Government controlling the internet?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House says a 60-day review of the nation's cyber security is finished and a report has been submitted to the president.

The report comes amid dire warnings that the U.S. is ill-prepared for a cyber attack. The study looked at how the government can better manage and use technology to protect everything from the nation's electrical grid and stock markets to tax data, airline flight systems and nuclear launch codes.

Officials have acknowledged that government computer networks are constantly assailed by attacks and scans, ranging from nuisance hacking to more nefarious assaults, possibly from other nations, such as China.

President Barack Obama last month ordered the review and put former Bush administration aide Melissa Hathaway in charge of the effort. Hathaway met with industry leaders, Capitol Hill staff and other experts, seeking guidance on what the federal government's role should be in protecting information networks against an attack.

Her report is expected to recommend how the government should be organized and who should control cyber issues. Members of Congress have said they believe it will say cyber matters should be coordinated through the White House.

Shouldn't it be the sole responsibility of the people who are in charge of those networks? ie, people who manage the electrical grid, airline computers, etc? Why does the government feel they should have control over the internet?

i think they need to protect, not control.

like, protect all of the things said on that article, but there is no need to control anything.

no one owns the internet. that is why it owns. =D

You can't protect anything without control... Like I said, protection should be the responsibility of the people who manage those particular networks, not the government.

well, u don't need to own it to protect it.

just get people working on protections for whatever it is they are scared off, and make it available for people to download. if its a good protection software, people will eventually download it.

i think they just want to control it. obama knows the power of the internet much better than bush.

You're gonna have to fill me in a bit more about how this is saying they will control the internet?

Your point of view so far seems similar to saying that a company being hacked into shouldn't have authority to do anything with the internet, but leave it to the ISP to deal with them. Maybe I'm just missing the part where this suggests the government is about to control the internet (which it wont)

I specifically said "people who manage their networks" ie, IT administrators, not ISPs... In order to protect something, you need some control over it. The government would not be able to step in during a "cyberattack" if it did not already have the infrastructure necessary to do so

President Obama wants to watch all your porn.

Seriously, that's ridiculous. Only your ISP needs to know what you've been on.

PLEASE don't bring Obama into this... yet. I specifically haven't posted his name because I know it's been submitted to him and he had nothing to do with the write-up of the plan. So maybe once he approves it or whatever. But as of now, he's got nothing to do with it.

And TBH I don't like the idea of my ISP knowing what I do on the internet either. Not that I have anything to hide. but my guess is that your typical ISP doesn't have dozens of people monitoring internet traffic anyway, but rather, an automated system that gets flagged down when something happens. At least I'd hope

It's because they're not as prepared for a cyber attack so the government wants to take over
