Know Your Enemy single

I agree with you. The shame is that it's their own fault. They still have all the ability they ever had, they are just misguided. True concept albums (which AI wasn't) are rarely commercially successful. People might say Green Day doesn't care about being commercially successful, but I know that is bullshit because they've said multiple times they would like to be the biggest rock band in the world (taking U2 or Coldplay's spot). Why do we think they changed their look from simple Berkley punks to rock star clothes and hair and eyeliner...they wanted all the teenie girls to squeal and get on the front page of Tiger Beat and shit, and guess what it worked.

They should of headed back to their roots, be GREEN DAY and do what they do best. Their first single for this new album should have been the best song they're ever written and they shouldn't have settled for less. KYE is ultimately forgettable and couldn't have been a worse choice to promote this album. I want to album to be promoted well and to be successful so they are encouraged to keep making records!! I'm concerned that if this 3 years of hard work is a flop they may get discouraged and pack it in.

I think a strong album full of songs like "Lights Out" would have been just what the doctor ordered.

Well think about what you said. You're gonna have to bear with me in this post. I know this sounds mega-crazy, but if the first single was the best song they'd ever written I don't even think it would be as popular as KYE. That's purely because of the fact that with AI, the first single was American Idiot, which was a great song but not their best. Their best song (in my opinion) is Jesus of Suburbia, and that was the last single off that record. Could you imagine if JOS was the first single? Yeah it's a much better song than AI, but it's not first single material. At all. KYE, however is. It's not as much a song for the established fans as it is for regular radio-listeners, MTV-viewers etc. Many people I know who aren't even particularly Green Day fans are saying, "hey, KYE is really great", and I'm like, "just you fucking wait for the record".

The success of 21stCB is not resting upon KYE alone. The follow up singles are going to be massive. Just like BOBD and WMUWSE were the major promotors and the biggest hits for the last album.

And you think U2 and Coldplay would be where they are now if they released their best songs as first singles? No way. They throw out the catchiest, poppiest hooks they can and reel in the fans.

21stCB is gonna be huge, whether it's as big as AI or not. And I don't think there's any chance the band will pack it in solely based on how this record performs.

There are two major irony's in this. The first being that Green Day aren't gonna be the world's biggest rock band by releasing their best song ever. And secondly, I think they may have had trouble coming up with a first single that's as good as AI was because of how great they want to be with 21stCB. By that I mean that they will have set the bar so high and the songs are gonna be so good, they run the risk of being too good for the radio. I mean the structures of the songs I've heard so far are so complex they just aren't radio-friendly, despite being great songs. It's likely that of the record's 18 songs KYE was one of very few that stood any chance of being first single, just like AI was last time.

I risk sounding repetitive, but AI was not the best song last time, but was the best single choice. Surely KYE will be the same.

^ I agree with you.

KYE has grown on me a lot; I actually hated it to begin with, but once I heard the full thing and read the lyrics and got to know the song, I started to like it so much better. Even before I heard it I was aware that it would probably not blow me away, because I knew they'd choose a song similar to American Idiot to be the first single, and the title track is one of my least favourite songs off American Idiot. But both AI and KYE make sense as first singles, just because they're so catchy, radio friendly, and repetitive to some extent.

So yes, I like Know Your Enemy and think it's a suitable first single, but I expect much greater things from the rest of the album. :)

The song has really grown on me, I noticed. I expected I'd get bored with it easily, but now that I haven't overplayed it, I really like it, way better then when the first "yay a new song :woot:"-mood was over

(nope, no big philosophy about the song/single/album from me :])

Well guys, KYE is climbing here again. Number 8 tonight (with my help! :D) on The Hit List. Im gonna vote every night.

I seriously hope 21stCB is a single, that would be a killer single.

I still haven't heard it on the radio, even though my friend did couple of times :/

I'm kinda mad

Know Your Enemy sounds to me like it should have been a B side on one of the AI singles. It's just meh to me.

I like Lights Out better, but it's still all boring to me.

Agreed.

Saw this from Billboard's Hot 100 List today:

The Hot 100's next-highest debut comes from Green Day at No. 40 with "Know Your Enemy." It's the band's best Hot 100 bow ever -- which also happens to debut on the Modern Rock radio airplay chart at No. 8. It's the first single from the trio's "21st Century Breakdown" album, due on Friday, May 15.

its number 28 on itunes.

I've been tracking it.

It was its highest the day it debuted, at 18 or somthing. It slowly dropped to 28 . Rose a bit the last few days, and dropped back again.

Hopefully the video will help it rise again!

KYE is now #28 on the Australian itunes countdown. It's better than #40.

It's nice to see its starting to do well.

I ordered mine from Amazon, too, but it hasn't been there all along. It just showed up yesterday as far as I know (I hadn't seen it before then, but I also wasn't looking everyday).

^Actually, I just saw it (and pre-ordered it) this morning.

I also got the Insomniac vinyl

Hmmmm I just looked on Amazon and found Know Your Enemy with the other 2 songs too .... but funnily enough, it's an Australian pressing.

http://www.amazon.com/Know-Your-Enemy-Maxi...4550&sr=1-4

So I expect that it will be available to buy here at some point soon. I'll do some scouting around I think.

I just saw yesterday that someone had posted about it in a thread here (don't remember which thread) - it's called the Maxi CD. That's what prompted me to go look for it. And you have now prompted me to go order the Insomniac vinyl. I preordered the first 3 but nothing else was available to order at that point. Totally forgot to go look for more now that the first ones have arrived.

Thanks for the reminder!!!

I know that the 99p CD single that is out in the UK on Monday will have both KYE and Lights Out, I don't think we're getting the maxi CD though. Least I haven't heard anything about it yet
