Did Green Day sell out?

Green Day are indeed in the definition of "Punk Sellouts".

Lol. I wasn't the only one that checked then? I just hate the phrase 'sell out' it's just like what's the point of arguing about it, we all have different opinions on it - fighting about it isn't going to make the whole world decide 'yes' they're sell outs or 'no' they're not. It's an opinion, and everyone has a different definition and answer to it. I'm not going to just call them sell outs because an internet encyclopedia tells me that either... because 1) They aren't in my opinion and 2) I don't care what that site says, it's not going to make me change my mind that would just be stupid.

So...if they'd stayed with their original record label and did as well, that'd be ok. But since they changed labels people think that they only did it to earn more money quickly?

Actual question.

Who knows what people think? I'm not saying they did or didn't sell out, but some may argue for that reason that they did. Some may also say they went to a bigger label to progress and that they were never part of a strong anti-consumerist punk scene (such as Gilman) anyway.

THE DEFINITION OF SELLOUT

Selling out is a common slang phrase. Broadly speaking, it refers to the compromising of one's integrity in exchange for money or other personal gain. It is commonly associated with attempts to increase mass appeal or acceptability to mainstream society. A person who does this is labelled a sellout.

Many people see nothing wrong with tailoring a product to the tastes of its audience, or with taking practical and financial considerations into account when making art. And, in regard to theater shows, musicals, etc, a "sell out" show is simply a show so successful that all tickets are sold out, and is considered a big compliment. Selling out may be then gaining success at the cost of credibility. Though generally associated with the entertainment industry, regular individuals who similarly compromise their ideals (e.g. a Bohemian individual who suddenly switches to a socially conservative lifestyle) could also be considered sellouts.

Punk

The accusation of selling out is often made against punk bands who sign to major labels (e.g., Chumbawamba, Green Day, The Offspring), since punk has a cultural tradition of independence and doing it yourself. Similarly, it is often heard in the indie rock and metal communities, which like punk have a tradition of mainstream rejection and/or anticonsumerism. The most famous indie rock sellout band would probably be Soul Asylum, who discarded their punk roots to adopt a mainstream rock sound in the early 1990s. It should be noted that some of the first and most influential punk bands released records under major labels, such as the Sex Pistols (Virgin / Warner) and The Clash (CBS), although some Sex Pistols fans argue that Virgin was still an independent company when the group signed to it and that Warner was the "sister" company of Virgin (like Capitol and EMI with The Beatles). In the early 90's Green Day was signed with an independent punk record company called Lookout! Records, but in 1994 they signed with Reprise Records and released Dookie. The album drew scorn from the band's earliest fans. More recently, Green Day was accused of selling out with American Idiot, since songs like Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and Wake Me Up When September Ends are believed to be too pop-oriented, and receive airplay on top 40 radio stations, in spite of the fact that Green Day are not considered "punk" at all by most Punk rock fans. Some of these artists have defended these actions as a necessary evil in order to achieve widespread distribution of their records and messages, and argue that selling out only occurs when the artist compromises the music in order to appeal to the broadest mainstream audience.

doesnt get much more green day than that.

At least a thread like that has a conceivable resolution.

If you watch some of their older interviews, they've contradicted themselves so much its not funny.

No one was really bashing green day, just explaining their opinion on whether or not they think they have sold out. But [basically] everyone on here likes and listens to green day, its just some feel they have sold out, myself included.

 Okay....then I feel stupid now  . Seriously, I was just trying to defend them because frankly I'm getting sick of people who go on other people's messageboards and bash the band. Sorry for the confusion, though :P .

I have a question. If you consider Green Day sold out, when exactly would have that 'selling out' happened, in your opinion? Would it be when they signed to Reprise or because of American Idiot? I could understand if some of you thought that they sold out by signing to a major (they seem to have done it only to reach more people so I'll personnally give them benifit of the doubt...) but there's so much people saying they sold out because of AI and I don't understand that. And then, if they sold out because of AI, is it because of the album itself or because of what they've done since it came out?

I've seen people complaining about the album itself and, don't take it too personal but, to me it just seems like the reaction of someone who can't take criticism of their own culture. It's like there's a bunch of people out there who completely agree with them but when it comes to really stating it they just shit their pants, you know? It's like you want things to change but you only want people that nobody'll ever hear of talk about these things. Or maybe you just don't really want change...

Then again one thing I was surprised about the reaction people had concerning AI is how it's considered a 'political album'. Am I the only one who saw it more as a social statement than a political one? Somehow these things are closely related, but still... I kinda went off topic there but, yeah, that's how I'm like...

My point is always that they sold out, after the success of AI, not in making AI.

Selling out means to compromise your music/art for money - and seen as Green Day care so passionately for their music, when they could quite easily just turn out shit for cash means to me that they havn't done that at all. They work hard and they earn every penny they get. People just get narky cause they don't like people being rich or winning awards - which is ridiculous, cause I think if you work hard and produce something good, you deserve to be rewarded. Saying "Oh, Green Day shouldn't win so many awards" is ridiculous, because they made a good album and they deserve it.

Damn it! Stop posting here! AHHH! *Just ignore the argument...1...2...3...and a deep breath*

Nah, i just meant all the stupid critics who always go on about it and the people who don't know a thing about Green Day - I'm just venting, cause i'm fed up of having to defend them to everyone - i mean outside of GDA.

That's the big disadvantage about being mainstream.
