Green Day isn't punk. They're actually talented musically which most punk bands aren't. So basically in my opinion, Green Day is good but not punk.

Dude, I gotta disagree with you on that. Alot of the first generation of punks were pretty damn talented musicians. Especially the guitarists. It wasn't until the second wave (hardcore) that the kids started learning from the first wave of records and didn't know anything about what those people grew up with and were influenced by. And even then, hardcore had some good musicians (i.e. Joey Shithead of DOA)

:o

no sir, i didn't say that, i would never say that, he told you to "start sending hate mail to the legions on Green Day haters, I suggest you get started"

and i say "good luck with that" because is not easy o argue with them GOT IT??

Yeah, because they have their point of view and we have ours. They're entitled to think Green Day sucks, and we're entitled to think they're good. It's not like we're gonna change their minds.

so to answer shortly, yes. but they aren't exactly classic punk like the sex pistols or anything. punk has evolved. it's not exactly the same as it was. green day is very close to my definition of "modern day" punk.

I don't think being a good musician should determine your "punkness". Ron Asheton (the guitarist for The Stooges) is an incredible musician... Just because Sid Vicious couldn't plass bass worth shit, that doesn't make it standard.

Can this thread be closed?

I mean, Green Day have already claimed to have killed punk rock, and have basically admitted to not truly being punk rock.

The men themselves have answered this question.

I don't care. They make the music they like, and I happen to like the music they make too. As long as they continue to make music that they truly like and do what they've been doing for their entire career, I couldn't care less how they're labeled.

I don't really think they care much either. They experiment. They have fun. They do what they want.

They're a rock band. There we go. That term is broad enough to satisfy everyone.

Just because I'm not all "ZOMG GReEn DaY iz PUNkZORz!!1!", it doesn't mean I'm not a fan. As long as they make good music then why does it matter? It's only a label.

Agree. I said a few posts up that I didn't care what they were labeled either, and he agreed with me. You said it and got attacked.

Once again, this issue is stupid because it's not a matter of putting the most accurate genre label to Green Day. The people who take the "is punk" side believe the word "punk" is synonymous with "godlike".

You may like the word "punk" more than you like "emo", "metal", "pop", "mainstream", "indie", "rock"... but in the end "punk" is a neutral word that describes a style and it is not intrinsically positive or negative. So the side in favor of labeling Green Day as punk loses a lot of credibility due to giving both the band and the genre an extreme bias.

We've had this going on for almost two years and I think all the decent points have been made.

I'll end the argument and say yes, they are punk.
