katie Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 No hate to The Libertines, they're very good, but throwing 'em all the way up at the top? Don't.Not Libertines, Babyshambles.
Towers Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Not Libertines, Babyshambles.Doherty is a genius, but I don't think he should be on the top
katie Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Another battle that can be compared to the Jahn vs. Paul... Doherty vs. Barat!I'm going for Doherty in Down in Albion vs. Waterloo to Anywhere, but with Barat in Shotter's Nation vs. Romance at Short Notice. OVERALL winner: Doherty for Music When the Lights Go Out. EPIC songThat was the exact song I was thinking of when I wrote that hahaWell that and Fuck Forever. Barat is also amazing, but Doherty just takes the cake only because I like more of his work than Barat's but then again that could be because I am more familiar with his. hmmDoherty is a genius, but I don't think he should be on the topPersonally, I think soBut maybe because... I've never actually listened to Dylan

Go listen to The Times They Are A-Changin' and All Along the Watchtower, once you listen to those lyrics understanding when they were written you will know why we say he IS THE BEST
Peel Slowly And See Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Just listen to the entirety of the Highway 61 Revisited album. Start there. If you like what you hear, I'll tell you where to go after that.
liquorhill Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 The correct answer is... not Dylan, nor Cobain. Sorry.

Peel Slowly And See Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Thank ya. Man, if the two songs you suggested had that effect on him, wait 'til Like A Rolling Stone, Tombstone Blues, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, and Desolation Row hit him. I wish I could hear this album for the first time again.
katie Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Now listen to the album I suggested and get ready for your face to be melted off.Well when I looked up Highway 61 Revisited it took me to a song titled that so I listened to it and actually, I've heard that before and really really liked but I had no clue it was Dylan.I am going to Indiana University next year and last year for their homecoming Bob Dylan performed and now I am extremely jealous. No problem you have a really good taste in musicThanks and you too! Peel Slowly And See Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 What do you think of My Chemical Romance's murder of Desolation Row?I despise it. It's just...really bad. Also, I've seen Dylan live. He played after Willie Nelson.
katie Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I'm sorry, but whenever I see a bald head or a mustache in an avatar I tend to assume things.Well thanks for making me paranoid, I will change it now. And the bald head was Phil Collins, aka a b.a.
Towers Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I despise it. It's just...really bad. Also, I've seen Dylan live. He played after Willie Nelson.I love/hate you so much right now.I actually felt insulted when I heard MCR was playing a Dylan song, especially in Watchmen, I love that book.

vegetarianxorgasm Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I despise it. It's just...really bad. Also, I've seen Dylan live. He played after Willie Nelson. He's coming to a Festival just five minutes out of my town called Rothbury. I'm very keen on going. VERY keen.Although I can't remember who else is coming this way.Sadly, it isn't Green Day. I love/hate you so much right now.I actually felt insulted when I heard MCR was playing a Dylan song, especially in Watchmen, I love that book.Yeah, worst part of that movie. But the opening credits used Dylan nicely.

peepee Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Just wanting to gauge the true feeling about Billie Joe's lyrical ability. I was reading the comments under the news items of 21CB's Lyrics Release and somebody compared him the Bob Dylan and Kurt Cobain.I've always felt Billie goes a bit over his skis with his lyrics starting with AI. To me it seems like he tries to say profound things, but there is no real point to most of it, or maybe it has meaning to him and he leaves it up to everyone else to come up with their own interpretation. That's all well and good, but that's not a skilled lyricist. He does some nice word play ("Fallen from grace/Right on my face"), but when I think of great lyrics I look at Sting and Maynard of Tool.I'm not denying Billie can write a killer song, I'm an enormous Green Day fan, but when I saw that comment I had to speak up. He's an average lyricist at best in my opinion. What do you guys think, and be real.I actually agree with you. It is interesting to read posts written by people who dare to be critical and honest and not only kiss ass all the time. With American Idiot Green Day kind of won the lottery. The timing with Bush and the war was perfect and while Green Day did not start the whole protest thing (even the Dixie chicks and NOFX was before and more brave in their critics) the got the most attention. With 21st CB I'm not sure what he wants anymore. I think the theme of the album was a big, big mistake and I think this review sums it up in the best possible way: http://www.spin.com/reviews/green-day-21st...eakdown-repriseI think Billie's lyrics are amazing. I guess everybody has other opinions to that. And maybe it's a surprise but I think there are even people out there who don't like Billie's lyrics. But serious, I like that most of his lyrics are so personal. He even wrote songs about that day Mike broke his arms and when you look closer the lyrics have a pretty deep meaning. In my opinion he did that way too less on AI. But when I listen to 1039 SOSH, there's like every song a personal event. Some lyricists may write more about not so personal things and I like that also but I can't relate to them so much.Exactly! And that is what I miss. I fucking hate how political they have become. BJ used to write such great personal lyrics. It was like reading his diary. That is what made Green Day so interesting. If I wanna hear about politics I might as well listen to Bad Religion, NOFX or U2. It's not interesting.
Femme Gauche Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I dunno, I find the stuff on American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown to be highly personal. Yes, there is a political feeling to it, but still, each individual song explores emotional grounds for Billie Joe himself. He has said many times, Christian and Gloria are just the images through which he talks. They're a way to put his internal feelings in a more readable form. But I think the conflict between the two characters is still very much the reflection of the conflict between two elements in himself. You can accuse me of kissing ass, but that's just how I see it.And also, NOFX hardly reaches the mass audience that Green Day reached. You weren't likely to hear "Franco Un-American" on the average radio station. It wasn't what Green Day was saying, but how massive the receptive audience was. They were the first ones on such a huge scale to say it.
