Peter. Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I know it was definitely not the lyrics that got me into Green Day since i was like 6 and couldn't read or speak english.though I remember seeing the Woodstockperformance with my brother over and over again and thinking "Wow this is soooooo cool."I guess it was just the catchy music that got me hooked or something...
DeJennsitized Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 i was about 12 or 13 when I got into them. The first song I'd heard was BOBD on one of the music channels, and after that I got up really early every morning so I could sit and watch the music channels before school, in the hope I'd catch it again. Then I got my motorola ROKR, that came with iTunes, so I went to the music store and bought Holiday and BOBD. Those were the only songs I'd heard, and I'd have Holiday on repeat for about a month. Then in early 2006 I got the album, and Bullet In A Bible at the same time.Had the album in on the car, and when I got home, watched BIAB. I found I loved the older songs more than just the ones I'd heard, so over that year I gradually bought ISH, Dookie, Kerplunk, Nimrod, Warning, Shenanigans, 1039/SOSH and Insomniac, in that order. For my 14th birthday, EVERYONE got me something Green Day related. Joined the forum 2 days later, and today I'm still obsessed.
randomness Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 was ecsatic that i was hearing stuff that I really could relate to. After the while the music grew on me more and more. Lyrics have always been a big deal for me, of course music has to be equally good for me to actually keep it.that'd be what i'd say, so i steal your answer ok well maybe i could add a bit. for some reason, i just wasn't into music up until i was 16. i hadn't heard anything that i really liked and thought wow that's really good. it did confuse me a bit seeing as everyone else my age seemed to be into it but i was just like meh. i didn't have music in my life so i wasn't missing anything as far as i was concerned. then when i was in general studies class one day, the guy next to me had his cd player out and gave me one of the earphones. so i listened and was like this is actually quite good. i kept asking him if i could listen to it and he let me so i sat there listening to it and loving it. it was AI from what i can remember, but i remember basketcase was on there as well. and it all just started from there. i went to buy AI from HMV but they wouldn't sell it to me because they didn't think i was 16 so illegally downloading ftw.
Laura33 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 My aunt has given me Green Day cds since I was little. I've listend to them for as long as I can remember. I never cared much about the band and things like that, but when I got older I wanted to know more about the band members. So here I am.Ditto, and my aunt took me to see 'em live in 2002 when they first came to Newcastle. It was after that i started to look at them a little closer and I fell inlove with their lyrics and how they were so relavant and poetic in some cases.
*Minority* Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Well, the first time I listened to a Green Day song was when my brother's band did a cover of Basket Case. At that time I thought it was a song originally from his band! But honestly it didn't caught my attention (stupid me! ) Luckly, American Idiot (album) came out!!! I was 14 and I was watching TV and I saw American Idiot video and then it really got my attention!!! It's one the most important album for me and it really make me proud of stick with Green Day! And of course the lyrics are REALLY great!
Haydée Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 when AI came out i always use to watch the green day videos in MTV(ew.) I was like .. ten and the i search in the internet for new songs.. problem, i didn't understood a shit of what i was listening to so i searched for the lyrics, still i didn't understood so much, with the time, i learned english with some green day songs and started to understand what i was listening to, and i said: oh those are good songs..;i searched more and more information about them and i was like..: they're crazy .. anyway.. i began to love them and later i found an awesome community in the internet and here i am. yay..
Morgaine Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 The very first Green Day song I've heard was WMUWSE, I saw the video in MTV during the breakfast in that hotel in Rome. Haha, I remember it exactly, I thought 'Damn, that's pretty awesome!'. Then I came back to Poland and completly forgot about the song, until I heard it in the radio again. I decided to download it, and a few days after, I downloaded the whole album. Mind, that I haven't been listening to any rock bands before, I basically didn't care about music. I've listened to it for the first time and I was all like 'Wtf have I downloaded, I can't even listen to that shit'. Yeah, that was my first though But then, for some reason, I felt like listening to it again and it sounded better. So I became addicted, bought all of their albums etc, you know, all of the things you do when you're obsessed with a band. Now I'd say it's over. I mean, I still like them and I'm greateful for introducing me to a good music, but the truth is that now I rarely put their CDs on, comparing to other bands' albums.Well, that's basically it.
farley drexel hatcher Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I think it was definitely the lyrics, and if i'm honest, the drumming! I had never heard the drums like that before, and before Green Day I was into softer rock and getting sick of it, always looking for something more. AI came out, and I was drawn in by the lyrics to that one song, so I went out and got ISH and Warning. I loved how simple the music was without being weak, and how so many of the songs and lyrics, I could relate to.
