lot of fancy guitar stuff for this band.Aw, Matt, but I you. There can never be too much of Tré banging me.Wow.
Starbug Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Quite honestly, I don't think I'd like a lot of fancy guitar stuff for this band.Wow.Yeah, punk's not really known for fancy guitar. I think this is a lyrical, drum based band. Sounds odd, but Tre is an awesome drummer, and Mike isn't utilized enough... I'm listening to 86 (My geekout has bled over into Insomniac now...) and the bass in it is incredible. Whoever started this thread is right, Mike is underused.
Guest Billy Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 if anything, Green Day has become less talented over the years musically. while punk is probably one of the least talent bands, there are some really talented old school 80's punk bands. Green Day had some raw talent in the early 90's, as seen on 1039. while i may not be a fan of the guitar solos, Billie sticked to some scales without having formal training. now that itself is really nice to know that even though he might not have no idea about the scales and such, he played some according to scales. Kerplunk! is a great album because it explores more musicial genres. One For the Razorbacks is a great song because it's unlike most of their songs. Words I Might Have Ate showed off a punk Beatles esque thing going. Welchome to Paradise is a great overall song, one because of the bass parts. the bass in that song is absolutely great. the guitar part during the bridge is fantastic, too. the musicianship of the band has gone down after that, i mean Dookie might have been a great sounding album, but it lacks musicianship. the best on on that album for musicianship would be Longview, because at the end Billie does play a harmonic which unseen in any other Green Day song from then on. the bass is also really great in that song for punk. Insomniac was a semi-revival of the musicianship, but the guitar parts of the album are lacking. they're the same basic chords in different melodies and distortion. Nimrod had some really good musicianship qualities, ie Prothstetic Head and Hitchin' a Ride. Warning was great with melodies and was an average album for musicianship, much better than everything beyond Kerplunk! then, American Idiot was a musician's disaster. it wasn't that great on any musicianship level, it was just plain and ordinary. the solos are either the same exact melody. there is no profound bass as this thread is about. the drums are lacking too. over the years, they've just gone down with nothing really significant.
Starbug Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Thank you for fixing my typing error.PANIC SONG! Louder, louder, louder...Drums and bass own this one, too... Wow.

Louder, louder, louder...Drums and bass own this one, too... Wow.My parents are going to walk in on me doing dirty things if we keep this up...
amy_runs Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I think Mike will have a super awesome bass line somewhere in this album. Along with a gnarly drum solo by Tre. I can feel it...

But I think they do need to show off the mad skillz of their bassist more often. And their insane drummer, too. I still think the music is great.I think Mike will have a super awesome bass line somewhere in this album. Along with a gnarly drum solo by Tre. I can feel it...From what I've heard, I think Tre shines more on drums this go round. I could be wrong, though.Lights Out definitely showcases them more, though not as much as they should be.
Lauren Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 My parents are going to walk in on me doing dirty things if we keep this up...then lock the door.have you ever licked a bass? it's fun.
Boston Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 The older stuff was more raw - punchier, a bit grungier, less polished, etc. The bass fit in well with that style. The new Green Day is more grandiose and theatrical than the old Green Day, and the bass doesn't fit in as well. I do hope that he gets a good, grungy bass line that makes my floor shake and my parents yell on this album, though. I miss it.

The new Green Day is more grandiose and theatrical than the old Green Day, and the bass doesn't fit in as well.Definitely true. With their older style, it was more poppier and the bass was able to run all over the place, sounding amazing as always. Now, it's a bit darker, and the bass needs more of the thick, solid, root notes. A jumpy bassline just wouldn't sound as good in some of these songs.

I still think the music is great.i hate to break this to you all, but Green Day doesn't really have a great musician.there are no amazing muscians within the band.Tre is an average drummer, he's not amazing.amazing drummers in today's music: Chad Smith, Joey Jordinson, etc.amazing guitarists in today's music: John Frusciante, Kirk Hammet, etc.amazing bassists in today's music: Flea, Les Claypool, etc.now, some would think that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are an all-star band with some of the greatest musicians in the world. they would be except for the fact that Anthony Kiedis sometimes makes really bad lyrics and doesn't understand music as he can play no instruments.

Nothing special.

By the way, Chad Smith sucks. Every RHCP song sounds the same. In my opinion, of course.
Starbug Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 He definitely does. He gets to go crazy again. I'm glad to hear that
MusicalDeviant Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Aw, Matt, but I you. There can never be too much of Tré banging on anything.Ohhhh, that is definitely the truth.