Woopwoop Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I never listened to music that i though "Wow, I really like this, this is really good." before I listened to Green Day. I heard American Idiot, Holiday and BoBD, and decided that I should buy the album (which is the first "decent" album I bought) and I loved it, and it had a advertisement in it about Green Days older Cds, so i went onto some video website and watched old Green Day videos. I loved how raw and aggressive (i hadn't heard much rock music at this point) they were, and how, especially in Dookie songs, I think "Yeah, I know where they are coming from". Green Day are one band in 4 years of listening to rock music, that i still can listen to, although not as much as I used to, and still love. And i they introduced me into so much more, so even if one day i decide i hate them, they will always hold that place in my heart, as the band which got me into rock music.
BabsBurnoutGirl Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 well for me whan I first heard American Idiot I though "wow this sounds good..." so I looked into it and found out that I have acctually been listening to them since I was about 5 and then more I found out about then the more I realized that I liked them and that I could relate to them.same for me... I started to really get into them when American Idiot came out, and began to buy all their albums... and I realized that I had heard them before.the moment I became infatuated was when I heard their 1039 SOSH album. it was the songs I grew up with, but had never heard before.
Sgt. Pepper Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 My sister started liking them. And we both got into BOBD. Then we started searching for more Green Day music and I liked it.
Supermodel*Robot Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 i guess it was mostly their personalities that made them stick to me so much. I mean american idiot was a great album, but i was a bored eighth grader with access to youtube. You manage to see every interview they've ever done. I only recently realised that the reason I can still stand them is because even when they play faster stuff or whatever, like on insomniac, it's like the bass and the drums have this constant "chugging" going on. It all fits together, unlike new "punk" bands that just play random crap, with the cymbals going crazy and the bass all over the place and think that they're hardcore.
florenciawantsnovacaine Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 My Ex- best friend. She made me listen to them one day... And the fact that they are such such SUCH a good band.
Miqui_Dee Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 my mom and i used to make fun of Good Riddance in the car when we heard it on the radio, but then i had a friend down the street who was obsessed with green day when i was fourteen and American Idiot had just come out, and she made me listen to every single song by them and sort of like a karate master took me under her wing and taught me the ways of Green Day obsessiveness. hahaha.
Guest TwoDollarMellie Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 For me, I guess their music sounded really good, compared to everything else I used to listen to (Hilary Duff, Vanessa Hudgens, etc...). They were also one of the first bands that I listened to who's songs actually meant something to me. and aside from their music, there was just something about them that I liked... I think it was their goofiness.
sharpies123 Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 I just loved the way they sounded. And they were completely different from what I was listening to at the time.
No Fucking Pride Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Stage 1. I listened to all kinds of crappy music that I don't want to nameStage 2. I heard the song American IdiotStage 3. KA-BLAST!
saurus Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 I had never heard anything like it, I didn't know music like that existed, at first it intrigued me so I listened to it purely out of curiosity. I liked it, it was different, there were times I could relate to it. And most importantly, it was something I could call mine. At the time I was the person who didn't have anything, I wasn't fashionable, I didn't have many friends, I wasn't into what other people were into. So Green Day turned into part of me in a strange way. I think about it now and think how incredibly sad I was. But that music became part of me, it made me feel like a somebody, sometimes it felt like the only thing I had and I liked that feeling of having something that would only go away if I wanted it to. I've moved on now. I'm somewhat relieved, but those couple of years are ones I shall always remember.
Beathe. Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Ditto, and my aunt took me to see 'em live in 2002 when they first came to Newcastle. It was after that i started to look at them a little closer and I fell inlove with their lyrics and how they were so relavant and poetic in some cases. That's cool. My aunt took me to my first Green Day show when I was 4 or 5. I love your avatar by the way.
Joey Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 They were fun and fun stuff is better than stuff that isn't fun.
Hizz10n Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 You loved it? I feel bad for you man. Thanks, i was only 13, i was such a teenie! For me, I guess their music sounded really good, compared to everything else I used to listen to (Hilary Duff, Vanessa Hudgens, etc...). They were also one of the first bands that I listened to who's songs actually meant something to me. and aside from their music, there was just something about them that I liked... I think it was their goofiness.no offence, but compared to them, anything would sound good...
Anko Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Was it something specific happening in your life where their music gave you some comfort?Yeah actually, and I've said it here a bunch of times. I found comfert in their music, the first song I heard was when I didn'teven know it was them back in Ohio before I moved to FL and thatsong was "Time of your life". After getting into AI because I heard BOBDon Lenno I was shocked to find out they did that song.AI and all their music has really been of great comfert to me, whenever I get super upset about something I usually put on one of their records, now thoughI've been getting to the point of wanting to sing as loud as I feel like screamingso I've been listing to stuff I can do that with. But I still put on one of their records when I really need that escape that their music provides.
Kimpsu Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 hmm, I think I heard Basket Case somewhere, and loved it^^ When I got Dookie I loved Green Day even more
Agija Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 I really liked their music. It was ages ago though and I don't actually remember. Sad.
